Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME!!! My favorite piece of furniture is the wooden media console that my dad custom made for my husband and I. It has a modern/mid century/asian inspired style with lots of storage and breathing room for all the media components. I’m incredibly blessed to have a woodworking craftsman Dad.

I’m really happy with the storage bed I recently purchased, as it enabled me to get rid of the unsightly dresser I had previously kept in my room. I’m currently hunting for an industrial bookcase for the kitchen.

We picked up a 7 ft armoire at a thrift store for $90 right after we got married. It’s enormous, but has worked so well in various contexts that we keep holding on to it.

    FURNISH ME!

My all-time favorite piece is a $2.50 chair I got from a Goodwill in Iowa. It is the sturdiest, most classic and comfy wooden desk-chair a girl could ask for. It just took a bright turquoise paint job and a DIY fabric seatcover upgrade to become one of my most treasured possessions. Thank you for hosting these giveaways!!

    Furnish Me!

It’s a tie between an antique dresser and nightstand set that my best friend’s mom gifted to me (I added some decoupaged decorative paper to the sides and drawer fronts, and am changing out the drawer pulls for mis-matched knobs for a really rustic/antiqued look) and a great antique teal jewelry chest that I scored from TJMaxx a few months ago. And all 3 pieces go GREAT together! Love it!

I think the best furniture I own is probably one of several pieces I inherited from my parents when they downsized their house recently. Greatest upgrade= fairly new leather couch (great replacement from the old one I had been given from my great-aunt post-college). Best sentimental value+ beauty= my great-grandmother’s desk that used to be in the small-town general store my great-grandparents owned when they immigrated from Norway. Most beautiful=the antique monk’s desk my parent’s bought at an auction and gave to my husband for his birthday after realizing they didn’t have room for it in the new place (and he had been asking for it for years!).

So far my favorite piece is our (reproduction of an antique) Japanese mizuya cabinet. These were used in Japanese kitchens and are about the size of a tall credenza or sideboard. It’s the priciest thing I own after the house and car.

    FURNISH ME!!

You actually included my favorite piece in a recent post. It’s not actually a piece of furniture, but two lamps. They are the mercury glass trophy shaped lamps from pottery barn. They completely transformed our living room, where we had some sad lamps I tried to diy, into sophisticated and updated. I’ve always wanted nice lamps, but until recently just couldn’t justify buying them. The only thing I regret is that I didn’t get them from the outlet! You found them for $30 cheaper per lamp than I paid. At least I got them on sale from PB for $20 off their original price!
