A Little Clara Cluster
We finally got a frame grouping up on the wall in the playroom/future big-girl room. And as predicted it was definitely inspired by the bean. It’s full of things we think will be helpful and fun for her, and when it came to hanging it we tried a little alternative to our usual paper template method (which we outlined here when we hung our hallway frame wall). This time around we tried an old Candice Olson trick. Basically you use a giant roll of paper to make one big template (we used some protective paper from Home Depot leftover from our kitchen reno). Do you guys remember when she used to do this all the time back when her show had that sceee-bah-dee-dap-deee-dow-ahhh scatting intro? The good news is that any type of paper will work, so even if you just have a few pieces of printer paper taped together or a poster board or two, it should accomplish the same goal.

The first step to this project was bringing in all of the frames and art we have (most of which was cluttering up this room when it was a junk room, and was later tucked into the closet in the guest room) and laying it all out on the floor. Sure, it makes the room look crazy for a second, but it’s nice to see everything all spread out.

Then we just shuffled things around on the rug in a few different arrangements and switched things in and out and up and down until we liked the look of things. Oh but one tip is to measure the wall and take a guess about how wide and how long you want the arrangement to be and lay out two tape measures if you have them, just like we did below. That way you can try to build an arrangement in that predetermined width and height.

Once we were happy with the arrangement, we broke out the paper from the basement and cut a piece to that size. If we were smart we would have built the arrangement on the paper to begin with, but it only took about a minute to slip the paper under everything so it was sitting on that instead of the rug.

After we made sure we liked everything’s placement by nudging a few things around just a little here and there, we broke out the marker and traced the outline of each item onto the paper. That made it look sort of like a kid’s puzzle (easy to reassemble, if you know what I mean). Of course it’s important to use a marker that doesn’t bleed through and mark up your rug (we used a washable black Crayola marker from Clara’s collection since we worried a Sharpie might go through). Oh but just marking the art’s outline isn’t all. The key is also to mark where the nail – or nails – need to go on each item in order to hang it.

That way when you tape the paper up on the wall you know what goes where from the outline and you know where to actually put the nails thanks to those “x” marks you’ve made on each one. As for how we pinned down exactly where each nail should go on the template, we just measured where the hook or wire was on the back of the frame (ex: centered and an inch down from the top) and transfered that measurement to our paper by marking the center and going down an inch before making an x for the nail spot).
Oh and one “duh” tip would be to make sure your paper isn’t slanting up or down on the wall or you’ll end up with a wonky arrangement (we grabbed a level and ran it along a few parallel frame edges that we had drawn to make sure they were level before proceeding).

Then you can just hammer a nail right through the paper at each marked nail spot to hang things.

Then just rip the paper down after you add all the nails. They happily stay in the wall and the paper should come down with one swift tug.

Then you’re all set to hang each item on the assigned nails. Boom. No measuring at all.

As for the significance of the stuff we framed, we thought the clock would be functional since a few friends of ours have said they’re great to have in big kid rooms since you can say things like “when the short hand is on the eight you can get up in the morning.” Not sure if she’ll take our word on that once she moves into this room, but it’s a nice romantic idea. Ha!
A few items are especially meaningful book projects that we did (the Virginia cut-out art, the zig-zag paint chip art, the navy frames that a bunch of things are hanging inside, and the wood painted art with a Richmond monument on it). Then there are some other things in the mix like the red and orange painting that Clara made herself…

… and a sweet free printable that I got here and filled in with colored pencils.

There’s even a fabric napkin from HomeGoods that I grabbed for a few bucks and have been dying to frame.

I just cut it down to size and shoved it in. You know the girl likes flamingos…

And on the bottom next to the framed former-napkin, there are two plastic trays from Marshall’s a while back (they’re meant to be serving trays, but I just used 3M to hang them up among the mix).

We like how the navy in the frames and the whale trays ties into the curtains we made.

So that ends the giant paper template adventure that left an old blank spot in the room looking sweet and personalized for the bean. What are you guys hanging? Ever use the giant piece o’ paper technique? Have you hung any trays or napkins on the wall? Do you sort of miss that weird old scatting Candice Olson intro? I don’t think I realized how hilarious it was until it was gone. I took it for granted. Sniffle.

