Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

We have a beautiful old barn cupboard that was given to us by my grandma. It’s already served as our pantry and then as a decorative bookshelf.

We are renting an apartment, so we are waiting to purchase more expensive items until we buy a house. But the one thing I couldn’t wait for was a bedroom set. :)

    FURNISH ME!

We have a number of “great pieces” that were hand-me-downs from my inlaws, but the one I love the most is the secretary piece that we have in our dining room. It’s so versatile and we switch it up all the time- right now it holds our “fancy” stemware!

Two favorite pieces: a Lane MCM cedar chest found at a garage sale, covered in layers of paint. It’s now down to the lovely wood again, after hours of hand sanding… And a tufted-back leather loveseat found on Craigslist. One leg is wobbly and stubbornly refuses to be glued, but we love it anyway, as do all three dogs.

The best thing I’ve bought so far is probably my sectional couch – it’s huge and comfy and the perfect place to nap (I actually stretched full out on several different couches at the store to find the best one)!

Furnish me! I love our dining room buffet my husband found for half (retail) price – brand new! – by scouring craigslist. I also love the old pieces I inherited from my great-grandmother – two living room chairs (still covered in the original fabric), a spindle bed (which we just put in my 5-year-old son’s newly-decorated bedroom), and a dresser.

Furnish Me!! My FAVORITE piece is our crazy big leather sofa. When it came, I thought it was too big but this weekend we had 12 houseguests and a big chunk of them could all fit at the couch on the same time. It’s perfect for hostessing OR for stretching out when I’m home alone with my hubs and the dogs.

FURNISH ME! I hate that I don’t really have any great furniture to brag about. We mostly have cheapish furniture that we bought when times were still tight, or hand-me-downs from family. The only piece that is pretty nice is hubby’s grandmother’s antique couch that he had reupholstered about 15 years ago.

My favorite piece is my littlest one’s changing table. It was an old oak dresser, but I removed the hutch and painted it bright aqua. It makes me smile almost every time I see it (the exception being when a very dirty diaper is atop it!).

My son’s room is the only room with all matching furniture. Aside from that, it’s all hand-me-downs. My favorite piece, however, is my great grandparents’ bed in our spare bedroom. I never met them, but it’s a mighty fine piece of furniture.

Finding a $40 dresser on Craiglist — all wood, dovetail joints, perfect size and shape — was a moment of good luck. But spending a couple weeks with my grandpa fixing the minor flaws and refinishing the gorgeous top is a memory I’ll cherish and makes it a piece we’ll keep forever.
