Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

Furnish ME! .. Honestly, the piece of furniture I’m most proud of is our dining room table that I built (& stained) from scratch with my mom & dad. I’m not very proud of really any other furniture we own, though, so I’m hoping for a miracle here. :)

We just moved and all of our rooms have lovely new paint, but not much else!

FURNISH ME! My favorite piece that I own is definitely a painting that I picked up when I was 15. It’s got white bengal tigers and is absolutely to die for. It’s huge and was already framed and matted. Picked it up for free because they were moving and wouldn’t have the space. WIN!

I have an old 70’s couch that I nabbed from my parents 7 years ago. It is almost 9 ft long and was once striped yellow and orange… then blue corduroy! Last year I convinced my husband to let me reupholster it again instead of buying a new sofa. I doubt I’ll ever get rid of it!

FURNISH ME! The greatest piece of furniture I own is an armchair that belonged to my grandmother. It desperately needs to be reupholstered (maybe a future DIY?) but I love it because it reminds me of her.

Pretty, pretty please!
My favorite piece in my home is the very first piece my husband and I bought together in our first home: our coffee table! It is from Cost Plus World Market and has a very rustic feel. We had a coffee table before many other essentials (dining table, lighting, or even a couch!) but love it because it reminds us our home is made up of us, our love, and the things that reflect us. Thank you for this amazing giveaway!

FURNISH ME!
My prized possesion is my grandmother’s sideboard/buffet. When I moved away from home 8 years ago, I didn’t have money to buy a dresser, so I used a part of her dining set. After 3 moves, its served various functions. I’m finally moving back home soon and I hope to reunite the buffet with the rest of the set. I won’t be able to have them in my new place, but one day when I have a “real house”, I will have the dopest vintage dining room.

FURNISH ME! The greatest pieces I own would definltely be the ones in this post….

Furnish me!!!!!!!
When I was in college, my opa built a bed (entirely by hand) for me. We designed it together and I still have the drafts he drew up. Opa died this past February…two days after my birthday. That bed reminds me of his hands and how he was so willing to use them to help others (which he did frequently, having sold his home so he could spend a decade travelling around the u.s in a motor home while volunteering for habitat for humanity) .

I have a table that sits 2 but the sides open up to sit 8-10. It’s perfect for so many uses, including rolling cookie dough with one side lifted or hosting Thanksgiving. It’s from Ikea and not particuarly fancy but I know its a keeper thanks to the diversity of use.

I have to say my favorite piece is a table I inherited from my grandmother. It’s decorative, the size of a desk, and has intricate carving. Very Old World, just like she was—in a good way.

The greatest piece I currently own is just a hand-me-down IKEA table we’re using as a too-small dining room table, but it was the first piece I ever re-did myself (just painted the top – BUT my first venture into DIY!).

I love the chair that I reupholstered. The original chair was my mom’s (one she was going to throw away/ give away) and I loved the fact that I could give it a little facelift and make it work for my living room. :)
Thanks!

We have this old school desk/chair that we love. We found it roadside when moving ages ago–amazing the potential you can find in things when you’re in a moving truck not a compact car!
Ashlee says
FURNISH ME!! We are mostly an IKEA family because that is what we can afford. When we got married we did get a tall 6 drawer dresser from friends that we redid. It sure was a labor of love with 3 layers of paint on top of the wood. We scraped and sanded and then scraped and sanded done more. Refilled holes and replaced hardware. It will be 4 years this November and it’s still in our room!!

One piece I love is the chest of drawers my mother gave to me as a child. She bought it as an unfinished piece and added the stain she liked to it. After all these years, I have refinished it to match my home and my son’s room.
