***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***
Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

Furnish me!! We are very proud of a black leather sofabed couch we got for free from a neighbor – it’s clean, looks cute and perfect for overnight guests
Melanie says
Furnish Me! My favorite piece is my dining room table that sat untouched for years in our family’s barn. It has survived a fire and reminds me of “home”.
Rebecca Law says
Furnish me!! My favorite piece of furniture is our dining room sideboard. It was an old dresser of my husbands, and I’m proud that we were able to repurpose it :)

My favorite piece is my childhood dresser – it was passed down through all of the girls in our family – mom, aunt, and me. In the 70’s it was green and pink, it was stained by my father in the 90’s, and “shabby-chic’ed” my me and a friend in college. Getting ready to move in the fall and thinking of painting it a bold color.

I’m proud of a 1950’s buffet that acts as a dresser in my guest bedroom. It was the first full-price piece of furniture that my grandparents ever purchased. After 52 years of use, and about ten coats of paint, I decided to re-finish it to it’s original wood-grain beauty.
Molly says
FURNISH ME! We bought a “fancy” gold velvet sofa for our first grown-up living room this year. It’s beeeeautiful but we’re still scared to sit on it a lot!

It’s a tie for me – I have a vintage sewing desk given to me by my best friend that I’ve turned into my office desk, and my grandmother’s beautiful round oak dining table. Both gifts, both vintage, both so beautiful. I treasure them!

My absolutely favorite piece of furniture in our house is our “coat cubby” that my husband built. We lived in an old farmhouse without closets for 5 years, so eventually it became an absolute must to have some sort of place to store our coats, hats, gloves, etc. I found a picture in a magazine of a storage unit that I liked, so we drew up plans, my husband built it, and I painted it! I love how well we work together! <3 I wouldn't trade it for anything!

My curio cabinet….I loved it in the store, but it was $3600. Went back in one day and it was marked down to $1000. Sold!

My favorite piece is a hutch I got on craigslist for $100. The picture online was terrible, so I was planning to paint it, but when I saw it in person, I knew I could never paint that beautiful wood!

Furnish me! I love my couch… I scored it at a pottery barn floor sample sale for a great price!

I’m most proud of an old rocking chair I reupholstered myself, whilst hugely preggo, for our new son’s nursery. Every time I look in his nursery I want to give myself a high five!

Furnish me!!! The greatest piece I own is a vintage china cabinet. So unique and I got a great price on it!

FURNISH ME! My fiance and I are just beginning to actually BUY things for our apartment. When we first moved in everything was hand-me-down. We just bought the perfect sofa with a chaise lounge on it – the perfect size for our tiny apartment. It gives us so much extra seating without taking up the room of a traditional sectional.

The greatest piece I currently own is a balloon-dog lamp I bought at Target the other day for 20 bucks. It’s metallic and Jeff Koons-style, shaped like a balloon-animal dog that has a lampshade for a head, and I had to have it…
KRISTIE says
FURNISH ME! I’m proud of a dresser that my husband and I refinished together to use as a tv stand. I’m proud that it was team effort! It’s extra special to have something in our living room straight from our hearts :)

I recently bought new bedroom furniture that I adore.

Furnish me. I inherited by grandmother’s rocking chair but didn’t like the upholstery or the color of the stain. I had it refinished and found a modern graphic fabric and we now use it everyday to read bedtime stories to our 2 year old son.

FURNISH ME! I have an old campaign desk (more like a portable hutch you put on a desk…it was used by gentlemen in days of yore to hold their papers, etc for travel) passed down from my grandfather that I like.
Jamie E. says
Furnish Me!!! My favorite piece of furniture is my dining table. I inhereited it, and it was originally my great, great grandfather’s. It can extend to be a 12 foot table.
Rachel says
FURNISH ME! I love my old comfy armchair. It’s older than me — inherited from my parents. The pattern is as ugly as sin, but it’s the best to curl up and read in.
Sara says
Furnish Me!! Favorite piece of furniture ***sap alert*** was our daughter’s crib and dresser. I was emotional and gooey, and seeing it set up in her room made me more emotional and gooey on the inside…I think for me, it’s the memories and people behind the pieces…:)

Furnish me! They aren’t expensive by any means, but priceless to me! My mom gifted me a pair of foo dogs for my first apartment! She said she bought them from a yard sale for her first apartment. I own quite a few yard sale foo dogs now!

I have a campaign furniture desk desk that I found at salvation army for 20 bucks. I am stripping it down and will saw off the desk part to make it into a dresser. I think I want to paint it a beautiful deep pink. I have never had a pink piece of furniture. I am so stocked about it!

Expedit from IKEA. Truly. I love it so much and I think it will last forever. Perhaps it’s cheap. But it is endlessly functional and good-looking.

Today my fave piece of furniture is an end table I just refinished. Now it is bright turquoise. And instead of spending cash on new furniture, I spent $3.50 on a can of spray paint to update something I already had.

My favorite piece is an old upright piano my parents gave me when I was 12. It was used so it came with some “character”.

FURNISH ME! we just bought a new-to-us house 4 DAYS AGO!… we are moving from california to north carolina and 1 of the 3 furniture items that we ended up moving to the east coast is my ever-so-favorite $15 end-table that is a distressed white with royal blue paint peeking through (from approximately 3 paint jobs ago… possibly from the 70s or 80s). the drawers get stuck, the legs are uneven, my husband rolls his eyes at it… i adore it!

“Furnish Me! My greatest piece is an antique console table that belonged to my grandmother. It needs a little attention but it is beautiful!

“FURNISH ME!” I’m not the sort of person who’s acquired lots of “pieces” of furniture. I do have a handful of ikea items I enjoy. But for favorites: Our farmhouse ining table is pretty awesome. We made it between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Our first big woodworking project. Thanks Ana White. It cost less than $200 to make. Pretty great price for a table that seat 6 to 10 with extensions.

FURNISH ME! My husband and I splurged on a trunk coffee table from Crate and Barrel right around the time we got married. It was the first piece of furniture we bought that didn’t come with an allen wrench and assembly instructions. In a small condo, it has been well worth it. We store extra blankets and our board games in it, and it looks amazing to boot!
Julie says
Furnish me! My buffet, it has been with me before I got married. I have used it as a tv stand, dresser and sofa table. This baby has been a workhorse!
Jayme says
FURNISH ME!!! My favorite piece is an antique dresser from a local furniture company that we bought at a thrift store and refinished with apple green milk paint for my son’s dresser/changing table combo.

Holy goodness! This is a seriously amazing giveaway.
Without a doubt, my favorite piece of furniture in our apartment is our new IKEA IVAR bookcase. We hacked it a little and styled it up. It’s got clean lines, a solid build, it’s pretty awesome! Plus it was pretty easy on the wallet. Gotta love IKEA! :D

The piece that I’m proudest of owning is the sewing machine table my granny bought in 1975 and gave to me 3 years ago. It still has all of the original extra parts, receipts and manuals.
