Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

I love my vintage Eero Saarinen chair. Got a great deal on Ebay because it was in rough condition. I took an upholstery class to bring it back to its former beauty.
Paige says
Furnish me! It’s definitely our mattress. We figured we’d spend the most time on it (sleeping!) out of anything in the house, so why not go splurge?
Heather says
Furnish Me! My husband and I just refinished our dining room table and love it!

My favorite piece of furniture is one I got at a Yard Sale that had a big ol’ FREE sign on it. I snagged it, fixed it up (a huge ordeal), and now I LOVE it.

I love our sectional sofa. It may not be old or vintage but it’s comfy and we can all snuggle together.

My favorite piece is an antique dresser that I, uh, borrowed from my mom, and dressed up with some Anthro knobs. It has a beautiful carved wood mirror with a sunflower and a few little shelves.

We have an antique buffet that my parents had refinished and then realized they had no room in their house for it. It is beautiful, full of charm, and holds everything!

My mom’s old “dish cupboard”
Melissa says
Furnish me! My favorite piece is the antique dresser that my parents bought for me when I was probably 8 or 9? I’m definitely lean more toward the modern, clean lined furniture, but something about it just makes me smile:)
Marnie says
FURNISH ME!! I scored a few classic, lovely pieces at huge discounts from a french furniture store that went out of business…ornate chest, side table and etagere. I also love, love, love my honeycomb mirror from Pier1 that I hunted down after seeing it in one of your house crashes!

Omg! I don’t know what I would do if I won…
My best finds were 2 couches and a love seat in a dusty blue color with silver nailheads a’la Z-Gallerie and 3-piece side tables w/ metal x-base & glass top, all from Ashley furniture for less than $1400. Still in love 1.5 yrs later. (I actually saw the google ad on this site!)

What an awesome giveaway!!!
I would have to say that the greatest piece that I think we currently own is a little green velvet ottoman that my daughters use in their bedroom as a reading nook bench. It was meant to be an oversized foot rest, probably, but it is beautiful and works so well for their reading area. I am eager to buy a big one for the end of their bed when they get a bit older and we redo their bedroom (it is one of the “7 great pieces”, after all! Best part about this awesome green velvet ottoman, is that I got it via Craigslist for only $15! Woo to the who! As you two always say ;O)

FURNISH ME! I have a Asian Style Dining Room Cabinet that we scored at St Vinnies for 99 bucks. We found out later that it was worth probably 10 times that much. We love it.

The best find for me is a large metal antique trunk with a curved top and wood banding and rope handles on the sides. It is painted a cream color and has rusted with a lovely patina which adds to the charm. Because I live in a very small one bedroom apartment, it has provided much needed storage for me. I only paid $10.00 for it at a garage sale years ago. People always want to buy it from me but I would never consider parting with it. I have used it in the living room, dining room, and my bedroom. I don’t know what I would do without it.

I’d have to say I love how many mid century modern pieces my local thrift store gets. I have a slight obsession with mid-century and have scored a dining room buffet and 2 nightstands all for a total of under $100!

FURNISH ME
Our dining room table is my favorite piece of furniture. It is a large square (that was hard to find) and quite a splurge.
Megan says
Furnish ME! My favorite piece was inherited from my grandmother. It’s a pretty little secretary with the fold out front flap and glass doors. They used to keep these little paint bottles in it that would separate and you’d have to shake them back up to have the right paint color. Oh the things you remember…
Alyssa says
Furnish me! Our greatest pieces are the outdoor furniture set. So lovely to sit outside with friends and mingle.
Shelley Fosse says
FURNISH ME! Please, please, please.
I think my favorite piece of furniture is a Soho bookshelf I got 10 years ago at an outlet. I’d been drooling over it for ages at The Furniture Store and calling the outlet every week to see if they had it. I still love it.
Deborah says
FURNISH ME! It would be great to win this because we just bought a new home and some of the rooms are quite empty. The coolest piece we own is, hands down, a terra cotta warrior that we got from China. His name is Mr. Wu. And we dress him up for holidays.

Furnish me! My favorite piece in my house is the piano I grew up taking lessons on in my parents’ home. They gifted it to us a few years ago and everytime I walk into my living room, I fall in love all over again.

We have a queen-sized leather sleighbed in our master bedroom. It’s huge and it’s currently the most expensive piece we have in the house. Of course our dog and the movers have done everything in their power to scratch the side boards. From now on, we’re buying sale and Craigslist items! Still love our bed though.

I love my grandparents vintage end tables that were passed on to me after they passed away. Not only are they awesome and classy vintage, but they’re also special, sentimental pieces that add to our living room decor.
Alissa says

My current favorite piece of furniture is my cheap ikea desk that we “made” from a set of metal trestle legs and a large tabletop piece. It’s cheap, but I’m not afraid to ruin it that way. Plus, it looks good and is perfect for what I need right now – tons of space to spread books & supplies out for schoolwork!
Wom-mom Ethne says
FURNISH ME! I inherited a credenza desk from my grandma which was her dad’s, used in his in-home grocery store. Totally cool. I’m also stoked about having painted my dark and dreary bedroom furniture white. I referred to you guys for help. It’s not perfect, but such an improvement! I’ll let you know when I put it up on my blog!

Furnish me! Our greatest piece is a 1960’s tv/record player/stereo console that we painted a glossy white and turned into a office sideboard with space for a printer, hanging files and storage space.
Lauren says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece is an antique dry sink that my dad and I refinished. It belonged to my mom’s parents, it is one of the only things I have from them! I also love it because it holds most of my antique and consignment shop dishes…:)

My favorite splurge has been my recent purchase of a “ghost chair.” It is a little more modern and pricier that my usual taste but for some reason I get excited every time I walk in to a room and see it!

The greatest piece I currently own is a large brass ram’s head which used to be in my parents’ house. It sits regally on the sill of a small, high window in my living room, adding some antique charm to my otherwise new / contemporary home.
