Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME! I “inherited” a marble coffee table from the boyfriend’s first marriage (his ex-wife’s new husband did not want some of the things). Yes, the table weights a ton and requires three people, at least, to move it, but it wipes down great (no water rings EVAR) and is sturdy like a rock.

I love my dining room table and chairs, given to me by my grandparents when they downsized. Every time I see it, I am reminded of them and all of the quality family time we have spent around that table!

The best piece I own is a really narrow table for my really narrow front hallway. I was so lucky to find something that was over 8 feet long and only 10 inches at its widest point!

I love my leather love seat that I bought off of craigslist. It’s originally from Ikea, but we couldn’t afford it new. It’s survived 7 years of kids without a scratch.

    Furnish Me!

My husband and I were lucky enough to stumble upon a goldmine of mid-century furniture. A neighbor of the kids I used to tutor was selling his parents’ house and it was chock full of mid-century beauties. We adopted a Paul McCobb dining set, a Plycraft-esque orange lounge chair, a slatted coffee table, a gorgeous credenza and a set of triangular nesting tables – all for $200!! THEN, we helped the man sell the rest of his parents’ furniture on Craigslist and he gave us our money back! 4 years later, we still can’t believe our good fortune!

My favorite piece of furniture is a orcker given to me from my grandmother and originally owned by my namesake, my Great-grandmother Emma. I’m trying to re-upholster it myself, but if I totally botch it, I’ll spend the bones to make it look awesome. Here’s to hoping I can restore this beaut to glory! Um, is it bad if I tell you my 2nd fav is the bed from JC Penney that we bought? It has an upholstered headboard, and I just love it. Not quite as sentimental, but still awesome.

My biggest score was once upon a time- my sofa. Beautiful, modern, classic and sleek white leather- then I got married and we adopted a dog. Not looking as classic these days as much as tragic :(

We have this beautiful wooden hutch in our dining room that we recently inherited from my husband’s grandmother after his granddaddy passed away. The piece is beautiful and was built by my husband’s great-grandfather! It will stay with us until we pass it down one day (only issue is moving it since it feels like a ton of bricks)!
