A Little Clara Cluster
We finally got a frame grouping up on the wall in the playroom/future big-girl room. And as predicted it was definitely inspired by the bean. It’s full of things we think will be helpful and fun for her, and when it came to hanging it we tried a little alternative to our usual paper template method (which we outlined here when we hung our hallway frame wall). This time around we tried an old Candice Olson trick. Basically you use a giant roll of paper to make one big template (we used some protective paper from Home Depot leftover from our kitchen reno). Do you guys remember when she used to do this all the time back when her show had that sceee-bah-dee-dap-deee-dow-ahhh scatting intro? The good news is that any type of paper will work, so even if you just have a few pieces of printer paper taped together or a poster board or two, it should accomplish the same goal.

The first step to this project was bringing in all of the frames and art we have (most of which was cluttering up this room when it was a junk room, and was later tucked into the closet in the guest room) and laying it all out on the floor. Sure, it makes the room look crazy for a second, but it’s nice to see everything all spread out.

Then we just shuffled things around on the rug in a few different arrangements and switched things in and out and up and down until we liked the look of things. Oh but one tip is to measure the wall and take a guess about how wide and how long you want the arrangement to be and lay out two tape measures if you have them, just like we did below. That way you can try to build an arrangement in that predetermined width and height.

Once we were happy with the arrangement, we broke out the paper from the basement and cut a piece to that size. If we were smart we would have built the arrangement on the paper to begin with, but it only took about a minute to slip the paper under everything so it was sitting on that instead of the rug.

After we made sure we liked everything’s placement by nudging a few things around just a little here and there, we broke out the marker and traced the outline of each item onto the paper. That made it look sort of like a kid’s puzzle (easy to reassemble, if you know what I mean). Of course it’s important to use a marker that doesn’t bleed through and mark up your rug (we used a washable black Crayola marker from Clara’s collection since we worried a Sharpie might go through). Oh but just marking the art’s outline isn’t all. The key is also to mark where the nail – or nails – need to go on each item in order to hang it.

That way when you tape the paper up on the wall you know what goes where from the outline and you know where to actually put the nails thanks to those “x” marks you’ve made on each one. As for how we pinned down exactly where each nail should go on the template, we just measured where the hook or wire was on the back of the frame (ex: centered and an inch down from the top) and transfered that measurement to our paper by marking the center and going down an inch before making an x for the nail spot).
Oh and one “duh” tip would be to make sure your paper isn’t slanting up or down on the wall or you’ll end up with a wonky arrangement (we grabbed a level and ran it along a few parallel frame edges that we had drawn to make sure they were level before proceeding).

Then you can just hammer a nail right through the paper at each marked nail spot to hang things.

Then just rip the paper down after you add all the nails. They happily stay in the wall and the paper should come down with one swift tug.

Then you’re all set to hang each item on the assigned nails. Boom. No measuring at all.

As for the significance of the stuff we framed, we thought the clock would be functional since a few friends of ours have said they’re great to have in big kid rooms since you can say things like “when the short hand is on the eight you can get up in the morning.” Not sure if she’ll take our word on that once she moves into this room, but it’s a nice romantic idea. Ha!
A few items are especially meaningful book projects that we did (the Virginia cut-out art, the zig-zag paint chip art, the navy frames that a bunch of things are hanging inside, and the wood painted art with a Richmond monument on it). Then there are some other things in the mix like the red and orange painting that Clara made herself…

… and a sweet free printable that I got here and filled in with colored pencils.

There’s even a fabric napkin from HomeGoods that I grabbed for a few bucks and have been dying to frame.

I just cut it down to size and shoved it in. You know the girl likes flamingos…

And on the bottom next to the framed former-napkin, there are two plastic trays from Marshall’s a while back (they’re meant to be serving trays, but I just used 3M to hang them up among the mix).

We like how the navy in the frames and the whale trays ties into the curtains we made.

So that ends the giant paper template adventure that left an old blank spot in the room looking sweet and personalized for the bean. What are you guys hanging? Ever use the giant piece o’ paper technique? Have you hung any trays or napkins on the wall? Do you sort of miss that weird old scatting Candice Olson intro? I don’t think I realized how hilarious it was until it was gone. I took it for granted. Sniffle.

I loved watching the time on the clock move forward in your various pics….looks like it was a pretty quick project! :)
Hahah! Yeah, it wasn’t too bad at all!

