Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

An old drop leaf table my mother bought from a crack head when she was in college in Atlanta. When I graduated from college and moved to Atlanta, my grandfather stripped and re-stained it for me. The chairs are re-covered with burlap sacks from my family’s pecan business. It makes me happy every time I see it.

Currently, it’s my dining set. After more than a year of looking for the right one, we FINALLY scored one on Craigslist for a good price recently. It cleaned up well, and the difference it has made in our dining room (after replacing the too small, wrong color placeholder table) is fantastic!

I am totally in LOVE with a cocktail table from Crate and Barrell that I found on craigslist for $65!!! It was my first time purchasing anything on craigslist and to be honest, I was a little sceptic. Anywho, I got over myself! I had been searching cocktail tables for my great-room for months and after checking out your blog, I decided “why not give it a try”? Long-story short, I picked up the table and I am so in love with it. It really brings character to the room and completes it. Great bones for sure!

The best piece I have is actually a craigslist find scored by the other half as a gift. It’s a Danish MCM piece that holds the 1960’s typewriter he also gifted that year. It’s a dreamy little thing (as is the furniture above — swoon, what a way to finally shore up some living space in our current abode. I’m so close to snagging a dresser for our sorely ample storage woahs!)

My favorite is a Room & Board sectional that we picked up for over 50% off at their local outlet. It is so stylish but it’s really the quality that makes it our favorite since it takes a m.a.j.o.r. beating an still looks fabulous.

I’m a broke college student, so I can’t really afford any furniture that I’ve been eyeing. Although I do have one thing in my house that stands out: an electronic cat picture. The frame is a tacky gold color, and the backdrop is purple; in the middle is a big cat with 4 smaller cats in each corner; when I plug it in, a hypnotic swirl glows behind the big cat. I found it at Goodwill for $10!

The greatest piece we own is a bench inherited from my in-laws. It was the first piece of furniture they purchased together when they were married 52 years ago and it’s so beautifully distressed. 100% naturally. I can’t not mention the cradle we also have — my husband slept in it as a newborn as have our 3 children. So sweet!

I need all of the help I can get! Now that we’re expecting our 2nd child, I think it’s time to replace our cheap hand-me-down college furniture with something more stylish! The only thing that I like in my home right now is an old mirror that I found at a flea market.
