Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

I love this antique desk and hutch I found at a garage sale. it has a compartment in the middle of the desk where the typewriter used to go. I love it so much and I paid $25 for it! When I came back to pick it up there was an antique dealer there willing to pay me $100 for it! I was like, “thanks, but no thanks!”

    FURNISH ME!

I’m a newlywed and first-homeowner all since New Years Eve! It’s been a whirlwind of adventure and I’m constantly trying to blend the interesting, unique pieces with all the other stuff I’ve just purchased on a newlywed budget. I think this book is exactly what I NEED! When my husband and I got married, his mom gave us his great uncle’s chest from the early 1900s that he used for travel. It’s such a strong piece in our living room of almost all newly purchased furniture. I absolutely adore it! Fave for sure.

    FURNISH ME!

My favorite piece has to be a headboard my parents “bought” from a friend that works at a furniture company. The company was having a sale and he told us it was around $100. It is deep gray, super soft velvet, and curls at the top. The friend of ours ended up not charging us for it and it is by far my most favorite and prized piece, followed closely by my tempurpedic queen-size mattress!

Furnish Me! Favorite piece, a free (huge) display shelf from a bookstore going out of business, (free!). I shlepped it home in my mini-van-and tried to carry it to the second floor of my house-but could not get it around the second floor landings solid ballister!I wanted it in my daughter’s room before my husband ccame home from work, (I was always dragging “projects” home for him to help me with)He helped me lift it over the landing and up into the room. I painted tiny bouquets of flowers all over it, it was perfect for books and my baby girl’s Madame Alexander Doll Collection. I ended up selling itwhen we moved for a lot!

FURNISH ME! My favorite piece is a gun cabinet that was given to me by my father. It was made for him by a family friend who is now deceased. Besides the glass panes on the front and the knobs and locks, it is entirely handmade. My dad and the friend who made it even cut down the tree he used to make it. It’s 25 years old now and I still smile every time I see it.

FURNISH ME!!! My favorite piece that I own is a vintage sewing machine table that I inherited from my late grandmother. It’s one of those that looks like a tall spindly legged side table but when you open the top, there’s a beautiful 1950’s green Singer that pulls out. Even though it’s in working condition, I don’t sew on it much (my new machine is much more functional!) but it makes for a nice entry table (in my previous home) or record player table (currently). Plus, it’s fun remembering my Momo using it to make clothes for all the grandkids when I was young!

We just bought a vintage hutch that a local artist painted an ocean scene on. We love seaside/beachy decor and this piece is absolutely beautiful. We only paid $199 which I think is a steal since it was antique, in great condition, and completely unique.

FURNISH ME! We inherited a sideboard from my Nana & Grumps’s dining room when they downsized to a condo. When I learned I was expecting our daughter, we decided to stay on budget by using old or thrifted furniture painted white to match the schmancy crib we loved. The sideboard started out as the perfect changing table – waist-high, long enough for a pad and housing small cutlery drawers to organize all the little diapers and creams. Now we use it as a dresser with bins for toys underneath.

I have a cheap, cute blue “bedside table” that I bought in college that has since been used as a side table in the living room, a desk, a place for flowers and my pretty things in a sunroom, and an accent piece. It has traveled with me through 4 different apartments. It really ended up being a wonderful purchase.
