Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

My favorite piece would have to be our dresser. It was a piece from Thomasville Furniture that the stain was slightly off on and they weren’t able to sale. (Although you would never know!) My mom worked as the nurse at the local factory and was able to give the piece a good home! :-)

My husband and I close on our first house next week, and we’d love a head-start on new furnishings! My favorite piece we own is my great-grandmother’s old sewing table. I refinished it, and added new hardware and it currently serves as my bedside table.

I bought this chair i call “Alice Chair” because it makes me feel like Alice in Wonderland, with its oversized back. I’m still figuring out whether to refinish it or live with the “shabby chic” peeling paint look. It was an impulse purchase and i ended up having to stuff it inside my tiny car which was already full of pillows and other things, but every time i look at it, i can’t but help feel glad i made that purchase.

FURNISH ME!!! I love my repurposed dresser…my mom took an old college dorm dresser and refinished it to look vintage whitewash. Love, love, love.

I love all the furniture I’ve inherited from my grandparents, who had great taste, but my favorite piece of furniture is my grandmother’s desk. It has little cubbies and drawers and a secret drawer and I was fascinated by it as a kid! It reminds me of my grandmother every time I look at it.

My favorite piece is a recliner I got a few years ago. It’s always in recline but you can adjust how far. It has such a beautiful line. It’s much too big for our tiny house, but it’s the one piece of furniture I couldn’t bear to part with!

The greatest piece in my house is probably my wine crate bookshelf. I got every last box for the bargain price of FREE. And I probably lost at least 5 pounds, walking and carrying those suckers all over Boston. :-)

Our greatest piece is a custom made vintage hutch that we found at a local consignment shop. We painted it a medium gray color and it looks wonderful! Best of all, we stumbled upon the hutch when the store was having a 25% off sale!

We have a black couch that is over 10 years old that is still awesome. Some Italian brand, and yes, it’s microfiber. But the high end kind. Not a mark on it that won’t come off.
Kitty says
FURNISH ME – PLEASE.
Best piece of furniture is our outdoor patio set we bought when first married – almost 20 years ago. We got a eating table/4 chairs, love seat and two side arm chairs with coffee table. Very high quality and still standing up great – even the cushions are STILL holding up after 15 years staying outdoors 365 days in California and 5 years in PNW but put away every day in the summer even ;(
Sara says
Furnish Me!! My favorite piece is my dining set. It’s a basic but pretty wood table from Pottery Barn that I bought off my sister for $35 and I’ve collected vintage wood chairs that I’ve painted in fun pops of color. We don’t have many awesome pieces so this would be a major score!

My fav “piece” is actually a set of 4 wrought iron chairs I bought 8 years ago from Pier 1. They are different designs and make the perfect mix and match with any kitchen table. With chair cushions, of course.

When I got my first apartment three years ago, I “splurged” on two IKEA Vibbyn chairs for my living room. I love the flair their mod-inspired lines and rattan lines add, especially with paired with a bright printed pillow. I know I’ll be using these gems for years to come.

My favorite piece of furniture is a simple wooden secretary that was my grandmother’s and sat in my bedroom as I grew up. It’s chipped and wobbly, but special and functional nonetheless.

I love the small oil landscape I happened to find at a small local store going out of business. It’s not a piece of furniture per se, but it’s the first serious piece of art I ever bought and it makes any room look so sophisticated.

Furnish me. It’s technically not a piece of furniture but I have an antique map of Iowa from the early 1900s that is from my great grandfathers furniture store.
Sandra says
Furnish Me! When I was in college, my parents bought 2 side tables and a kidney-shaped coffee table at a garage sale for $25: all made of this beautiful walnut, but they had to sand through layers of lacquer and cigarette butt burns. They have been with me since college, through kids, and I can’t part with them.
