Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

I’d say my best piece is one I picked up just recently. It’s a lovely, old (solid!) wood dining table. It’s the perfect little size for my humble, little home. Best part? I paid just $20 for it! I plan to sand it and re-stain it to bring it back to its original glory. Right now, it looks great with some wooden chairs I picked up at a flea market for $5 a pop.

FURNISH ME! I have an antique chaise that I inherited from my grandmother. Slim and low profile with two arms. I remember playing in her room as a kid and thinking this chair was the perfect reading spot. It is. We’ve had it recovered to modern it up, and I love it even more.

One of my favorite pieces in our house is a metal office chair with a wooden seat that we thrifted for $3. When we got home we saw the stickers on the bottom and realized it’s a legit science lab chair from the University of Tennessee. :) It’s pretty amazing.

My wife and I found a 100-year-old faded red bench with the most fantastic trim work a couple years ago at a yard sale our church was having. I convinced my wife we couldn’t afford it, then slipped the guys $75 (a total bargain!) for it. I was able to deliver it to my wife three weeks later as an anniversary gift and she was completely surprised! It works great as a coffee table for us now and our daughter loves to hide things in the drawers.
Terese says
FURNISH ME! 2 C&B chairs that were given to us by a family friend. Xo

FURNISH ME! I found this great old buffet at Goodwill for my house. It was missing a drawer pull, but it was just too good to pass up. I’m going to use it as my dresser in my room. I wanted something a little taller than average so it’s perfect.

We love an antique chest of super well-made drawers that has been in my husbands family for many generations – and is now ours!

“FURNISH ME!” with that delicious settee! I LOVE those pieces and they’d find a perfect home in my new house!
The greatest piece I own would have to be hands down, no doubt about it, my 4 ft x 6ft painstakingly hand carved mango wood mirror from India. It has travelled to several homes across continents and survived with me. Knock mango wood a thousand times, it will continue to survive what ever adventures may yet come.

Furnish me!
Our guest bedroom is currently furnished with my late great-uncle’s bedroom set. It’s old. Maybe antique… but not the good kind. I’ve had it since college and it has moved with me to six apartments in the past four years… it’s finally ready to rest in a house (which we just bought, which is why I’m entering this… lotttts of space to fill).
Anyway, I recovered the stool for the vanity a couple years ago which I love, and then we just switched out the drawer handles on that and the chest of drawers for some we found at World Market. And it makes a WORLD of difference. The bed is still super drab, but the other two pieces now have character :) What can I say… I’m always inspired by your DIYness (and your recent trip to World Market).
Do entries that are way too long get an advantage? They should.

Furnish Me!!! My mother’s antique bureau that I inherited after she died… It has this amazing built-in sliding compartment for jewelry in the top drawer, and I remember playing with all of her costume jewelry as a child. It’s also a beautiful piece.

My favorite piece is a huge round antique mirror that I lugged from my hometown (Baltimore) all the way back to NYC on the train and subway! Couldn’t feel my arms afterwards, but its worth it to see it in my apartment every day.

Furnish me! My sofa I bought yesterday! Not because it was the most expensive or nicest, but because it’s the first big piece I’ve bought myself.
Paula says

My favorite piece of furniture is a vintage jacobean style table my parents bought at an auction in Arkansas. A friend’s dad refinished it for us, and it is gorgeous! It’s in my dining room right now, but I can’t wait to use it as my kitchen table after the remodel.

I love an old “bar” that belonged to my day back in his single days—I used to crawl inside and hide there when I was a kid! I painted the outside white and the inside turquoise and am so proud of how it turned out. It’s the perfect piece for our tiny yet funky bungalow!