Candace Olsen is my favourite! & Sarah Richardson. Good ol’ Canadian ladies. Since getting married we haven’t had cable, but I had a fall and am staying at my parents now on my crutches since our bathroom is gutted and I can’t get to the basement one…definitely catching up on my design shows!
That room is coming together so beautifully! Where will you store things now that Clara’s big girl room and the sunroom are put together? We were in Charlotte for your book signing last night and were wondering where you store all the presents people give you. It was quite a collection! And I’m sure you’ve gathered hundreds of items by now. Here’s my post about the event:
http://sweetenedspaces.blogspot.com/2013/02/act-fool.html Thanks for being so fun!!
As you’re so sweet! We had so much fun last night! Thanks for coming! Mainly we use the guest room closet and the basement to store spare items now. Folks at signings are too kind, but thankfully many items are tasty treats, small items like sticker books for Clara, or little pieces of clothing like a homemade dress or a hat, so thankfully things are pretty simple to eat/use/store.

I absolutely love this! I think it’s my favourite part of her room so far.
I really like how you hung those whale trays! So smart. I would’ve never thought to hang those on the wall if I saw them in the store, but they work so well in the room. Definitely something fun and unexpected. I love the flamingo napkin too!
Hi House lovers! I´ve just finished painting a fiberboard rounded mirror(it´s yellow!) and the guy is wainting to be hanged in a turquoise chevron wall…can´t wait to finish the whole project! XXX agus
Sounds awesome!

I love the whale trays and framed napkin, you remind me to look at objects for the fun designs and potential, rather than what they ARE.
Also, I’m kind of embarrassed by how long it took me to ‘read’ your spelled-out scatting at the beginning of the post… I may or may not have said it out loud a couple times… but now I totally know which intro you’re talking about!
Haha!

A comment and a question.
Love that when I click on a link in a comment, and then hit the back button, I get redirected to your page and to right where I was reading. Such a neato coding trick you guys! If that didn’t happen I’m sure I’d be too hesitant to click on a link. Or I’d have to copy it into a browser. Whew too much!
A clarifying question: I read that comment about measuring the nails Thanks!! Helpful. But in the post you mention leveling several times. To clarify. Did you first level the frames on the paper and then again level the paper once it was on the wall? Was there another leveling in there I missed? I can just see myself attempting this and having it all askew.
Thanks!
We just eyed it when we laid it out on the paper and leveled the paper on the wall :)

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that this morning’s post didn’t come up in Google Reader for me… not sure if that’s due to a problem on my end or yours (or Google’s). I was worried that something had happened when I didn’t see anything new today! ;)
Thanks Haley. We’re on the case of figuring out what’s up. Appreciate the heads up!
-John
Gorgeous grouping! I’ve used brown paper wrapping, gift wrapping paper, parchment paper, etc., whatever I have on hand, for a long time. It does make hanging everything so much easier!
So, here’s a totally off topic question (I couldn’t find a recent post to ask this with): Where do you guys store all your CDs and DVDs? Did these used to be in the playroom? Given that $herdog was/is such an Eminem fan, I’d imagine you guys had a bunch from pre-iTunes era, like we do. They seem too sentimental to throw out, but I also don’t want them taking up precious closet space. Help!
We have one storage ottoman under the desk in the living room with some DVDs but for the most part we rent movies instead of buying them and burn all of our music onto our computers or iPhones.

New throw pillows or did I miss a recent post? Either way, they look great in the room!
The C one is from Joss & Main, the gradient ones are West Elm and the others are HomeGoods!

I love the room! Really coming together so fun! I was looking to purchase the same gradient pillow from West Elm and had a question. It looks like it has pink, red and orange in it. Does it? I am hoping!!! Also, is it bigger then your green zebra stripe pillows from west elm or are they the same size? I am trying to judge the size by those since I have those pillows too. Your input will be so helpful THANKS!!!
I think it’s slightly bigger than the green zebra pillow. And it mostly has red and orange, so not really much pink. Hope it helps!

