Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

fave piece ever: an old jewelry store storage cabine! it’s four-doors and heavy as can be. It’s mostly painted mint green and every time I move I use it differently. Right now it’s my “dresser” and houses metal baskets for my clothes!
thanks

Furnish me! My favorite pieces of furniture are two little antique end tables that were my grandmothers. I struggled with a good place to put them for the past few years, but we are now using them as nightstands in our guest room and loving it!

Furnish me! After years of searching for the perfect tall mirror I found the Axel tall mirror by Timothy Oulton. It is made out of reclaimed vinatge boat wood and it is 8ft tall. I’m glad I waited as lon as I did and I got it for 25% off the original price. It’s currently my favorite piece in the house and it reminds me of patience everytime I walk by it.

FURNISH ME! I have a Rowe sofa that I got after we bought our house after reading about how much you loved yours. It’s so comfortable and is holding up great! Generally I find that the quality of new furniture just can’t compare to the furniture from our grandparents’ days. I wish I had kept more of their stuff.

I grabbed a mid-century modern table with built-in leaf and 4 tree-legged chairs for $30! Best money ever spent. (Except they are death traps for the kids.)

I love the pieces from my grandmother’s house. I always admired them as a kid (& adult) & when she passed my family gave them to me.

FURNISH ME!! My fav piece in my home is a beat up old desk we found at Salvation Army (for $7.99!). We patched her up and added some charcoal spray paint and now use it as a foyer console. It’s a piece that adds depth to our more contemporay style. PS I heart all the giveaway items!!!

Our greatest piece, and not because of its expense or design or beauty, it’s our wardrobe-turned-desk. We had been planning to do something like this for a while to hide the visual clutter of an open desk and all its stuff in our small NYC apartment, but most importantly to keep little wandering, curious hands at bay (those of a preschooler and a crawling baby). The husband did a great job at hacking it to fit our needs, and, plus, it was free! Found it on our hallway aften being discarded by a neighbor. Eventually we’d like something more aesthetically pleasing yet still similar to this concept, but for now it works.

The greatest piece I currently own would be the husband. ;-) I mean…err..the dresser that is in my bedroom. I just love her rich, dark brown color and her curves.

My favorite piece(s) would have to be two mid-century chairs I found on Craiglist for 30 bucks each. They were in great condition but the cushions needed to be replaced. I had new cushions made with some killer fabric from Tonic Living. They look so great now – they are way hipper than I am – and really make the den look fabulous.

Furnish me! Our best piece is an antique Drexel tall boy dresser that was left to me by my grandmother. It’s lived in my oldest and youngest daughter’s rooms.

FURNISH ME! I would love to win and use to decorate my 1970’s split level! Thanks so very much! One of my favorite pieces in our house is a buffet almost identical in style to your “new” old one. We got ours at the Salvation Army Thrift store. It is currently white, but I plan to paint it white again with Annie Sloane chalk paint and make the drawers and doors grey. Take Care.

FURNISH ME!
my favorite piece is the “dresser” that is now in my daughter’s room. In past lives, it was 2 sperate dressers hand built by one of my great great great grandfathers and then at some point one of my family members put the two dressers together and added more detail. It lived happily as a dining room buffet for 50+ years and then I inherited it and it was painted white and put in our son’s room and then moved to our daughter’s room in recent years. It is actually now in the plans to go back into the dining room as a buffet table.

I love my cedar chest. I always wanted one like my mom’s because it seemed like a box of treasures I couldn’t play with, and then I got one of my own–it was my grandma’s so it’s extra special.

I have a bed frame that was originally my granfather’s. It was passed down to my parents, then to me. It is such a classic design that it is still stylish even today – a beautiful medium wood tone, and simple lines. I intend to use it as long as I can!

My favorite piece that we have is actually an old hi-fi from my grandparents. My husband has rigged it up so that we can play music from our computer, and it sounds really, really good. It is the perfect “table” for our entry way.
Nissa Urena says
“FURNISH ME!” The greatest piece we’ve found so far is wood chair on clearance for $25.00. A description would never do it justice. Its kind of like a”club” chair shape, with swirly wicker sides and back. I’m always looking for quirky accent pieces now.
