Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

easy – a buttercup chair by bludot that i snagged for half-price (although i still couldn’t afford it at the time as a grad student) — it’s still my favorite piece in the house and i’m glad i was irresponsible enough to pounce on it!

Most of our furniture is from Ikea, but we do have a great ond oak dresser that came from an army barracks somewhere. It’s been refinished many times. I also scored a fabulous mirror at a garage sale for $5 a few weeks ago!

I salvaged an old schoolhouse table from a satellite office of a nonprofit I used to work for. I paid $30 for it, and then refinished it (after sanding out carvings of kids’ initials along the sides). It’s 9 feet long and fits our narrow dining room perfectly. We use it every day and get compliments on it all the time.

I went to an estate sale several years back with an ex-bf’s mom-we got to go in the day before it started (!!!). I scored an old, old dresser with the matching mirror for $20. I painted them both chocolate brown just to get them in our house, but now I’m contemplating it’s next, fun color.

We are under contract for our first home…our 5 year old daughter will finally have her own room. My best score is the 4 small writing desks I purchased for my leased office. Now, I don’t have the office but the desks are great for use all around our condo and will be for our future home too.

We have this very awesome dresser/wardrobe in our daughter’s room that we scored for nothing when my brother decided he needed something new. It’s solid wood, has a lot of drawers and a cabinet for storage, and it’s incredibly sturdy. Best piece of functional furniture in our home!

FURNISH ME! The best “piece” we have is our dining room table, which was a wedding gift from my in-laws. It is beautiful, solid wood, high enough for my husband’s long legs, and has been in storage for the last 6 years because we haven’t had a big enough dining room for it. But that’s about to change!

FURNISH ME! The greatest piece I currently own is also the saddest. It wasn’t even that expensive but I fell in love with a white ceramic elephant at Home Goods and he immediately went to a place of honor on the fireplace. Last week, I accidentally knocked him over and his belly busted open. :( I figure John can relate … We turned him around so his “good side” is facing the living room but I’m still grieving.
