Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME! The greatest piece we own is a hand-me-down couch from my mom. I will NEVER get rid of it. Reupholster–yes. But it is the perfect size, beautiful shape, but not so prissy we don’t live on it!

    FURNISH ME!!!!!

The greatest piece I own is a beautiful mahogany coffee table. It was one of the first pieces of furniture my husband and I purchased after we were married. We had nothing, so every weekend we were on the hunt for auctions, yard sales, and quaint antique stores. We got the coffee table at a great auction that advertised its event in the local paper for the wrong day! There was no one there! We got the table for next to nothing.

FURNISH ME . . .I found a big old green trunk at a local thrift shop and brought it home for less than thirty dollars. It’s beautifully battered and very heavy and solid. I’ve seen the same thing for ten times the price and about half the charm in Pottery Barn.

    FURNISH ME!

My husband’s childhood church was recently cleaning out some old furniture and they had a silent auction to try to raise a little extra money. We immediately zeroed in on a pair of mid-century modern chairs with great bones. The black vinyl is a little beat up, but we saw the potential and put in the lone bid ($25) for the chairs based on our super tight budget. They later came home with us and every single person who enters our home comments on them. We can’t wait to have them recovered some day, but until then, they’re still awesome and have so much character!

My favorite piece of furniture that my husband and I own is a TV stand from Crate & Barrel. We did find it on sale, but it was a definite splurge. We had looked at several stands but decided to splurge and get something sturdy made of real wood that will last us for years to come. (We hope.)

    FURNISH ME!
No doubt my greatest find was a Henredon Bel Air solid wood campaign-handled dovetailed dresser. I bought it at Goodwill for $39. It was sitting near the front of the store and some ladies were checking it out as I was paying for it, until the sales clerk notified them I was purchasing it. At this point a resounding “NOOOOOOOOO!!!!” rang out across the store and the ladies ripped open their wallets and offered me $80 for it. Then $100. I was so close to giving in and making the easiest profit EVER but I loved it so much and knew it was worth way more than that. They eyed me the whole way out of the store. I’m glad I had recruits close by to pick it up for me because I’m pretty sure they were waiting for the perfect opportunity for my back to be turned so they could pull off the greatest Goodwill heist of the year.

Furnish me!! My favorite piece is a vintage desk that I inherited from my grandmother. It used to sit in the corner of her kitchen. Now, I use it as an accent piece in my guest bedroom. I have to make the legs more stable but I love sitting there knowing that it once belong to my grandmother. When it arrived, I even found a handwritten grocery list in the drawer! Love, love, love this piece!
