Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

Furnish me! I have an amazing dresser that my mom scored for me when I was in college. It’s actually an old sideboard, so the drawers are nice and sturdy from being used to storing dishes. It’s an amazing, heavy piece of furniture that my husband and I have dragged through 4 moves so far!

My favorite piece is a step tansu–a Japanese chest of drawers. My parents bought this while we lived in Japan (I was in middle school) and they gave it to me. It’s actually three separate pieces that can be arrange into a step formation or into a more traditional rectangular buffet. I love it–it’s such a unique piece, has a history in my family and it has great storage!
Thanks for hosting the giveaway!

Furnish me! My favorite pieces are everything I’ve collected while traveling! I’ve been studying abroad for four months and I try and pick up something in every place I’ve gone, whether its adding to my antique teacup collection, scoring a new print, or buying a bunch of mismatching ceramic tiles, I love seeing what deals I can get to remind me of my travels!

Furnish me! The greatest piece of furniture I own is a mission-style antique wardrobe. After growing up in a home filled with antiques, I knew I wanted to fill my own home with them some day. This wardrobe was my first foray into the wonderful world of antiques. I worked at Dairy Queen the summer after my freshman year of college and used my money to buy it. A friend of my mom owned the store and even taught me how to haggle to get a better price! Not only is it a gorgeous piece with a lot of character, it holds some great memories.

FURNISH ME!! My favorite piece of furniture in my house would have to be this dark brown old tufted leather sofa that my husband and I found at a “Bargain Barn”. We got it for a steal…only $80 and after moving it around various times in our house, finally found the perfect place for it. I love the worn look of the leather and the sofa is still in excellent shape!

I found a fabulous little behind-the-couch/console table at an antique store. It has acquired many dents and dings, though, as our 3 yr old uses it as his race track. Can’t wait to refinish it one day!

Oh pretty please…. FURNISH ME! I absolutely adore a kitchen table my husband and I splurged on when first engaged and stored in a family member’s basement until our big day and move in together. It’s gorgeous and we get compliments on it all the time. A close second in an all leather ottoman I scored for $50 bucks off of Craigslist, complete with nail head trim detail and all!

I found a walnut Eames LCW chair for a song! It is what has inspired a new found love of design (both furniture and interior). In fact, my design googling after finding the Eames chair is what ultimately let me to your blog :) Who knew one little chair could have such a huge impact on one person?

I have a beautiful dresser I inherited, I don’t know what it is made of, but it’s a beautiful dark cherry color, simple but pretty details, it’s really the only thing we have that looks like we didn’t get it at ikea, target, etc. Hopefully one day we’ll have more than one piece!

My favorite piece of furniture is my office desks. I put habitat for humanity doors on top of bookcases. All of it was refinished/painted white, and the bookcases have fabric backing. I love them because not only do I get almost 15 ft of workspace, but they will be easy to move out of my apartment, and best of all, I made it myself! (P.S., totally inspired by the door desk in your old house!)

Probably a favorite piece I have is an old, Odorless (brand? we’re not sure – but glad it’s odorless)metal icebox. My husband purchased it 22 years ago when he bought a 2nd hand stove for our first home. Over the years, I’ve painted it numerous time (I know – greatly devaluing it, but I was young when I began the repainting.) It has been painted with buffaloes and snakes (matching my son’s quilt)and held boxes of legos, action figures and crayons. It’s latest incarnation is in my kitchen, now light blue with all of the chrome hardware stripped and looking shiny full of my crafting supplies.
