Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

I stumbled upon a fab dresser at Goodwill almost two years ago. It was white, but covered in dirt and other mess. After a good scrub down and some green paint it now serves as our TV console.

Actually – we just snagged a Remington Rand library table at our university surplus store – for $5 (well, $5.35 with tax) – it’s beautiful, solid wood. Just a little sand and paint love and it’ll be ready to play home to a busy sewing machine!

We moved into our home with mostly disposable furniture – So to me, anything made of solid wood is our best furniture! So far, that’s limited to our amazing bedframe, and a few choice craigslist pieces!

I love all my furniture, the hand-me-downs, the gifts, and the stuff that my husband and I bought together. But my favorite piece is probably our entertainment center. It’s big and tall and holds everything so nicely. I love the style too, it sets the tone for our house since it’s right in the center. And bonus, it holds the TV, definitely my favorite appliance in the house!

This is hard, but I would probably have to say a beautiful farmhouse table I scored on craigslist for $75. It’s really not that bad the way it is but I want to do something to it just haven’t figured out what yet.

The best piece of furniture that I currently own is a solid wood entertainment unit/buffet thing that was the first piece of furniture my dad bought when he graduated from college in the 70s. It’s a little outdated (see: tall, narrow, but deep slots for housing records), but it’s super functional, and holds a LOT of the things that I use for TV watching, along with storage for games!

    FURNISH ME!

Just last week, I found the exact piece I’ve been looking for (at the right price to boot): a vintage gossip bench. I love thinking about how, before the ease of cell phones, people would just sit there to talk on the phone. No multi-tasking, just sitting and catching up with an old friend. I nestled it next to the fireplace in our living room and it looks like it was always meant to be there. Now I’m on the hunt for an old phone to complete the look.

While not a piece of furniture, I tend to think the greatest things I have are based on what kind of a deal I got to get them. Currently, I was able to score a new Thermador refrigerator from ebay for more than 1/2 off! There’s no way I could ever afford a new one and we needed the extra height this one has. My veggies also stay fresher so much longer than before.

I would say my old childhood toy box. My dog has chewed it and it has a lot of dents and dings, but I remember hiding in it when I played hiding go seek and sitting on it when I was on the phone…So I will keep it until I can fix it and pass it on when I can to someone else who may love it too.
