Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

The best peice I have is an unusual wood hutch from my grandmother. I remember it from when I was little. So not only does it provide us with great storage, it reminds me of her.

    FURNISH ME!

I found a distressed herb dresser at a sidewalk sale for 75% off the original price. I absolutely love it and had to have it even though it was not in our budget at the time. My husband was less than pleased, but he can’t complain anymore after hearing all of the compliments we have received on it.

My favorite pieces right now are the dressers in my bedroom. They are mid century pieces I found on Craigslist, and the first pieces of furniture I refinished on my own.

I am an avid thrift store hunter and I have scored a lot of really awesome pieces in the past. My favorite has to be this antique, hand carved side table that is in my bedroom. It is beyond beautiful and I only paid $10 at a garage sale. SCORE! I get compliments every time I give a tour of my home.

    Furnish Me!

We’ve just moved from overseas and know we’ll only be in our current house for 3 – 5 years, so are focusing more on house renovations than furniture since we don’t know what we’ll be moving into. However, I love, love, love a dark cherry bookcase we brought back from Japan. It’s in two pieces that fit together at a curved seam along the back; you can pull them apart as far as you want or angle them around corners and to make an interesting statement.

My husband and I splurged on our oversized living room loveseat a few years ago. It was hard to swallow forking over a four-digit amount for a loveseat (especially when most things we have are still second-hand), but today we still love it and get compliments all the time!

FURNISH ME! I found a great antique Asian-inspired nightstand for free right outside my condo on the sidewalk in San Francisco. I thought of painting it red, but after a lot of clean up and lining the drawers I decided I was in love with it’s worn dark finish and bronze hardware. It makes a perfect little launch pad in my entryway. Major find!

A year ago, my boyfriend’s uncle, Uncle Jim, offered us his parents dining room set. The table and sideboard date back to the late 1800’s and have been in his family since. This is the only piece of furniture that I don’t want to take a can of paint to and refinish! This is the table where birthdays were celebrated, and family meals were served and special occasions were had. We will always keep this furniture in the family! This dining set is even more special now, Uncle Jim passed away a week ago after a long battle with cancer. We will always have the table and side board to remember him by and to use to celebrate all the special occasions that we will create in our lives! We are lucky enough to have the history of the table written out and sealed in a zip lock bag inside the top drawer of the side board. It is a cherished piece, and will stay in our family for years to come!

My favorite piece is a vintage deep purple armchair I happened upon in an antique mall when I was in college. I had a new piece of foam cut for the seat cushion and it was as good as new! It’s been with me ever since, through many many moves.
