Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

Furnish Me!!!! Not exactly “in love” with any of our furniture. We have a very small home and often “settle” for things that fit. However, I do really like our bedroom set. It is a beautiful espresso color.
Stacey says
Furnish Me! My prize furniture is the birdseye maple bedroom set from my grandmother. My grown kids still come over and nap on the bed!

Unfortunately I don’t have too many great pieces. For the most part they are budget-friendly, functional items. But I do love to diy them with paint to give them a pop of unexpected color. My home would definitely be kicked up a piece from this line. thanks!

My favorite pieces that come to mind are bentwood armchairs–sturdy, great design, and remarkably comfortable. I got them for $12 each, I think, at a Habitat store. They had tons of them; I assume they came out of a business. I recently saw a set of 4 of them at a consignment shop sell for $200! Had I only known, I would have bought more.
Ria says
Furnishh Me! I love my newly refinished chair.
Jess says
Furnish Me! My favorite piece is a hutch that was my mother’s. Apparently, I had told her that it was my favorite when I was about 12 years old, which I had completely forgotten until she brought it as a housewarming gift to my new home last year. Now that it’s ours, I’ve refinished it and am grateful for the wisdom of my 12 year old self – it’s a beautiful piece that I’m so happy to have in my new home.

Furnish me! My favorite pieces of furniture are a piano that I inherited from my parents who got it from a great uncle, a vintage sofa I bought at a local junk shop, and my beautiful four poster bed that my husband bought me :)

My greatest piece I own is a $30 dresser/armoir that we got from IRCA in Phoenix. We built on and removed the doors and painted it a fabulous celery green. It is now our entertainment center! I love when people come over because they are always obsessed with it; and they can’t believe that we only spent about $100 overall on it!

Furnish me! After moving to san diego last year we were in need of a new coffee table but were low on cash. Strolling through an antique center, my husband had the genius idea of using a long bench made of reclaimed wood (from an old local coffee shop and only $120!) as our new coffee table – we love it’s history AND the fact that it goes so well with our vintage industrial decor while being a bit out of the box. We always get compliments on it, and love it so much we snatched up a matching one not too long ago as well. Now that we’ve just bought a new home we’re in the market for even more awesome furniture finds!

Well, It’s not our greatest piece just yet … But I picked up an antique rocker at a garage sale about a year ago. My husband will soon strip it (I would, but I am pregant. No stripper fumes for me!) and stain it, and I will then re-upholster it.
I foresee the rocker being a fabulous addition to our nursery. The Baby is due in 3 weeks. We better get crackin! ;)

My boyfriend and I just got our own place last week – this would be AMAZING!
I am most proud of a dresser I refinshed a year or so ago – it was a light maple color and I stripped it and painted it black – much more sleek! I definitely underestimated the amount of work it takes to refinsh furniture.
Anna says
Furnish me please!!! I have this awesome piece that I’m not quite sure how to classify but it has two large shelves and two drawers underneath so it’s been used as anything from a bar, to a bookshelf to a wardrobe. My mother has matching one at home I hope to whisk away some day!
Wendy says
FURNISH ME! Love our little desk chair with new fabric.

FURNISH ME!
My favorite piece is a bed I inherited from my grandmother’s house when she moved into a retirement home. It’s a spindle bed from the early 1900s and maded its way from a tiny house with no plumbing and electricity to mine (which may be small, but does have the modern conveniences). It’s kind of beat up, and is a funky size so you can’t really buy any sheets that really fit it, but for its history, I love it!
Jill says
Furnish me, PLEASE!
Becky says
Furnish Me! My favorite is between an antique (huge) chopping block table that belonged to my grandmother, or the canopy bead my other grandparents had made right when they were married. They were both passed down to me, and I love them!

Our 100 year old baby grand Steinway piano, which we bought for a great deal from the previous owners of our new home. The owners were very attached to it, but had no place for it. So, it got to stay in the same place where it’s been for the last 60 years. We just adore it, and we play it everyday!
Susana L. says
FURNISH ME! The best piece I have is a French style bed we got off of Craigslist for $100! The headboard is amazing and it makes me feel like I’m jumping into luxury every time :) We just gave it a nice coat of paint and called it a day!
Allison says
Furnish me! My grandmother’s sewing desk that she purchased back in 1946.

Michelle says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece is our fabric headboard and bed frame. It has studs along the edges and has fabric covering the whole frame. It makes the room and we watch TV in bed so it is practical too.

I’m a huge fan of my nightstand that I got from my parents when they upgraded to a nicer bedroom suite. I sanded it down, painted it “Mediterranean Blue” and added funky new hardware from Anthropologie.

until recently I owned a few items I really treasured, including several pieces I refinished myself. But not a cross country move meant I had to sell everything and start over. I could sure use some new furniture, and this stuff is gorgeous! my fingers are crossed!
