Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

    FURNISH ME!

I think my most prized piece in my house is my wall of lockers in our living room. I love having a vintage/industrial style and I think our 3 towers of old school lockers from a high school in the Midwest is a great way to achieve that!

It’s a toss up between the room & board solid-wood coffee table & L-shaped couch I was given by a friend moving to switzerland, and the conant ball dining set I inherited from my grandma–one that they used for years and years. All pieces have good, clean lines as well as high-quality construction, and a great story behind them.

The greatest piece of furniture I own is a family heirloom coffee table made from a thick, weathered, wooden hatch door from a WWI ship. My grandfather bought the door at an antique store in Savannah and forged aluminum bindings and legs to turn it into a coffee table. Every time someone comes to our house, they comment on that amazingly unique table! It looks especially chic paired with my watered silk armchairs and lucite nesting tables xxoo

Wow, I just had a ‘my house furniture sucks’ moment. I cannot think of a darn thing that I couldn’t possibly do without. Does a cool tufted chair from Marshall’s count? I got it for $75 and have yet to put it to use as a desk chair. I’m in the process of updating the office/playroom so maybe I’ll have get my hands on some new pieces that are fire rescue worthy. Thanks!

I am absolutely in love with a hutch I found on craigslist. It was an investment and not one of those great finds for cheap, but it was worth every penny. Almost everyone that comes into our house comments on it and even though I dread moving it one day, I plan for it to be with us for a long time.

My favorite pieces I have picked up for our house fit the bill of “Good Bones Great Pieces”. I found a set of Campaign style dressers and end tables on Craigslist for $150 and use them around my house in various ways. My mom found the ultimate Henredon buffet at a tag sale for $20, it serves as a TV stand and the massive size complements the large size of the TV my husband picked out….not to mention the kids love having all of the drawers for movies and games.

These are pieces that will be valued in my home for my entire life and hopefully passed down to my children.

Furnish me! The best furniture I have is a 1960’s blonde bedroom set that I scored for only $300! It includes a dresser, chest of drawers, and full sized bed. When I got them they were a little dinged up but using some mineral spirits to stip them and several coats of rub on polyurithane made them look like new. They currently live in our guest room but the dresser and chest of drawers will soon move into our new nursery!

When we first bought our house I splurged on a new bedroom set bought with our wedding money – it still is a beautiful set, however b/c it is upstairs, most people don’t get to enjoy it…this was my favorite piece until we bought a new dining room light – it is beautiful with crystals (which took about 4 hours to assemble) – but so worth it. everyone who comes into our house is able to see it!!
