Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

Furnish Me!! I love our ultra-modern dining room table which beckoned me from the store window, was on sale, cheaper than any other option we had, and was exactly what I’d been hoping for. 5+ years later, it’s still awesome.

    Furnish me!!

My greatest piece is a dining room table and chairs that belonged to the previous owner of our house. The set is traditional dark wood with matching cloth colored chairs. It fit so nicely in the space that we asked the seller if we could keep them and thankfully they said yes!

We were given lots of hand me downs when we got married, so we have slowly replaced them. Currently my favorite piece is our entertainment center from Ikea. It has tons of storage and it’s fun to decorate!

FURNISH ME! I took some art classes in college, including a glass blowing class that I wasn’t particularly good at. I set out my uneven, blob-like glass with my mom’s old crystal. The contrast in both style and quality is playful and makes me smile.

My mother bought an antique baby changing table when I was small, and saved it up through now. I used it for years as a vanity/sewing+craft storage unit, and now we’re refinishing it to use for our own child. :)

I am still in love with an amazing yard sale find from three years ago–a great old armchair with fantastically detailed dark-wood legs. I bought it for $15, and when I went to recover it, learned it was real mahogany! It is CRAZY what people end up underselling at yard sales.

FURNISH ME! I have a 5ft. long oak church pew that I love! I can pull it up to the dining table when we have a lot of people over, but usually it sits against the wall in our dining area. Right now, it’s the “sofa” in our front living room until we can get a new one :)

I don’t actually have anything too awesome in my house, but I recently got my grandmother’s old rocking chair and am in the process of stripping it and got some awesome fabric from U-Fab to cover it with. If only I had a covered outside space to work it, maybe it would not be quite so slow going…

Furnish me! My most interesting piece is a framed set of collector’s cards showcasing the “Useful Birds of North America”. My grandmother acquired them when she was a little girl from Arm & Hammer and Cow Brand Baking Soda. There are facts about each bird on the backs of the cards and I mounted them in a double pane glass frame so their backsides wouldn’t be hidden. (And our best piece of furniture is a Green & Green style coffee table that my fiancé built!)

FURNISH ME! The greatest piece I currently own is a cedar chest that was my grandmother’s. My grandfather gave it to her as an engagement gift in the early 1930’s. It sits up on legs, so it can be used as a sofa table, buffet, etc.

My favorite piece is an old 1920s Edison (fully functional!) that my parents found at a yard sale (along with a ton of Edison records) right after they got married. It’s a gorgeous piece of furniture, and I have so many memories as a kid of dancing in the living room to the swingin’ jazz records :)

But gosh I would love to get my hands on that beautiful mirror!!
