Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

My most valuable piece is the cedar chest my dad helped me make in collage. It isn’t the most expensive thing we own, but I would have the hardest time parting with it!
Funny how so many people have a soft spot for something they worked on themselves!

FURNISH ME!
My first “big kid” furniture purchase for my first house was a deep orange colored couch. It’s super comfy, very durable and it just seems to get better with age. Plus, orange is my favorite color, so that doesn’t hurt either!

FURNISH ME!! My greatest piece is an antique buffet my coworker was going to cut up and use for firewood. I rehabbed it and it is now the center of our family room as an entertainment center.
Ang says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece is our microsuede sectional… Nothing super interesting about it, just amazingly comfy and definitely the most-used piece of furniture in the house… Enough room for plenty of friends to hang out or for just us and the dogs to stretch out and relax.

Furnish me! I love my grandmother’s red pie safe that I became the new owner of…lots of wonderful memories AND function!

FURNISH ME, Please :)
My favorite piece is a beautiful dark oak vanity/dresser set that was once my great grandmother’s. I have it surrounded with new, brightly colored pieces and I love it!
Did I mention: FURNISH ME!?! :D
Erin Barry says
The greatest piece that I own is a beautiful, hand carved solid wood table from China that my grandparents brought back from their travels many many years ago. It was in their dining room for all the years that my grandmother was alive, and makes me think of the countless number of years sitting around family meals and holiday dinners with my Mom’s side, in Chicago. It now proudly sits in our dining room of our first home together as husband and wife. Great memories, beautiful piece!!

FURNISH ME!
Most of my home is furnished by IKEA (not NECESSARILY a bad thing) but I do have a GIANT midcentury dresser that was my grandmothers. It needs a refinishing realy badly (my cousin had it as a child and put those little glow in the dark star stickers ALL OVER one side!) but it’s so lovely.
If I won, these pieces would probably be the nicest things I owned!
:)
Alyssa says
FURNISH ME! Hmm, I guess I would say the table and chairs my parents gave me because it’s pretty much the only non-Ikea furniture I own. So I could really use that sofa!!!

FURNISH ME! I inherited an amazingly beautiful baby grand piano from my Nana. It is such a statement piece and full of memories!

FURNISH ME!
My greatest piece of furniture right now is my gorgeous white wooden crib in my daughter’s nursery. She’s due in September and I can’t wait to put her in it :)
Michelle says
FURNISH ME! The greatest piece of furniture that I currently own is an antique curved dresser that I bought off of Craigslist for $100. The finish was really beat up when I bought it, but I did some refinishing on the problem spots and my husband reinforced the drawers, so not it’s functional and in our bedroom filled with clothes.
Christine says
Furnish me! My favorite finds are my Thomasville faux bamboo dressers (3) and headboards (2) that I scored on Craigslist for a total of $50! I have an addiction to both faux bamboo and Craigslist. ;)

I have an antique server that was once used to house my grandfather’s tools in his work shop. He refished it years ago and passed it on to my parents who have since passed it along to me.

My favorite piece is our pine dining room table becuase my father-in-law made it and my husband did his homework there when he was a kid. One day we will refinish it, but it makes me happy to see our own kids doing their homework there!

My greatest piece is a bar cabinet that used to reside in a U.S. senator’s hideaway office. I could refinish it, but I kind of love the nicks and scratches that hint at its former owner.
Sarah says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece of furniture is the only new piece of furniture that my husband and I bought. It’s a farmhouse style dining table. We love it!

FURNISH ME!!!
Our house is all hand me downs, but my favorite is a VERY old table in our living room. It was probably meant for a wash basin or something at some point. The paint is chipping and its a little wobbly, but it looks awesome and it has got a past!
Paige says
FURNISH ME!
My favorite piece of furniture is our bed. My mom and dad built it for us and it will always be really special to me.
Amanda Beall says
Furnish Me!!!!
My favorite piece of furniture is a vintage looking Italian crib we got for our first daughter. It’s creamy white with worn edges and corners. Beautiful piece!
Jean says
FURNISH ME! I don’t have much for fancy furniture to speak of, but my first furniture purchase after college was a small sectional couch. As the first “Big Girl” purchase, it’s served me well for almost 3 years!
Katie says
Furnish me! I refinished a great antique buffet from a yard sale. I love it and would definitely call it my favorite piece of furniture that I own!
Cindy says
FURNISH ME!!!!
I found an out of date buffet many years ago through a newspaper ad and it’s been through a few paint schemes but remains one solid piece of furniture. It’s been with me since my boys were toddlers and that’s probably why it means the most to me.
LaTonya says
FURNISH ME! The greatest piece is our bedroom set. My husband and I splurged and bought really great quality furniture. Unfortunately, I could not get my husband to understand why I didn’t want to buy a whole matchy-matchy set. So the bed, dresser, and two end tables are all the same style and color. Don’t get me wrong, it’s really nice, but I would have preferred to buy a really great bed and search the craigslist or yard sales for older dressers and end tables that I could refurbish.
Casey Southers says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece I currently have is an old table from my husbands grandma. We found it in her barn thinking it was just a small table..but it turns out you open the lid and a very old sewing machine comes out.
Angella says
FURNISH ME!
My best piece of furniture is our kitchen table. It is the Kirkwood extending dining table from Pottery Barn. It is so solid and timeless. It has sentimental value since it was the first furniture purchase as home owners.
Bethany says
Furnish Me! My absolute favorite piece of furniture is a china cabinet/room divider from the 50s Broyhill Brasilia line. I got it from an antique dealer in Asheville, NC, with the last $500 I had in my bank account. It was totally worth it, and I aspired to collect the whole set someday.

I found an old dresser at a used furniture store. It didn’t look like much at first until I sanded it, painted it green, and replaced the knobs. I love it!
Wendi says
FURNISH ME! I call it “my first antique” — it is a pie safe that I found in the small, rural town I lived in. I love it! The punched tin on the side just makes it so quaint.

I’d have to say my favorite piece of furniture is a giant oak table my husband and I found at a thrift store and refinished. Its such a strong and beautiful piece that I know will last a lifetime.

My husband and I just moved into a colonial house and have two rooms furnished, so this would really help :) I have to say my favorite thing right now is a long oak bench that my grandfather found 30 years ago and brought back to life.
