You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Our best piece of furniture is definitely our couch – we ordered it last year from Ethan Allen. It was our first “real” furniture purchase since we got married, and it wasn’t as expensive as I expected it to be… but it wasn’t really cheap either. :) Other than that we are *sorely* lacking in the furniture department so I would love to win this!!

I don’t think I have a perfect piece yet – but I do love my Ikea couch. It’s comfortable and doesn’t have arms and converts to a twin size bed if we have company! It’s stood up to 9 years of use and is still as comfortable as it was when I bought it.

Years ago, we spotted an old dresser on the side of the road, and I made hubs pick it up. I painted it, and did a finish on the top using drywall mud and dry paint finish. It looks like granite! It is still my favorite piece.
