You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

For two reasons – 1) I have a 20 x 14 foot room with nothing but a fireplace in it and an old oak sidechair – AND 2) my favorite piece of furniture, a Grandfather clock that belonged to our church’s Monsignor, who lived to be 98 years old, still active, still said Mass. I bought the clock at his estate sale – put in a blind bid, and made it a really odd number, like $634.26, and won! Its a great clock, chimes every fifteen minutes. Love it. But the rest of the room is empty.

Greatest piece we currently own? The new-to-us couch we bought from a friend who moved recently. It allowed us to finally (and affordably) replace our beloved futon (from my husband’s college days!).
Runner up would be the plain wooden dresser my parents found on the side of the road – since then it’s been painted and fitted with new handles and looks so cute.

My greatest piece is a MCM hutch from Finds and Designs in Huntington, WV. It is the most gorgeous piece of furniture I have ever seen. I initially thought “Oh, I don’t need that” and left. I called the next day and asked them to hold it and that my brother would come pick it up for me and paid over the phone. I am so lucky it was still there. I also have a gorgeous bookshelf from Target that is excellent quality and just stunning.