Three thoughts:
- I love the word wonky. I feel like I use it way too much. It’s nice to hear someone else use it!
- I’m liking the navy and gray you’re adding to the room. It’s really toning down all the pink.
- I too miss Candace Olsen. Mostly, I miss the old HGTV in general. All that’s on now is Love it or List it (blah), Property Brothers (yum), and House Hunters (meh).
I was really interested in how you hung those trays. I hung a tray (a very large one from Target) on our bedroom last year, using a special glue hanging thing meant to hang decorative plates. Well it lasted a week or two, then came crashing down, the hook came clean off. I still have the tray (love it) and am trying to figure out a good way to hang it. I’d be interested to know how long those 3M strips work.
Will keep you posted!

3M strips are amazing! I use them to hang lots of stuff now because I’m too lazy to get out the hammer and nails, and I’m a renter anyway. They come in different weight ranges, so as long as you’re in the right ballpark for how much your tray weighs, they will work great!
I love this technique! I did the same thing earlier this month but used wax paper instead! That way I could see through and was able to mark where the nail goes without any measuring. Here’s how it turned out:

Really smart!!

One of my goals for this year (hopefully sooner rather than later) is to hang a gallery wall/cluster of art work in our living room. I’m going to have to try this trick to hang them.
I love the composition! And the colors are working perfectly together..now the girl needs a HUGE mirror for dancing, and making faces in front of :)
Wait, wait, wait. You HAVE the white ceramic squirrel that clings to the wall that I took a screenshot of while I was watching TV and posted to your FB page last week? I am DYING!! If you want to replicate the white ceramic squirrel trifecta, that West Elm cookie jar has to go on sale eventually ;)
Hahahaha isn’t that crazy?! It’s exactly the same one.

What a genius idea! Candice Olson isn’t on TV in the uk, so I’ve never seen this done before but I’ll definitely be using this. Great tip, thanks.
Splee-dow-ba-ba-ba-dow-Splee-dow-pe-dow-Splee-dow-ba-ba-dow-Splee-dow!! Makes my husband laugh every time I scat that tune : )
Skeeee dah, bah dah doo dah dahhh, skeeee dah, bah dahh dahh doo dahhhh. (The Divine Design theme song.)
Clara’s room looks great! My fiance and I are moving across the country in two months and I’m so, so excited to have a new space to decorate and play with! (I found a beautiful solid wood dresser on Craigslist for $20 that I can’t wait to strip, restain, and put some new hardware on!) I’m a little overwhelmed by everything that has to get done before then, but I’m trying to ignore that :)
Love this! It seems so effortless, yet beautiful! I also love that it is asymmetrical. What will you do with the items that are currently hanging in the nursery?
We have lots of other bare walls so I’m sure they’ll migrate over after she fully transitions into this room (she still sleeps in there so we don’t want to disassemble it- haha!).
xo,
s
I loveeeee that whale and that print “I love everything about you”…adorbs! And you’re filling Clara’s big girl room with L.O.V.E. and I L.O.V.E. it!
Do you have instructions on the blog for the Virginia cut-out art? I have been wanting to do some wall art with old maps, pencil drawings, or cut-outs of the states my husband and I have lived in and live in now (we are Virginia too!) I really like the cut-out you have.
Thanks! That project is in the book, so you can find the tutorial there :)

What’s an easy way to mark on the paper where the nail needs to go? Especially if the frame has a wire hanger? This is always the trickiest part for me.
Are you going to move Clara’s other frame collection into her new room?
Once you trace the outline of the frame, look at the back and measure the nail placement (if it’s centered but an inch down from the top, just mark that spot on the template. With a wire just pull it as if a nail were holding it up and measure that spot :)
As for the art in the nursery, since she still sleeps in there we’ll probably transfer a few personal things once she officially moves into her big girl room.

