Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME!!!
My favorite piece in my house is an old trunk that someone along the way painted red (before I bought it). I found it in high school for 70 bucks and still love it to this day. My husband calls it the treasure trunk :P Certainly is a treasure to me!

FURNISH ME!
I have a coffee table that my grandfather put together. The wood is mahogany and was tossed in a dumpster where my grandfather worked. He collected enough “blemished” parts to make the coffee table. The top was ripped and glued together and with a couple of passes with the router the legs matched each other. It means so much to me that he made it from free wood that he saved from the dump.

I love my office chair that my MIL found for me at a thrift store. The hubbs does not like it, well, because he says the fabric on it is poop green. To each their own. I guess that’s why it ended up in MY office as opposed to OUR bedroom……..

FURNISH ME! My favorite piece right now is the sectional I found on Craigslist – it was dirt cheap, immaculate, and fits my place perfectly. The best part? The sellers lived 2 blocks away from me so I didn’t even have to rent a truck!

We have a buffet that we got for $40 (the person could not believe somone was paying that much for it). It was super solid and heavy, painted with a black oil and got some kicking knobs from Anthropologie (they cost more than the piece).
It is in our dinning room now and eveyone that sees it loves it.

Pretty much everything we have is a hand me down.

My favorite piece is an end table garage sale find that I bought for $10. It was REAL wood (unlike nearly everything else in my house that was previously purchased at Walmart) but looked horrible. I refinished it and it’s now in my living room. I am very proud of it!

The greatest piece I currently own is probably my 6 piece bedroom set. It’s French Provincial and was hand-me-down when I was a child. My dad painted it white with gold when I was little, and I repainted it black with crackled gold when I got older. It will probably be replaced with a more modern bedroom set soon, but I will break up the pieces and use them around the house.

My current favorite piece is actually a deep seat wicker set on our side porch. While its not old or nostalgic, the porch is the most relaxing place to unwind and read,or hang with friends and and a glass of wine.

FURNISH ME!!!
A couple of months ago I found a long vintage dresser sitting on the side of the road… for free. My husband and I stopped and looked at it and realized it’s potential despite it being in rough shape.
It’s still in the works, but it’s going to be a buffet for our dining room in the next couple of weeks :)
Devon says

FURNISH ME!
My greatest piece is the dry sink I inherited from my Grandmother. I remember it fondly, sitting in her dining room. It was always the place that a bouquet of flowers ended up on. The best part, when my husband & I were moving, the movers referred to it as a “baby changer” and the name has since stuck! But it will always hold a special place in my heart :)
Diane says
FURNISH ME! I scored a tall-skinny wooden dresser for our baby’s clothes for $40 on craigslist. It would have cost me over $300 in a store. Now I’m wondering if I should leave the wood finish or paint it white…

FURNISH ME!
My wife and I drove two and a half hours to look at a bookcase at an antique dealer. When we arrived at store (which was an old barn with chickens roaming around) we found the a buffet in the exact style that we had been looking for for quite a while. We came home without a bookcase, but with a great craftsman buffet.
