Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

My favorite piece is a maple armoire that my husband painstakingly built. We designed it from the ground up and he worked on it for nine months as he learned woodworking: we have always referred to is as his “pregnancy.” It is handsome, well-made, and will never go out of style!

Furnish me!! We’re about to buy our first home (closing next week, fingers crossed!), so as you can imagine the furniture we have is minimal and on its way out. BUT my husband (a librarian) bought me a small card catalog from a local library auction for Christmas and it has a lot of potential. It’s not grand, but it’s definitely my favorite.

Furnish Me! My favorite piece is an antique dresser my husband and I bought when we were first married. It was our first “grown up” furniture purchase together.

My favorite piece in my house is my husbands grandmothers dining room table and chairs that we had painted a sunflower yellow! I LOVE it now! And what makes it coolest is that my husband has memories sitting at it!

FURNISH ME! The best piece of furniture we currently own is a sectional that started out in West Elm–made of two Tillary units–but I scored on Ebay for a little over $100. It’s a movie couch, it’s a guest bedroom, it’s a lounge spot…. I just love him and refer to him as Gray. So masculine, so soft and comfy–yet strong–that he’s quickly moved to the top of my list of favorites.

Furnish me!! We’re closing on a new, bigger house in two weeks. I DO NOT have enough furniture for this place. Bonus question: I love my granite topped bistro table. I bought it long before granite became an expectation, and it reminds me of cafe au lait in Paris.

My favorite piece is a bench that I scored for $75 at a festival. It is made from a solid wood antique bed. It is scrolled at the top and the bench is deep and comfy.

my best and favorite piece is this sweet little antique french country farm table, with the legs mysteriously cut down to coffee table height, which ends up working beautifully in my home! and the best part… found it while poking around in my in-law’s basement, so in other words, it was free!

FURNISH ME! I love the cabinet that my grandpa made me when I was little – over the years it has been in every room of our house and has served as everything from a display case to wine glass storage. A great piece made with a lot of love that has endless uses!

FURNISH ME! (Please!)
We’ve been steadily collecting pieces that make my heart smile throughout our marriage, but unfortunately, many of those pieces that even insurance money couldn’t replace, were ruined in a flood.
It’s hard to choose between the dining suite that Daddy bought to replace his parents rickety table back in the 40’s, and my great-grandmother’s pickling cabinet. I guess I’ll chose the cabinet, only because it now serves as my Master Bath linen cabinet and I kind of laugh when I think how my great-grandmother would react to my re-purposing her piece!

We currently own a table for 6 that my husband’s great great grandfather built in 1891. It has square nails, standard board slats, and black stove top as the finish. I love it! Also, we do not have the original chairs so we have two matching brown head chairs and 4 matching black side chairs. I love having family heirlooms.
Sam says
Furnish me! Oddly enough, my favorite piece of furniture in our house is the upholstered rocking chair that we had in our son’s room and now in our daughter’s room. It’s attractive enough, but it’s the memories spent in it that make it my fav!

The best piece of furniture I’ve ever bought is our dining room table. I found it at an antique store before we moved into our house. It was a barn wood style big table with removable legs. I snatched it up before anyone else could see this beauty for such a cheap price! This is a table that can withstand crayons, water rings, anything! I know we will have it the rest of our lives and I love to think about the life it had before it was ours.
Elise says
FURNISH ME! After not having a headboard for 7 years, I sprang for a custom upholstered bed last year and it makes me smile every time I see it … still!

FURNISH ME! My greatest piece is this old desk-which we use as a table for our tv- it is printed shabbily in bright lacquered red. Everyone who comes over comments on it and I always tell them it is from a thrift shop, then repainted quickly and messily by my brother and handed down to me. I love it the way it is!

Furnish Me! (pleeeese)
My husband and I were newlyweds and both worked for a youth ministry. We staffed the youth house together (i.e. lived in the youth house), so our home had a coke machine, pool table, a GIANT fiberglass fish, and the most thrown together mix of Goodwill finds. One day while wandering an antique fair I spotted a wonderful corner china cabinet in the greatest shade of blue. I called my husband and told him I found a piece for our dining room. He replied, “We don’t have a dining room.” But I hoped that one day we would. 11 years later, it is still my favorite piece ever.
Ellie says
Furnish me!! My aged antique dining room table is my favorite and most complimented piece. Just this weekend a friend said they were looking to spend $1000 on a similar table and couldn’t believe I found ours for less than $300 at an antique store. I love a bargain!

I know it’s not an original, but I’m obsessed with those IKEA cube bookshelves. I’ve had mine forevvvver. It has clean lines and is super simple. Now I’m on the hunt for a nice Parsons desk to complement it.
