Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME! I love furniture that can be used in a multitude of ways and have many favourite pieces that have changed back and forth from a main attraction to a “supporting role.” For example, an oval drop leaf table that during my college years, was great as a dining room table. Later it became a breakfast table and then, many years later, a side table in the family room with one leaf down. I love versatile furniture and as I look around I realise all of my pieces like this are antiques or vintage.

I am lucky enough to have inherited some “nice” furniture from family, but my most prized piece is the Land of Nod rocking chair where I rocked my 2 boys to sleep, nursed them, & tried to nap in those first sleepless months postpartum. I’m on slipcover #2 already!

FURNISH ME!
I refinished an old chest that my grandmother gave my dad. She gave him two and both were in bad shape, after he donated one to goodwill I claimed the second before he gave that one away too. Turned out it was a hope chest that my great grandfather gave my great grandmother on their wedding day. Cedar lined and everything. It is finally back to its original beauty!

There are 2 pieces of furniture in our home (my husband and I) that I hold near and dear to my heart. 1st- a leather, custom-made chair my husband and I splurged on during our first year of marriage. We had just moved to CA from NC and it was one of the first items we bought. 2nd- I love, love, love our Ethan Allen four-poster bed. It is a classic piece that we will keep for years to come.

Furnish Me!!! Most of our stuff is hand me downs (but not of the keeping forever kind) or temporary stuff. But after years and years of wanting a real honest to goodness couch that we picked out, we got one! It’s leather and I don’t want to get rid of it for a long, long time!

FURNISH ME!
I have so many hand-me-down and thrifted pieces I don’t know if they really qualify as “greatest piece”, however the coffee table my grandma gave me has a special place in my heart. Just knowing how many years my Mom and Aunts and Uncles and then all us grandchildren have had sitting around it and the stories it holds makes it a treasure to me.

FURNISH ME!!!
I found a neat old dresser on Freecycle… it needs a little TLC, but it has great bones and sweet carved details. We had to carry it down a narrow, dimly lit staircase from the top floor of a 3-decker on a 90-degree day, but you can’t beat the price!
Cherie says
Furnish Me. I had (2) vintage side chairs shipped from Boston to Los Angeles and had them reupholstered.

Furnish Me!
I would have to say my fav piece of furniture would have to be my mosaic coffee table that I did all on my own. I bought sheets of coloured glass, special tools, and a killer coffee table frame (with glass insert), and went to town with it! It turned out great and is super colourful and fun. :)
Lindsay Reese says
FURNISH ME! We bought our circa 1950, black Baldwin piano from the “Bargain Basement” at Classic Pianos, an upscale store in Portland, Oregon (I’m talking half million dollar pianos here!). When we were shopping, we asked if there was a Bargain Basement Bargain annex. We compromised on the price by skipping on the refinishing. I think the signs of wear add to its charm.
Brittany says
“FURNISH ME” antique yellow chair from a thrift store for $5. I thought I would re do it, but got it home and redecorated a whole entire room around the chair!!

I actually have already purchased this book, and it is great! I am planning on getting my cousin her own copy for her birthday.
My prized possession is desk that my parents have owned since I was a baby. My aunt is an interior designer, and was designed a custom kitchen with a built in mahogany desk. The client decided to forgo the desk to have more cabinet space. My parents added legs to the beautiful piece of wood and the giant desk was born. I inherited the desk when I went away for school. In college I used it as a dining table and a desk. Now that I am in grad school it is the perfect place to spread out all my books and study, or set up as a bar/buffet when having friends over.
