Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

Pretty much all our furniture is from Ikea and all my clothes are from Target, so it would be nice to have a piece of furniture that made me feel like an adult!

The greatest piece we own is an antique, built-in corner china cabinet. My wife found it on Craigslist and we picked it up in Baltimore. It is the greatest piece we own because there’s a glass door and the dishes don’t get dusty, which means I don’t have to clean the dishes nearly as often as before. Less cleaning = more time for playing video games

My favorite piece of furniture is the dining room table my husband and I picked out. We spent some of the money from my mom’s inheritance and now when we sit at it we remember her and are thankful for the good times we can now spend with friends and family (we had a table that only at two before.)

My greatest piece so far would have to be our sectional sofa. We got this one at sofa select http://www.sofaselect.com/Klaussner-Loomis-Fabric-Sectional/K29000FABSECT-328/ItemInformation.aspx and it is perfect for our space. It completely changed the flow of our living room and eliminated pockets of wasted space.

FURNISH ME! My favorite piece is a steel industrial factory cart from a textile mill. It was given to my husband by the mill’s groundskeeper when my hubs had a shop at the mill. It has push handles in both sides, large wheels, and two shelves. It could probably hold several hundred pounds, but we use it to corral board games in our living room. It’s a real conversation piece!

My favorite piece is hard to choose, as a lot of our things are hand-me-downs or IKEA purchases. Our couch was a great deal and we really do love it, but my favorite pieces are probably a tie between the IKEA Malm mirror (it is HUGE and beautiful AND we got it on sale for $99) and our new dining room capiz chandelier from West Elm (which we also got on sale). I’ve been lusting over that chandelier for about 3 years now and my husband finally let me get it….I love him!

I have a china cabinet that I fell in love with at an antiques store in Fredericksburg right after my husband and I got married. It was so unusual and quirky and I visited it all the time. But it was out of our price range. One Saturday my sister and her husband were visiting and we were strolling through downtown. I showed her the cabinet and noticed it had a big “sold” tag on it. Tears literally sprung to my eyes…until I realized it was my name on the “sold” sign! It’s the one piece of furniture in my home I would never, ever part with. And I still love it.

    FURNISH ME!

When I was in High School I took a photography/dark room class. After a lot of trial and error I finally perfected developing a picture I took in a local garden. I have had it hanging in my home ever since. I love it because it reminds that beautiful things come from patience and determination.
