Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

    FURNISH ME!

My favorite piece that we’ve bought is a coffee table with 12 drawers that can be opened on either side. I LOVE lots of tiny drawers, even though they’re not that practical. Would absolutely love to have an old card catalog set of drawers in our house!

Favorite piece we inherited is a framed mirror made by my husband’s Grandpa – and signed and dated on the back :)

I am in love with the chairs my hubby and I bought on our honeymoon in Charleston that are in our master bedroom sitting area. They bring back memories every time I look at them. Tufted arm chairs for $75 a piece…we couldn’t resist, honeymoon or not :)

“FURNISH ME!” I’ll take one of each! Love all those pieces. I once bought an amazing (but heavy and HUGE) antique Chinese bench from one of the shops on the mall in Charlottesville. The supports were elephant heads and it had a beautiful wood grain. Sadly though, I had to leave it behind when I moved since it was so big, but I still miss it.

My favorite piece is a large armoire entertainment center I found on craigslist years ago. It was our first piece of “real furniture”. Meaning that it didn’t come in a box that required assembly. And we got it for a steal!

FURNISH ME! My husband and I absolutely love our headboard, which is actually 2 twin headboards. I found them both at a yard sale for $40. The lady who was selling them has a booth at a swanky antique store in our town and she was having a yard sale to sell the things she didn’t have room for. It was a major score!

FURNISH ME! Recently, when my husband and I were visiting my grandparents, I spotted an old wing back armchair in their basement. I remember my grandmother sitting in it every night as a kid. It was still in perfect condition. “Grandma….whatcha doin’ with that chair?” 5 minutes later it was in our car and now it’s my favorite touch to our living room, updated with a pillow from West Elm. Awesome.

FURNISH ME! My greatest piece is a wooden oak mission style desk my boyfriend and I found on Craigslist in Starkville, Mississippi. We needed a desk and the price was right so we went with and and fell in love with how sturdy and heavy it was. We brought it home and analyzed it and found out that it was made in England by Cookes of Finsbury and when we pulled out one of the writing drawers underneath it was written in pencil “Date Commissioned July 23, 1941” and “Made a Grand Exit: August 1, 1942.” We are still trying to find out if ‘Made a Grand Exit’ means sent to the US? Anyway we love our great find and we even named him Winston Churchill. We hung a picture of my boyfriends Great Grandfather shaking hands with Prime Minister Churchill over it. It is a great conversation piece and we show everyone the writing under it!

The greatest piece is an art deco armless chair I scored at the Habitat Restore for $30. When I adopted her she was a strange gold color that looked like a dirty polar bear. Now she is recovered (by me!) in a fabulous floral. She really makes the room!

Ok, I know a lot of parents out there can probably relate… but it’s kind of sad that the best piece of furniture in our house is my daughter’s crib/dresser combo that we purchased before she was born. No particle board here! lol — So sad, isn’t it? I am on a mission to start adding some beautiful pieces to our home so we (as adults) can begin truly enjoying it! These pieces are stunning and would be perfect to help me get started!!