I was wondering the same thing– thanks!
Zoe – someone earlier commented on a toothpaste trick (dab a spot of toothpaste on the back of the frame where the nail goes and put the frame on the paper). Takes all the guesswork out!
But I don’t think that would really work for the wire-hanging kinds, so I would hold it up with a finger and measure the distance between my finger and the top of the frame.
love this technique– thanks for sharing!
Coolest hanging method EVER!
I’m really interested in HOW you marked where the nails should go. That’s the hardest part of making a template for me since you can’t mark through a picture frame. Could you add a little note about how you did that?
Once you trace the outline of the frame, look at the back and measure the nail placement (if it’s centered but an inch down from the top, just mark that spot on the template :)

We’re trying (and failing) at hanging items in our son’s room. The most troublesome is an awesome handcrafted hat rack that my Mom made, but didn’t put any hanging attachments on the back. It’s pretty big and heavy and we want it securely on the wall so our 2.5 year old can hang up his own stuff. We’re not sure how to do so and Lowe’s was not helpful, so it remains sitting on our dinning room table. :(
BANGIN!
I hate that whale, BUT now I LOVE that whale!!!!
Really this is one of my favorite things you ever did…really
THAT WHALE. LOVE.
Since that was really my reaction to the first photo, I just thought I’d share :)
Hahaha! So funny!

Looking good!
I actually have a whole collection of frames with only paper napkins in them. I collect napkins and have over 400 in a box. Last year I decided to pick out some of my favourites and frame them, after being inspired by your wall of frames. I LOVE them and am so happy that I’m weird with a collection of napkins. I plan on switching some of them out soon, just to keep some variety in there.
Love that!

Oooh!! I love frame walls… I’ve been hanging anything and everything of meaning (slash stuff I think is cool) all over the walls of our staircase.
Where’s that clock from? It has a great retro vibe and I love the colour!
Thanks! It’s from Hobby Lobby a while back.

I have to try the paper. Last time I tried measuring, it went all wonky and eyeballing it went much better. Do you have any way of keeping the pictures straight? (Like in your hallway?) My wall next to my bed is filled with a grid, but munchkins looking at the pics (lots of their baby pics, pics of mommy and daddy) are very interesting and get touched, and are then all off-kilter. Do you take off the frame stand from the back so it’s weighted evenly? Or do you put a piece of sticky tack on the back?
I’m thinking I might get some sticky tack — remember that stuff you used in college posters? and put some on the back to keep them from moving around.
We do remove the frame stand and sometimes use sticky tack but didnt need it this time :)

Love the new gallery! The navy frames look great with all the pink in the room.
What a fun little girl’s room! I remember mine being basic white with a purple flowered wallpaper for eeeeeever (apparently I didn’t like it, as I tried to rip it off where it was next to my bed, lol). Can’t wait to see it evolve over the years, especially if Clara becomes paint-happy (she IS getting a lot of influence, lol) and wants to redo it every year or so. Will you guys just let her do what she wants, or will you try to keep major changes to a minimum ( although it could be WAY too early to start looking that far ahead, lol). Also, when she officially matriculates from the nursery to the big-girl room, will you take the wall decor arrangement from over her crib to the head of the bed? There’s some similar things in that grouping that would balance out the one you just posted at the foot of the bed so nicely :)
We definitely have a plan for an arrangement of something exciting over the daybed to balance things out. Haha how’s that for mysterious? Stay tuned! And as for how it’ll evolve I think we’re happy to play it by ear. I definitely think Clara will add things and edit things as her tastes change, and we always want her to feel at home.

Did you guys mention where you got clara’s pink bedding from? I love it!!
It was from Joss & Main before Christmas. Hope it helps!

Love the whale trays! And thanks so much for the link to the printable color sheet. The kid in me LOVES to color and the saver in me doesn’t want to spend any money on Valentine’s day this year, so this is prefect for my fiance! More money for the honeymoon!
Also if you don’t mind my asking, how much did you pay for the whale trays?
Good question! I keep remembering $12 but I don’t recall if they were $12 each or $12 total. So sorry!

Oh my GOSH! I am so happy you love the Candice Olsen “skee-bop” song. Whenever I see her and I’m around my husband (and when I’m by myself) I always go “skeeedaaa babada da dooo, skeeba dadadaadaaaa!”
Lets just say he may roll his eyes in shame while I also dance. Apparently he says I look like a leprechaun. I am a skee-boppin’, leprechaun dancing, Candice Olsen…a leprocansen. A leprecandacen.
Rant over.
xoxo Melissa
Such a great collection! The flamingos are super cute.
I love the paint chip art. So perfect for her room. Wasn’t that from the book? Or maybe I’m mixed up and it was from a long-ago post. Well, I love it. No good Petersik room would be complete without some paint samples.
Yup, that was a book project!

