Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

Furnish Me!!
My favorite is my bedroom dresser that has lived in my brother’s college apt, my college apt, and various post college apts over the past (number not to be named) years in many different colors. It has great classic lines and is currently a dark teal with brushed silver hardware. I love that is has never been new to me, but has lived through many looks with new paint and hardware.

My best piece is probably the chair that I made following some Ana White plans. Most of our furniture is from our first house and doesn’t fit too well in our current place – I could use this prize!!

My favorite piece of furniture in our house is the bar in our basement. My father in law built the base, my father and I built the wooden top and my wife and I epoxied the top. It is the perfect place to kick back and enjoy a Michigan craft beer.

FURNISH ME! I don’t know if we ever have splurged on a piece of furniture. It’s usually a decision we have to make because its in the budget. Dream daily about a no budget decorating makeover. But I treasure my grandmothers china that I inherited.

FURNISH ME! We have a jelly cabinet purchased in a little shop in MA–at the time it was a big purchase–early on in our marriage when we were living mostly with hand me down furniture from various relatives.

I think the best piece we own is an old pine hutch that we inherited from my parents. It made it’s way over from England back in the 70’s and we love it!

FURNISH ME! I love an antique wardrobe that my dad is lendin me while I live in NY. I have no closet so it is perfect no matter the doors have to be held closed with a rope because the floor is so sloped it makes the wardrobe a parallelogram.

The greatest piece of furniture I own is a magenta vanity and bench I bought a DC’s Eastern Market for 50 bucks. When I bought it, I planned to paint it yellow, but the pink is too great a color to change. Instead of me painting the vanity to fit, I started designing around it. The best part of the vanity is that it’s almost exactly a smaller version of my grandmother’s vanity which my mom has had since I was a little girl.

I got a beautiful rustic mirror from the Flea Market in my town! it is made of reclaimed wood from a old barn and nothing has been done to the paint! so it is old, peeling and full of character!

I love this long, aged, blue dry-waterbasin that I hunted down for months. I’d probably visit it every other week hopeing the price would drop. It is large and perfect to hide all of our TV “stuff”. My husband who was not so interested in the piece now LOVES it as much as I do!

My best piece might be the first couch my wife and I bought together. It is so comfy that we might buy the same model for our rec room too (if they still make it).

My boyfriend of 6 years and roommate of less than one is handy and I have vision, so together we made our own custom ‘entertainment center’ when we could find one we both loved. We scored six old, wooden crates from a salvage store, assembled them with glue and a nail gun and added 6inch hairpin legs for a unique piece of furniture that was made together, with love. I smile every time I look at it :)
Lisa says
FURNISH ME pretty! I love those items. They would look great in my apartment. Even though we’ve been there a whole year this month, I still feel like we just moved in.
We just bought a credenza–midcentruy modern-esq after 11 months of our TV either being on a coffee table or a broken Ikea kitchen table. It has great bones but needs some TLC. we found it a second hand shop in NYC–Furnish Green! love them!

FURNISH ME! My favorite pc. of furniture is my gray sectional. It’s the perfect fit for the room and neutral so I can switch colors in and out to get a new look. And for a bonus it is a slip cover and with three kids under the age of 7…that’s a MUST! :)

FURNISH ME!
I have an awesome Hoosier cabinet from 1932. My mom found it at a yard sale in the 1970s and paid all of $10 for it. It was painted a hideous color, but she refinished it with a walnut stain. When my husband and I bought a condo a few years ago, my mom gave it to us. It’s enormous and provides tons of storage. Currently we use the pie safe area as a liquor cabinet/wine glass shelf and when we entertain, we use the counter as a bar. When I was growing up, we referred to it as “the brown monster.” I am so happy to have it in my house now.

Furnish me! I think my fav piece of furniture is our black bed frame we splurged on.

My husband and I just bought the most amazing dining table for our kitchen (although we still need to find the perfect chairs to match it) and a brown leather arm chair for our new house. I love them both!

The best piece I own is a coffee table my father made when he was in high school wood shop (1960s!!). It is by far the sturdiest piece of furniture I have ever owned and is greatly sentimental because it was made by my dad.

I have an antique desk I inherited from my grandparents.
Christine S. says
Furnish me! My favorite piece is a curved wooden headboard my husband helped me build for our king-sized bed (since we couldn’t find anything that we both liked that we could afford and that suited our space). It’s rustic and elegant at the same time, is the room’s focal point, and is quite dramtatic. Plus, every time I look at it I’m so proud of all the work that went into it. There’s nothing quite as empowering as looking at something you made yourself with your own hands (and the help of a circular saw, a jig saw, a palm sander, and some stain!) to make you feel like you can do anything you set your mind to.

FURNISH ME!A refinished entry table that’s managed to work in 3 homes now.

“Furnish Me”—my husband is a philosopher, so I love our spine bookshelves that prevent his books from taking over our small NYC living room…
Denny Finnerin says
FURNISH ME! My greatest piece is a 1952 maple buffet I scored on Craigslist for $200, already 95% stripped, so I just had to finish sanding, stain, and poly. It’s got copper hardware. PATINA’D COPPER. Can a buffet be sexy? cause mine is.

FURNISH ME!
The greatest piece I own is a dresser that belonged to my grandmother. It’s missing a hutch counterpart that it originally came with, and definitely needs a little bit of TLC, but it DEFINITELY has what I would consider to be “good bones”- a heavy frame, six sturdy solid wood drawers that open and close with ease, and a center cabinet with a shelf in perfect condition. That’s why I decided to keep it when my mom was going to toss it. Someday, when I have a home of my own, I have (two) grand plans to spruce up and re-purpose my Grandma’s old dresser- as either a buffet, or a changing table.

FURNISH ME! My favorite piece in my house is currently my bed. I splurged on a memory foam bed, its amazing!
