Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

Oh my gosh! Such an amazing giveaway! If I had a spare $3000 I would totally be shopping for those pieces! They’re all beautiful!

I love my sleigh bed, it was the first piece of furniture I bought when I moved into my house and the first bed frame I’d ever had! Yes, I slept with my mattress on the floor growing up…such a deprived child! ;)

    FURNISH ME!

A few Christmases ago my husband bought me a “chair and a half” leather recliner. We’d sat in it together in the store, and he said he bought it because that day he imagined snuggling our (soon to be born!) little one down between us to read or watch TV.

    FURNISH ME!

What a generous giveaway! My best piece is still sitting in the garage :( It’s a beautiful vintage settee that my grandmother bought when she was a missionary in Africa. The wood needs a little love and upholstery and nail head trim need replacing…but I have an empty wall in my entry just waiting for her to get all spruced up :)

My favorite piece has got to be a tie between an old desk of my mother’s that I refinished and now use for a vanity and an industrial yellow light I picked up for $20 that I am currently rewiring for my office.

I adore my china hutch. Its brand new so its not the history of the piece but how much I always loved looking at my mom’s (and her mom’s) hutch looking at all of the special things in there. That was the one piece I knew I had to have!!

Furnish Me!! My father in law scored a high end entertainment center for dirt cheap during an employee sale. The pieces are different woods, so with a little sanding, painting, and TLC, it’s now sleek black and amazing! It is a total focal point of our basement and I love it!

    FURNISH ME!

Right now my best piece is probably a (totally faux) frenchie chest of drawers from a little girl bedroom set my mom purchased for my room when I was little from a garage set. I repainted it white and sprayed the pulls ORB. It’s not fancy, but I’ve finally got it decorated just right and I love it. If not that, I inherited a solid wood occasional table set–two end tables and a coffee table–from my husband’s grandmother that I think we’ll have in our home for 20+ years. They are such a classic shape that look great in any color.

    FURNISH ME!

My favorite piece of furniture in my home is a small wooden sewing console that my maternal grandmother gave to me. It’s rickety, but holds such special meaning to me. I hope to give it a facelift as soon as I have the guts to do so – in the meantime, I’m trying to get the courage and the inspiration through YHL!

    FURNISH ME!

Our house itself is our ‘greatest piece’ when it comes to decor. It’s over a hundred years old and has the original wide wood moldings with tall, tall ceilings. And gorgeous, functioning pocket doors in the living and dining rooms. We’re fortunate also to have many hand-me-down antique pieces from our families.

The hubs and I bought a new bed from Room & Board earlier this year. It’s the Bennett Bed and we’re thrilled that it was made not too far, far away in Pennsylvania. It’s by far the most expensive piece of furniture we’ve purchased, but it’s made by artisan woodworkers and out of solid hardwoods so it’ll last a lifetime.

Because on a shoestring budget (and against the odds of a highly skeptical significant other), our house is the proud home of several well-loved, re-claimed refurnished pieces – including a side-of-the-road bureau and sidewalk lamp – but we have much work left to do. I would love to make amazing use of the great ideas in the book!

Favorite furniture is our set of A. Brandt Ranch Oak living room furniture. It came with the house my stepdaughter and her husband bought in suburban NJ. Since it looked totally out of place there, they were going to break it up and use it as firewood! But they gave it to us instead. Fits perfectly into our log cabin in the Maine woods.
