***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***
Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

We inherited some beautiful hand-me-down furniture from my granparents-in-law when we got married. I love the family history of the kitchen set they gave us. It has a few stray crayon marks from the grandkids, and has the perfectly-imperfect, well-loved finish of a great kitchen table. It is has perfect bones, and if we ever get tired of its current finish, it will sand down beautifully for a refinishing job!

My favorite piece in my home is a credenza that I bought refurbished at my local Fancy Farm Girl’s Sale. It is pale green with a deep chestnut stained top. Beautiful old hardware. The best part is that it’s all scuffed up so it works perfect for high traffic areas. (especially with my four kiddos). It cost a few hundred dollars but was still hundreds less than comparable pieces at furniture stores. Plus it comes with so much charm! This piece has really set to tone of my home decorating. LOVE IT!!!
Meredith says
Furnish Me! My favorite piece in our home is an old dresser that was my husband’s when he was little. I can’t wait to see it in our (future) children’s room.

Athena says
Furnish me!!
I want to say that our two different light lime green chairs are my favorite pieces–they’re meant to be in the same room to subtly coordinate, but our space limitations wouldn’t allow it, so they ended up in different rooms. In the end, I really like the effect of a little bit of green in the two different spaces, especially since I usually end up overly obsessed with red!
cici says
love an antique secretary my husband’s grandfather used as a personal closet. Refinished and in our kitchen, its shelves house my cookbooks & favorite pottery, and the drawers hold items like play-doh & fingerpaints–for the original owner’s great-great-grands.

The greatest piece I own is the bed-side stand I was given. It is solid wood and has plenty of storage, and best of all, character! Once I re-stain it and get it new handles, it will be perfect!
Dana says
FURNISH ME! I just moved from Ohio to New Jersey, and for the big move I inherited a mid-century armchair from my grandmother that I have admired since I was a little girl. Before I was born she had it reupholstered in white fabric, so I have vivid memories of always wanting to sit on the “pretty” chair in Grandma’s living room, but not being allowed to put my shoes on it or to eat while sitting in the chair. Although it’s slightly worn now, I still feel weird eating while sitting on it.
connie says
Furnish me. I love the dining table that was passed down from my husbands great grandparents to us. We stripped it and refinished it but its still charming and functional and fits perfectly in out dining room.
Jessica says
FURNISH ME!
I love that my daughter is sleeping on the bed I had when I was little (from my great-grandmother’s house!). I haven’t yet mustered the courage to paint it, and the finish is in poor shape, but I still love it.
Penny says
FURNISH ME! I love my dining and kitchen tables most, because my husband John made them both.
Kristi Ross says
FURNISH ME! PLEASE! My favorite piece of furniture in our house is an antique 1920’s majestic highboy, walnut radio cabinet. It’s far from perfect condition, but my hubby bought it before we were married. It’s the first thing we see when we walk in the door!
