Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

    Furnish me!

I have two chairs from my mother-in-law that I love – and we had them reupholstered in fun blue stripes.

    FURNISH ME!

My pride possession is an old lobby accent chair I scored for free when I was in college a few years ago when an office was remodeling. It’s a bright yellow-gold color and has a great shape. I call it the “dooby chair”, because I found an old photo of a couple guys smoking from the 70’s probably stuffed behind the cushion.

I love our couch, love seat, chair/ottoman combo for our living room. The pieces in the set are a great neutral dark grey (couches) and cream (chair) that go with any decor by simply swapping decorative pillows.

Furnish me! My greatest piece is a wing-back chair & ottoman that I found on the side of the road. Found some gorgeous upholstery fabric that I haggled an amazing deal on & reupholstered it all with my mom… “custom” wing-back & ottoman for $120!

FURNISH ME! Oh, please furnish me! 98% of the things in our house are second-hand. And I love old things, but some shiny, fresh new things would be so awesome! I guess our greatest piece would be our dining room table. It was my husband’s grandmother’s and many happy occasions have been celebrated over it. It has claw-foot legs and 4 (count ’em FOUR!) leaves. It would stretch out into our living room if I ever used them all.

Our house is slowly becoming a mixture of old and new, but all pieces we’ve picked out ourselves, instead of just hand me downs. My favorite is an old wooden dresser that I refinished.

    FURNISH ME!

My Mom and I, during a trip to the Eastern Market flea market in Washington DC, discovered a gorgeous pale blue antique French vanity. Right now, it’s the only really beautiful and high-quality piece I own, but I’d guess that it’ll stay my favorite for years.

I love the dining table my hubby and I bought a few years ago. It was the first piece of real furniture we ever purchased. It’s hand crafted by an artisan out of reclaimed barn wood, totally custom, and utterly huge (that’s what she said!) at just over 9 feet long. I want generations of my family to make wonderful memories around this table for decades to come.

I think I’m all googly-eyed proud today because of the little jewelry box I refinished for my daughter. It was a Goodwill find on for 50% off, which made it about $2. A little love and pink spray paint and we now have a sweet little box for her to organize all her 4 year-old treasures to her hearts’ content.

My favorite pieces right now are the dressers and night stand that have been my furniture since I was a baby. I finally painted them, thanks to Rustoleum’s kit, and they look fantastic. Top that off with using oil-rubbed bronze spray paint on the hardware, and they are totally “new”!

My favorite piece(s) of furniture is a total toss up…between the coffee table/end tables my father made for our living room and are sturdy oak and amazeballs, and the purchased (World Market) incredible dining room set purchase during their dining sale for what felt like a total score (for all solid wood and only requiring a little bit of elbow grease).

Oh please, oh please, oh, PLEASE FURNISH ME! My husband and I just moved into our new (and forever, if I have anything to say about, which I do) home twelve days ago. We sold off almost all of our furniture when we moved from our apartment across the country, so now we have boxes upon boxes of belongings and no furniture to put them in/upon! So on that note, the greatest piece I currently own, my (beautiful, sustainably- and American-made) bedroom collection, hasn’t even been delivered yet!

FURNISH ME! After thinking about my greatest piece of furniture it kinda made me feel silly. My husband and I scored 4 adirondack chairs that were sitting outside a dumpster. Since they are so expensive we jumped right on them, and they have been a staple to our home ever since.
