Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

Greatest find was a painting for $5 of a mother with two children with red hair but was very Monet looking. Now that I am pregnant with my second and the first has red hair, this picture means the world to me. The yellows are outstanding on it.

FURNISH ME!!!
After my Grandparent’s sold their vacation home, we were given 6 pencil sketches of old Park City (UT) that used to hang in their home. They were done by the same artist back in the 1960’s, and while they don’t sound super exciting, I love them. They’re so unique and personnel, and a reminder of home for me (now that I’m in Texas).

Furnish Me! My fave piece is something I was always on the lookout for . . . a vintage box tv (Silverstone)on legs. Found at a warehouse sale for $40! Plans are to gut it and put a flatscreen in. The original stuff doesn’t work, we’ve already tried.

FURNISH ME! I have several pieces of furniture that I love, but my favorite is a hand-me-down dresser that was my mother-in-law’s when she was a baby, then my husband’s, and now is painted pink with white rose knobs and in our daughter’s nursery.

FURNISH ME! I’m currently in law school, so my furniture is mostly a hodge podge of inexpensive items that I’ve picked up, along with extra furniture given to me by generous family members and friends. I’d have to say my favorite piece of furniture is actually a papasan chair from World Market – my parents surprised me with it on my 16th birthday after I had been wanting one for many years. I’m also working on painting my kitchen table and chairs right now, so maybe when that project is complete it will be my new favorite piece of furniture because of all the work that I’ll have put into it! Thanks for this amazing giveaway!

Well it is not a “piece” as in piece of furniture. My mother in law gave us a hand me down gold mirror. Its a little bit traditional and a little bit funky, and it now lives above our mantel. I love it – and the best part is that it was FREE!
Jenna says
Furnish me! I think my favorite pieces are a number of gold frames that I’ve found at thrift shops.

My favorite piece would be my mother’s childhood dresser. It was also the dresser of all 3 of my sisters at one point. My daughter now has it. It was very plain, so a couple of years ago I painted a family tree on it. My daughter loves it. Hopefully, it will go to one of her children one day.

My antique Singer sewing machine that I found for $30 perhaps…

FURNISH ME… I think my favorite piece is not a piece of furniture, but a lamp that was my great grandmothers. It’s Czech (from early last century) that was originally an oil lamp that was upgraded to electric. It’s gorgeous and as much as my husband hates it, I will never get rid of it!

I’d have to say that my favorite piece is a large entertainment cabinet that I got from my parents. They paid a pretty penny for it about 15 years ago, after a little elbow grease and a fresh coat of paint, it has new life. I love it! And it only cost me a can of paint! Gotta love hand-me-downs!
Mary M. says
Furnish Me! It’s a toss up between my antique morris rocking chair & vintage industrial drafting table!

I actually have this book and love it. I just moved into my first post-college apartment and it has totally lead the direction for my “decorating”. My favorite piece I have right now is an antique 1930’s silk upholstered chair I got at an estate sale for $30.