This is completely off topic, but have you all made any decision on your deck stain yet? Ours is in desperate need of staining and with all of the options out there, I’d love to hear your opinions. I’m hoping to find something that’s both eco-friendly and long-lasting!
We’re having the same challenge! Will share whatever we end up with!

I love how her room is coming together. Heck, makes me want to move in. :) Clara is a lucky girl!
No way! Just posted today on my little blog about my gallery wall I just got up… using paper.
We got the roll of paper from the local newspaper. It’s the end roll of newsprint (no ink) and for us it was $1 per HUGE roll! Check your local paper, we use it to cover tables for kids parties for coloring and all kinds of projects!

I love the color on the walls even more now!! Brilliant choice.
Very nice! It’s coming together!
You are so funny! I laughed at your typed skatting intro, because I loved it too! Was super quirky. I haven’t seen her show in a while so I didn’t know that it was no more!
The room is looking good! Also, I just saw this video of flamingos this morning and then saw that Clara loves them and thought you’d like to share it with her-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=CUb0evFZbNM
It’s hilarious!
That’s awesome!

I get the ‘make a grid on paper’ thing, but wondered how you guys make the placement of the nail. That always trips me up unless I flip the whole arrangment on it’s face and then mark.
If you scroll back through the comments we further explained that (just measure where it is on the back of the frame, like centered and an inch down, and transfer that measurement to your drawing in the paper – just mark the center and go one inch down).

My son is obsessed with clocks. Where did you get yours?
It was from Hobby Lobby!

I’ve been thinking of doing a wall grouping for each of my children. This just motivated me. Thanks.
Where can I find the tutorial for the paintchip art?
That’s in our book. Hope it helps!

Ah, I love the navy! I think my favorites are the whale and Clara’s masterpiece. Oh, and I colored that printable too!
Speaking of flamingos, Premier Prints has a new? flamingo line with pinks and orange and gray. I saw it at Hobby Lobby – so cute! Ikat dots, a chevron, a tribal. Here’s a link: http://www.fabric.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=2ab9e7ba-8156-4e08-afdf-ab5bc83fa88d
Really cute!

p.s. Fabric – do you wash/air dry/iron all your fabric before you use it? For instance, Clara’s curtains or your headboard fabric?
It’s always a smart idea to combat shrinking!
xo,

What a great idea! Thanks! FYI, if the old fashioned clock doesn’t work, when our daughter started rising at 5 am, we put a clock radio in her room & told her she had to play quietly until the music started. No way was I getting up at 5 if I could help it.
Smart!

Loving watching the progression of Clara’s big-girl room, but I’m missing out on her reactions to its development! Does she check it out every day? Does she ask you questions about what’s next or when it’s ready? I’d love to hear what she has to say about her new room on these posts!
Thanks for your hard work in providing me with 2 mini-breaks at work each day!
She’s very interested in each change and always notices and asks cute questions like “did I paint this?” And “I picked the curtains!” She seems to be having as much fun as we are. Haha!

A local printing company here gives away roll ends with several feet of paper on them but not enough for a commercial run … they’re good for art projects and things like this. A possible free alternative to buying the HD rolls?
Awesome tip!
xo,

I totally predict that someday soon YOU guys will have a show of your own! These are such clever, affordable tips; just love how you framed a napkin and hung serving trays as art! Think of it Sherry, you could have a Semi-Homemade-meets-decorating kind of show for those of us on a budget. I’m sold on the idea!
Haha I’m not so sure about that. Might be a hot mess.

Love it. . esp the whale :)
Just an fyi. . . this post didn’t pull up in Google Reader today. . . could just be me but I never have a problem with your posts so I thought I would let you know just in case you made any changes. If it continues I know to re-subscribe to you so I’m set. . just wanted to let you know!
Weird! Thanks for the heads up. We haven’t changed anything on our end but maybe it’s just being glitchy? Anyone else having this problem?
xo,

I had the same problem. No YHL in my google blog list today, sorry!
Still loving everything going on in the big girl room/playroom!
Yeah, sorry guys – we’re having a Feedburner issue and are trying to sort it out now. Thanks for the heads up!
-John

Just was coming over here to say the same thing – I didn’t get my daily dose of YHL this morning via Reader.
It didn’t show up in my google reader either
Bahahaha I just read the Candace intro to the same tune as Full House. Do you remember that? I can’t even read that any other way. Since you’re making this place a full house of love, I guess it fits. I guess?
Haha someone needs to make a mash up!
