Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME, pretty please!! I think our latest great deal was getting a Crate & Barrel apt-sized sleek modern grey couch (as seen in one of your house crashes) from our apt complex’s model apartment (ie. barely used) for a $150 charity donation (they were updating the whole place). I was stoked! Now if the new kitten can just avoid clawing it :).

My favorite piece is stunning dresser my mother bought me several years ago. It is very heavy and poses a challenge every time we move but I see it always having a place in our home.

Holy holy holy cow! If I ever win one giveaway in my life, I sure hope it’s this one!
My current greatest piece is our dining room table. It was the first big purchase my husband and I made after college and I will never forget how excited and ‘grown up’ we felt when we bought it- definitely an upgrade from the card table we had before that, haha. It has a few dings and scratches now but it’s survived three interstate moves, two Thanksgiving dinners, a few red wine spills and lots of poker nights. Funny how furniture almost becomes a member of the family.

I have a solid cherry coffee table my father made at least fifty years ago. I played underneath it when I was little. It is classy and strong (you can sit on it without fear of breaking it). It is so nice to have a beautiful piece made by someone you love.

I spent an insane amount of time hunting for the perfect corner media cabinet (layout of of my room requires it). In general corner media cabinets are chromey and glass and 80’s ( the bad kind of 80’s) or very country. iAd my hard sent on something vintage and scoured Craigslist and vintage stores and failed miserably. When I was about to give up ( after 2 years of looking everywhere) and buy something I didn’t like I found it on Overstock a mid century style, zebrawood beauty. Not vintage but a good fake…and reasonably priced. On top of that it’s my first wood piece that isn’t used or made at least partially from particle board. I smile everytime I walk by it ( except for the time I stubbed my toe on it)

“FURNISH ME!” the piece of furniture I cherish most is this little old cabinet that a friend gave to me before I got married. We both worked at this little vintage furniture and accessories shop and I had been coveting it for a long time!

My favorite piece is a Mexican painting done on tile and framed in rustic wood that my mother bought when we were little and living in Mexico for a short period of time. It reminds me of a fun, but difficult time in our lives and as it hung in her house for years also reminds me of her.

I think I’d have to say our couch is the greatest piece. It was a labor of love to find one we both found comfortable, and it has this great high back and arms that make the corners perfect for snuggling into. The cats approve of it too!

My favorite furniture item in our house is a galvanized steel hutch. It has the same form as a wooden hutch – with deep bottom shelves and two high narrow shelves – but it’s this cool galvanized steel with a great aged patina. It looks like it was hand-made for a potting shed but looks wonderful in our dining room. It was $30 at Goodwill!
I love design books that focus on classic pieces with eclectic touches – whether it be found objects or a funky bold color. This looks to be a great book!

My husband’s dad restored a beautiful old children’s desk from the 1930’s (we think) that he was going to bring to the dump, until I begged him to take it back inside. We now use it as our entryway piece, but I can totally see it being a desk for our kids when we have them. So proud if it!

What I consider my greatest piece is my recliner. It’s upholstered with brown corduroy and it rocks back and forth and will get completely horizontal when I pull the lever and lean back. My girlfriend thinks it’s ugly and I had to fight her to keep it, but it’s comfortable it fits our small space.
