Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

I would say the greatest piece I currently own is an old mid-century mod dresser from my Nana. It was in her bedroom for as long as I can remember, but we use it in our dining room as a sideboard. It totally fits with my style AND reminds me of my Nana. Win-win!

I have a beat up old dining room table, but with the leafs in, I can seat 18 people easily! It was my great, great grand parents and I doubt I’d be able to easily find a replacement that would make me as happy!

FURNISH ME! My mid-century dining set with matching glass front cabinet and sideboard. LOVE it and you will be happy to know it was a deal! I had something in mind for years, but could not find something in my price range until one lucky day. :)

FURNISH ME!! I found this old vintage looking mirror at a garage sale and spray painted it bright sunny yellow. I love this piece as it was bought for a steal and looks great in my hallway :)
Jennifer says
FURNISH ME!! Definitely my husband’s grandmother’s mid-century modern sectional! The only thing I would let him bring to our new house besides his cat and his grandma’s vintage tinsel tree!

My essential piece of furniture is a Stickley bookshelf that my husband and I received as a wedding present. I’m not super obsessive about dusting, but that’s the one piece in the house that gets extra special attention!
Kate says
FURNISH ME! I have an 8 over-sized drawer card catalog that I think will become the changing table when we arrange the room for baby #1. Cost a little more than I’m used to paying for vintage/antique pieces, but I definitely love it.

Furnish me! My fav is a mirror that I made (with help) from scratch. The frame is awesome and just seems to glow!

I’m probably the most excited about our “grown up” bedroom set. My husband and I moved into our first house 2 months ago and are excited to have graduated to non-particle board furniture. We have a lot of space now and don’t know what to do with it. I think this book would be helpful :)

Furnish Me!!! The greatest piece currently in the house has to be my wedding present from my husband – a handmade full-size Pac-Man arcade game! It’s amazing!

Furnish me! :) My favorite pieces of furniture are a bedroom set that we inherited when my son & I moved home last year while my husbad was deployed. We rented a little cottage, and since all of our furniture was in storage in HI, there was no reason to buy new just for a year. Gotta love working with what you have! :) We painted the bedroom set a soft white and stained the tops of the dresser, desk and the entire bed a dark walnut. I was actually inspired by Clara’s two-tone dresser :) I had so much fun decorating our “Deployment Cottage” on a dime, it kept me busy and helped pass the time that my husband was gone quickly. Our landlord let us keep all the furniture since we had put so much time into it, and it moved out along with all of us last month into our very own first (ranch) home! :)

My favorite piece of furniture was an auction find that I scored for $12.50! It was an old wooden letter file cabinet that was used at a printing shop. It had 4 layers of paint and had seen better days. I stripped off all of the paint, stained it an antique walnut and repainted the hardware. It now sits in my dining room and I LOVE it!

Furnish me! My grandmother’s china hutch is my fave in our house.

My best piece is the 4×4 cube bookshelf that I scored on Craigslist for 65 bucks! It redeemed the layout of my tiny studio by creating a bed nook and doubled as much needed storage for all my books.
Melissa says
Furnish me! I love all of the pieces I’ve inherited over the years. Not all my style and all pretty old but one day I’ll get around to refinishing, reupholstering, etc.

FURNISH ME!
My favorite thing is the cheapo dining room set I bought at a consignment store. It’s an oval table with six Louis XVI style chairs with open backs. I’ve always admired this style of chair and it was a steal. I am recovering the chairs in this awesome ikat pattern and am so excited for the results.

The rocking chair we broke down and bought 10 months after our first sons birth is one of the “greatest” things we own right now :)
Em says
Furnish Me! Everything in my house came from craigslist (the cheap dumpster-dive variety, not the “stumble on something fantastic” variety) or my parent’s basement. The closest thing to awesome is a solid cherry dresser that I’ve had in my room since I was a little kid.

My current great piece is a tall Amish cabinet, stained blue, that has been everything from a pantry to toy storage to a linen closet to media storage. Wonderful piece.

My best piece of furniture is our sectionl couch – it is huge and super comfortable and people sleep on it all the time, and we found it at an unclaimed freight store so it was decently priced.

Amy Boyd says
Furnish ME! My grandmother was a yard sale Queen. Among the many items she found was an antique bedrooms set, full of feminine touches – perfect for a little girl. Now that I’m grown, I’ve passed the set on to my little girl. She loves it as much as I do.

FURNISH ME My favorite piece of furniture is a side table that my Dad built when he was in his 20s. It’s traveled with me from place to place over the years, is a little dinged up, but I love it still.
Trish says
Furnish Me! And I love all of my collected pieces from family and friends, but mostly a yellow formica table that we use as a computer desk. It has the best vintage feel, color, and I love that it’s probably ALWAYS been in my house – the prior owners left it behind in the laundry room.
