Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

The greatest piece we own is actually the greatest pieceS. We got this awesome 1950s bedroom set (dresser, mirror, tall chest, and nightstands) via Craigslist nearly 2 years ago, and for a really great price! They’re very solidly constructed wood, and we love them!

I love love love this old parson’s desk I inherited when I was the ripe age of 3. At the time, all I wanted to inherit was a TV to play episodes of the Magic School Bus, but this definitely worked out better for me.

FURNISH ME!
I have a small table that I use in our entryway. My parents bought it at an auction in PA before I was born, and my father gave it to me a few years ago. I think it’s oak and possibly from around 1900 (but I know thismuch about furniture), it’s a little rickety, the top is warped and my nieces got some glitter on it, but it’s still elegant and looks really cool alongside more modern pieces. I love this table.

My greatest piece is a vintage (1938ish) Lane cedar chest that my grandmother got when she was a teenager and passed down to me. It’s still in fantastic condition and holds a lot of memories for me!

Our bed and dresser is the first furniture my hubby bought before we got married. Him and my father-in-law stained it to a nice cherry finish and it was in our apartment on our wedding night. 7 years and 2 kids later, it’s still my favorite piece of furniture.

I picked up a Broyhill Brasilia credenza for a song a few years ago when I was out east for a cousin’s wedding (I live in the Midwest). Thankfully my parents drove and they were able to fit it in their car for the trip home with only about an inch to spare!

Christina says
Furnish Me!!
I got an awesome dresser that was not-so-awesome when it was covered in beige/yellowish paint and Spice Girls stickers. (Honestly, it was scarier than Scary Spice.) A few of the drawers had a fabulous curved front and I knew I could make it something special. A bit of sanding, priming, a few coats of paint, & some new knobs later, you never would’ve guessed that I paid just $6.99 for it.
Thanks for the giveaway y’all!

My favorite piece of furniture is this chest we picked up at a flea market here in Nashville. It’s old, the paint is chippy, but it has a ton of charm.

Furnish me! My favorite piece I own is a MCM dresser (two actually) that I bought a few years ago; I enjoy the style and they’re so nice and sturdy – good old solid wood. Favorite piece I don’t technically own, but use as my desk for everything? My boyfriend’s OLD drafting table; as a previous design student this is like crack to me. Form and function…love, love, love it!

The “greatest piece” that I currently own is my desk. My parents bought it for me when I was little and painted it white. I just completed its first overhaul into a wonderful red-orange color with bronze pulls. I love it and realized that I can do it myself.

My husband and I had our eye on a beautiful antique wardrobe for over a year that was for sale at a local store. One day we made a low ball offer just to try our luck and we scored. Over $1400 less than the original price and I couldn’t be happier.
Courtney says
FURNISH ME! Hmmm…this is hard for me, actually. I really like the old hand-me-down dresser I painted red that lives in my guest room. I’ll go with that.
