Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

My favorite piece is my childhood dresser – it was passed down through all of the girls in our family – mom, aunt, and me. In the 70’s it was green and pink, it was stained by my father in the 90’s, and “shabby-chic’ed” my me and a friend in college. Getting ready to move in the fall and thinking of painting it a bold color.

I’m proud of a 1950’s buffet that acts as a dresser in my guest bedroom. It was the first full-price piece of furniture that my grandparents ever purchased. After 52 years of use, and about ten coats of paint, I decided to re-finish it to it’s original wood-grain beauty.

It’s a tie for me – I have a vintage sewing desk given to me by my best friend that I’ve turned into my office desk, and my grandmother’s beautiful round oak dining table. Both gifts, both vintage, both so beautiful. I treasure them!

    FURNISH ME!

My absolutely favorite piece of furniture in our house is our “coat cubby” that my husband built. We lived in an old farmhouse without closets for 5 years, so eventually it became an absolute must to have some sort of place to store our coats, hats, gloves, etc. I found a picture in a magazine of a storage unit that I liked, so we drew up plans, my husband built it, and I painted it! I love how well we work together! <3 I wouldn't trade it for anything!

FURNISH ME! My fiance and I are just beginning to actually BUY things for our apartment. When we first moved in everything was hand-me-down. We just bought the perfect sofa with a chaise lounge on it – the perfect size for our tiny apartment. It gives us so much extra seating without taking up the room of a traditional sectional.

“FURNISH ME!” I’m not the sort of person who’s acquired lots of “pieces” of furniture. I do have a handful of ikea items I enjoy. But for favorites: Our farmhouse ining table is pretty awesome. We made it between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Our first big woodworking project. Thanks Ana White. It cost less than $200 to make. Pretty great price for a table that seat 6 to 10 with extensions.

Without a doubt, my favorite piece of furniture in our apartment is our new IKEA IVAR bookcase. We hacked it a little and styled it up. It’s got clean lines, a solid build, it’s pretty awesome! Plus it was pretty easy on the wallet. Gotta love IKEA! :D
