Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

    FURNISH ME!

I’m just beginning to gather decent furniture for my place, so I have mostly big box stuff right now unfortunately. The pieces I love the best are my two night stands that started out as IKEA pieces but that I really customized to my exact needs and I think they’re beautiful now – both because of how well they turned out and all the work that went into them!

Furnish me! My best piece is a fantastic queen sized bed my dad made for me when I was single. It’s on loan to my sister right now, but as soon as my 3 year old gets an official big girl room it’ll be back in its rightful home. It’s beautifully made, but the fact that my dad did all the work just for me makes it more than just a bed. ;)

The greatest piece that we have was a family heirloom from my husband’s family. It is a president’s size desk that has character and southern charm. I am in love with it!

My favorite piece is a piece I actually don’t display currently. I purchased what I like to say is a ‘vintage’ dresser. The lines and details are amazing. I haven’t had the chance to dedicate time to it yet but every-once-in-a-while I think about it and daydream what it would look like in my house. Its probably a good thing I haven’t touched it too since the paint or not to paint debate keeps running through my mind.

    FURNISH ME!

My boyfriend and I just moved into a new apartment and our walls were looking a bit bare. Our neighbor was getting rid of an old dresser, and it had some fantasitc looking wood. He and I snatched it right up and made shelving for our bedroom. It’s a lighter oak wood and we paired it with wrought iron brackets to give it a classic, yet slightly French/Whimsical feel.

And we absolutely LOVE our new shelves that literally cost a couple bucks to make :) Maybe it’s because the shelves are so new… but they feel absolutely essential to us! They really tie the whole room together.

My fiance is tall (6 ft 3)- he would say the best piece in in the house is our dining room table that his legs can fit under :).

My favorite piece of furniture is a kitschy little chair I bought at a garage sale in a 70s yellow. I always meant to reupholster it, but now it fits into my house’s color scheme in all its old gold glory, and I love it. It keeps me from getting too pretentious with my decor choices. ;)

I have a Steinway grand piano that my mother gave me. I have considered selling it in the past to help pay off my student loans (and also because moving this sucker is expensive and difficult!), but I can’t part with it. I don’t care if it’s a splurge.

FURNISH ME! The greatest piece of furniture we have is my husband’s grandparents kitchen table and chairs. They purchased it when they were married in the 1940s. I love making new memories where so many have already been made. I can’t wait for my son to grow up knowing his Grandpa sat at the same table when he was a young boy too.

We have a super solid wood dining table that I have grown to love. It was my grandparents’, then passed down to my parents while I was growing up, and now my husband’s and mine. It’s funny how I never thought about whether I even liked it growing up–it was just a fixture. But now that I sit at it every day, it brings back a lot of memories, plus it’s giant and pretty and kind of awesome. :)