Hey, are you guys having issues with your RSS feed? My Google Reader didn’t update with this new post today.
Yeah, something’s up with it today and we’re trying to sort it out now. Sorry for the trouble!
-John
I’ve done this before and have used wrapping paper :-)
I am so doing this in our living room! I have been putting things together to put up a gallery and this is so the way to go. Thank you!!!
OMG I totally forgot about that Candice Olson intro song bahaha. It was so catchy!! Also FYI your posts didn’t come up in my Google Reader today, although I’m just betting you’ve probably had like 1,000 other people tell you that already today ;)
Thanks! We have no idea what’s wrong but we’re searching for a cause and a fix :)

I’m not savvy enough to figure out how to reply in a thread in these comments, but I wanted to let you know that this post didn’t pull up for me in Google Reader today, either. I just unsubscribed and re-subscribed to you guys, and still no luck. Wonder if it’s something on Google Reader’s end?
Yeah, there’s something up with Feedburner that we’re trying to sort out now. Thanks!

I had to Youtube Divine Design just to hear the intro song and I found this vid! Too cute! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_xfHOq5bLU

I love that in one of the pics you can see your daughter’s foot! I bet she loved it. Great job!
Looks great! I especially like how the whale’s holding it down.
I am still too impatient for even the simple paper method, so alas our walls can turn into hole city after I have at ‘em. (In my defense, we have incredibly old, thick, impossible walls, so sometimes you plan to make a hole somewhere and a nail won’t go in in that spot anyways). We’ve got all sorts of things hanging up around here: animal heads (ceramic, of course), wrapping paper, an old ampersand, a big oversize Indian bowl (pro tip: 3M strips on the flattest part of the base of the bowl has held it up nice and strong for months now)…
Love the wall! I so wanted to come to Charlotte last night, but I live an hour away and just couldn’t work it out on a weeknight. Bummer!
I have a question. How did you get the “I love everything about you” print to hang in the frame like that? I see the cardboard backing of the frame on the floor, but hanging on the wall all I see is glass between the print and the frame? Am I seeing things?
Ooh I have a post about that coming up soon! It’s a little DIY trick I made up as I went along. Haha!

That’s a super way to hang pictures. I will use your post as a reference for the future. And I especially like the picture that says,”I Love Everything About You”. What child wouldn’t feel loved after seeing that sentiment on her wall every day?!
I may have shed a tear when you brought up the old Divine Design. Candace was with us through our first 6 house purchases and when we had our three babies. *sniff sniff*
It was such a pleasure seeing my “I Love Everything” Coloring Print on your wall! :)
Love it so much!

I love how this room is coming together! I’m obsessed with the whale plates – what a great idea to hang it on the wall and it ties in so well with your navy accents.
Awesome! Thanks!!!
Very cute, but I’m scared that the whale’s aiming to eat the flamingos! ;-)
Hahaha!

Really looks great! And I’m so happy to see that clock! I’m a librarian and you’d be shocked and dismayed at how many kids these days don’t know how to tell time on a regular old analog clock – they only know digital!
Squi-dow, bada-ba baa dow… Now I’ve got that cycling around in my noggin. :)
The room is coming along great! I am totally loving those serving platters.
Love how Clara’s big girl room is coming together! Where did you find the cute aqua clock?
That was from Hobby Lobby!

