Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME!!! Wow, this has to be the greatest giveaway ever!
My favorite piece is a mid-century modern Lane dresser I stumbled across on Craigslist. After sanding and staining it’s beautiful. I use it as a buffet in my living room and it makes me smile every time I pass it.

    FURNISH ME!!!

We inherited an awesome solid dark wood dresser from my husband’s Great Uncle. It. Is. Awesome. It was free, and all the drawers slide in and out with ease (that’s the biggest annoyance with old vintage dressers in my opinion!) AND it doesn’t smell old! Woo Hoo!

The greatest piece I currently own is probably my antique dining room table. I got it off craigslit and refinished it by painting it. It is classic, but has double legs on each corner giving in a really unique, quirky, but not crazy look. Love it.

The greatest piece of furniture we own is an antique barrister bookcase that I got for $5! I still love that I paid $5 for it. Each shelf comes off the others, a little like legos. Each shelf also used to have a door on the front, but all are gone after years of abuse in a newsroom (which is part of the reason why I love it … I’m a journalist). Some of the hardware is still hiding in the top back part of each shelf. It’s filled with dishes and glassware.

I have an entry way bench that I just love! I found it at an antique store for $18 and it was already in the perfect color for my home so I didn’t have to do anything to it :) Also, I am in the middle of redoing an old dresser into a tv stand so hopefully if all goes well that can be my 2nd favorite!

My favorite piece of furniture would have to be the awesome handmade, unfinished chair that I bought at a yard sale for a couple of bucks. It needed a little love, but it turned out awesome. My husband likes to say that it belongs in a fancy steakhouse restaurant, whatever that means…I’m a vegetarian.

We don’t really have any “real” furniture right now (we just moved back from Brazil with 8 suitcases). But I just got a little dresser/bookcase combo from a garage sale that I think has some great potential for our daughter’s room. I’m thinking of putting teal chalkboard paint on it to make it stand out in her tiny bedroom!

FURNISH ME! The greatest piece of furniture I own…that’s a tough one bc I’m really picky when it comes to buying furniture and as a result I really love all of my furniture pieces. One of my favorites would probably be my bed, which I added a DIY upholstered headboard to. The bed frame itself was a cheapo IKEA one that i stained to look more expensive. The end result is a Pottery Barn bed look-alike for a fraction of the cost. Gotta love that!

The greatest piece I own is a tie for me. First one is my Grandmother’s old chifferobe that’s about 100 years old. My Dad completely refinished a number of years ago. My other great piece is a fabulous chair I got at a furniture consignment shop. It’s not perfect yet because the fabric on it is a horrible floral, but I’ve got new fabric and plans to reupholster the thing soon. Then it’ll be awesome!
