Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME! The best pieces in our house were passed down to me from my grandmother. My favorite is a chest that used to be a wash basin stand of some sort (currently stores video games and movies!).

This giveaway would be perfect for me, as we are moving by the end of the year into a currently-not-so-nice-looking place.

FURNISH ME! I’m pretty new to the “living on my own” thing, so my furniture’s all cheap and new, but I did buy a beautiful gray dresser at Ikea – it was way out of my price range new, but they put it on last chance for some reason and I jumped! It looks awesome with my bedding and really tied the room together, plus it gave me some much needed storage :)

    FURNISH ME!

It’s really hard to find character pieces here in Hawaii (for affordable prices) – the same cheap rattan sets pop up over and over again on C-list.
BUT – every once in a while something amazing pops up – like the awesome 7 piece mid-century dining set I scored from a mainlander for only $200! I love it!

    FURNISH ME!

my favorite piece of furniture is our LA-Z-BOY sectional. it seats tons of people, it is insanely comfie and we bought it as a celebration of my husband finding a new job after a layoff (and before his severance pay from his old job ran out) In this economy that is certainly cause for celebration!

I’m in the midst or renovating my house and have an old recliner that my family has loved. Sadly my cousin sat in the chair with wet hair and it stained the leather. No idea how it did that. But we love that chair so much we don’t have the heart to get rid of it.

Most of our furniture is Ikea.. and black. We like the very clean and modern but with an industrial feel. So we splurged BIG TIME and got this:

FURNISH ME! I sadly no longer own any furniture. Not even kidding… I just moved across the country and I had to sell it all!

The one piece I had the longest and liked the most was probably the 1950’s style 3 drawer dresser that I had painted glossy black, with cream colored drawers and black pulls. I thought it worked well for a dining room, bedroom or entryway. I might have repainted it someday, but when I get a place now I’m starting all new!

I’m surprisingly proud of the way I’ve made Target and Walmart furniture work in our home.

My current favorite piece, though? I came across the vintage Metronoma Metronome that my grandpa gave to me. He was a choir director and bought the metronome in the 40s when he was in college. He gave it to me in the 80s when I started to take piano lessons.