Love it. The room is looking great. That rug is dooooope!
I haven’t had television since I moved out of my parents’ house 5 years ago, so I had no idea Candice Olson changed her theme song! I love the original song, I felt the scatting fit perfectly into her funny show.
Also, of course, Clara’s room is really coming together nicely. The middle of a project always throws me off, but it’s looking great!
I’m getting ready to hang a grid of six large IKEA Ribba frames in two rows of three — all evenly spaced like the panes of a window, very similar to what you’ve done in your living room. Unfortunately, they have those two clips on the back that you run a wire through, so I’m afraid it’s going to be a pain to get them to all line up. I guess I’ll just put the nails in two level lines and then adjust those little clips until they all line up perfectly.
Do you have any advice for a quicker and less annoying way to do it? :)
Yes that’s totally what I’d do!
xo,
s
Looks great! I’ve been loving putting things that are a wee bit unconventional on the wall lately – so I’m totally digging the trays. It’s fun to mix it up – add some texture and interest. Clara’s room is looking so good!
omg I totally have that Candice Olsen intro song stuck in my head now! LOL Love the art you picked and that you included her art!! That flamingo napkin is AWESOME!!
Ahhh I do the Candace Olsen scat all the time! Lol
This room is looking GREAT! I love how each piece of art that you put up onto the wall has meaning — great for any room, but especially for a kiddo’s room. :-) I also really like your ideas to hang things that aren’t necessarily meant to be hung — i.e. serving pieces and framed napkins. That’s pretty brilliant! ;-)
I’m doing a gallery wall too in my daughter’s room but I have some spray painting projects to work on before I can actually hang the stuff. The weather is not cooperating though. :/

Melissa
Love how this room is progressing. Random question – is Clara still sleeping in her crib or did you convert it to a toddler bed?
Yup she’s still happily in her bed. It doesn’t convert so she’ll sleep in this daybed when she transitions :)
xo,

Definitely using this trick when I hang up my own gallery wall! Still collecting everything I want to hang up. Also loving the way Clara’s big girl room is coming together, can’t wait to see the final product!
I love this idea from Candace! One little tip (which you probably already thought of): I secure a piece or two of looped painters tape behind the frames so they don’t wiggle. :)
So smart!

Do you guys have Michael’s stores in your area? I was there today and saw stuff that made me think of Clara’s Big Girl Room. It was in the area that’s kind of a Dollar Spot–some of the stuff costs up to $5. They have different themes and the collection I’m referring to was called Melody and Lace, or something like that. It had cute chipboard letters, small frames, etc. in navy and other colors that reminded me of the room. Check it out :)
Sounds awesome! We’ll have to check it out!

I have never wanted to awkwardly hug a wall before, but this one does it. It looks sooooo great- I am totally in love with the whale plates. I’m gonna need to get me some of that. ;) Thanks for the tip on gallery hanging, one of these days I will be brave enough and try one. :)
Looks like a great Marshalls find on the whale serving trays!! I loved them so much I googled and look what I found. I LOVE Thomas Paul and would die to put these in my sons room.

Oh my gosh, I love this. How I wish I could hammer nails into my walls, but, sadly, mine are plaster. Even hanging small things involves getting out the drill, screws and anchors.
That is a really great idea for hanging gallery walls! I want to do this in my daughter’s room with empty frames and different size/shape/color initials inside!
Ok, so I just want to know about something you didn’t hang. Did I spot a squirrel? Is that an actual ready to hang on your wall squirrel? If so, where is it from? If not, how were you planning to hang it on the wall? I’ve got a thing for squirrels and would love to get my hands on that! By the way, the wall looks great and now that I see an easier way to do the wall gallery I might actually attempt it!
It’s from a shop in DC that was closing so they had a huge sale! Will have to check the manufacturer name and blog about it when we find a spot for him!

I love love love the monument piece. Is that a book project?
Yup, the whole tutorial is in there :)

I love love love the flamingo’s… so gorgeous! The whole thing is so gorgeous. x
YAY FLAMINGOS! Looks adorable. xo Liz
Just moved into a rental and finished hanging frames on Friday. Did it the old fashioned way using a ruler and level, and frame layout suggestions from your book, of course! Wish I could have foreseen the future on this post because the big paper template seems much easier. Oh well, there will be a next time. As for what I hung – a bunch of pictures from my recent trip to Colombia. :)
Aw, that’s awesome to hear that the frame layout suggestions in the book came in handy :)

That is an adorable arrangement….have you tried the wax paper technique for hanging a gallery?? It’s like what you did except that the wax paper is clear so you put everything on the floor upside down and you can take a black sharpie and dot it where the nail goes then tape the wax paper on the wall. It is AMAZING….you can google it or I did a post on it too….
