Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME! I own one of five beautiful coffee tables my carpenter great-grandfather built from scraps when he was in his seventies. Its inlaid with about five different wood types and is oddly tall, at my mother’s request. Nothing in my entire house means more to me, excepting maybe my husband.

My favorite piece of furniture is an old cabinet that my husband and I bought on our honeymoon. We visited an antique shop and fell in love with the iron scrollwork and distressing, so much that we carted it 500 miles home in the back of our truck.
Even after 8 years, it has a treasured place in our kitchen.

FURNISH ME! Please :) The best piece I own is hands down my grandmother’s vanity. My dad refurbished it years ago as a Christmas gift. I never knew my grandmother, my namesake, but I love sharing this little piece of history with her.

My favorite furniture in my house would have to be my baby girl’s nursery set! It’s cherry wood, and both the crib and changing table are sleigh-bed style! I love them and they look gorgeous with the mostly mint green theme in her room!

FURNISH ME! Our best piece of furniture is our dining room table. It’s 7 feet of thick, beautiful heartwood yellow pine that used to be roof rafters from a really old house in New Orleans. We bought it directly from the craftsman who made it in PA and the sealed it ourselves. We saw the same basic table, most likely made by our guy…in a store nearby for twice the price! :) Score!

My favorite thing is probably a dresser I bought at a junk store for my daughter’s room. It’s the lovely french provincial-esque stuff from the 70s (?). It has beautiful lines/curves. AND…best of all – a secret compartment that flips out from behind one of the top drawers. What more could a girl want? Except maybe for it to be painted some high gloss white? :)

Christina Honkonen says
What an awesome way to FURNISH ME! some home pieces! My favorite piece of firniture is a china cabinet with iron work and painted with pink, green and blue stripes. It’s wonderfully shabby chic and was purchased with some hard earned green that came with lots of work and patience (I.e. we were poor and in love and worked hard for the money). It was one of our first big pieces of furniture and it will always remind me of being young and in love, which I still consider myself. ;)

Furnish me! I bought two beautiful antique dressers that came in a set with two twin headboards, a bedside table and a mirror, on craigslist for $375, and the amazing thing is that they are 1920s, maybe, and had been professionally refinished, so they are beautiful.
