Well, That’s One Way To Embrace Color
Feel free to file this under “a small house-related project that we did while enjoying a little – well it was actually pretty big – local event.” You already know Sherry and I are trying to embrace color more in this house, but this weekend I might have taken things a bit too far…

That’s my “after” Instagram photo following a 5K race that my younger sister and I did this weekend called Color Me Rad. I’m not sure what maniacal genius came up with the concept, but it was awesome. Basically you and your white t-shirt run 3.1 miles while people periodically douse you in technicolor cornstarch. They’re being held all over the country (along with a similar even called The Color Run) and it was – well, I’ll let our matching temporary tattoos explain:

Here’s my sister Carrie and I before the race. So clean. So naive.

Sherry was on cheering/Clara duty, but decided to get in on the action in her own colorful way. She grabbed a blank canvas and brought it along in the hopes of capturing a little abstract art while she spectated.

And just so you believe that she was actually there (we realized that when she carries the camera she’s never in photos), here’s a shot of us meeting a blog reader named Katherine, who was kind enough to snap this photo and share it with us on Facebook. Sherry wants me to note that she’s not too cool for school in her shades, she’s just a weirdo who didn’t realize that it wasn’t that sunny – and only later looked at this picture and blushed for wearing them before the sun started pounding down on us…

… which eventually did happen around 9am. And despite it being pretty early in the morning, the place felt like Mardi Gras. Well, except instead of beads it was packets of cornstarch being thrown around. Before we even left the start line our shirts (and faces) were already sporting some color.

Oh yeah, and those sunglasses were part of the race packet we got when we registered. You know, so we can all look more like a weird band of brothers (and sisters) running through colored powder. Ok, they were really to help keep said powder out of our eyes.

Fun fact: the guy in green shorts below is the guy at The Tile Shop who sold us our kitchen penny tile. He’s also the person that doused my stomach in orange before the start. I guess I should be glad it wasn’t grout or something.

Here we are actually coming in for our big finish… and getting sprayed with a packet of yellow powder that my dad tossed at us.

And here we are learning our lesson to keep our mouths closed.

Carrie and I actually remained pretty clean (relatively speaking) up to this point. Lots of people were practically rolling in powder by the end (we saw one guy literally rolling in it at one checkpoint). But the cleanliness all changed right after Sherry snapped the photo above. Because that’s when we ran through the finish line. The photo below isn’t mine, it’s my friend Lauren’s (thanks Lauren!) but it perfectly captures what finishing the race felt like.

Which is why we ended the race looking like this. Well, this is after we rinsed it out of our teeth.

Despite the complete and utter mess-fest that was the racecourse, Sherry and Clara managed to stay pretty darn clean. Clara’s stroller did get doused with a dusting of orange, but that’s about it.

Well, that and there were a few cookie crumbs on her face – though we can’t blame the race for that (it was all my mom, showing up at 9am with fresh baked cookies). Although if there were a race where they threw cookies at you, I’d totally be game.

And since Sherry’s canvas also stayed pretty clean, we took matters into her own hands (and by matters I mean powder on the ground) and pelted it with all the colors we could find. Not exactly a masterpiece, but making it was pretty fun.

We actually preferred the look of it more once Sherry shook some of the excess powder off of it.

Then it started to rain a bit on our way back to the car, so some of the lighter colors washed off the canvas. And by the time we got home and hung it up it was looking completely different once again.

Overall we thought it was a fun little project with a cool story behind it. We’ll need to seal it with some sort of sealant spray to keep it for the long run, so we’ll share that update if and when we get ‘er done.

Actually, if there were any keepsake from the day that was truly representative of the madness (radness?), it’d be my shirt.

I mean, wouldn’t this look pretty cool behind a frame? Sherry insisted on snapping this photo because if nothing else we could get this printed and frame it to remember the whole color-riffic morning.

And I’m so glad she took that photo because between the light rain on our way out and me taking it off before sitting in the car, the nice speckled pattern started to turn into more of a streaky blob. And that blobbiness was only made worse when I attempted to preserve the color using Color Me Rad’s suggestion: soak in vinegar and then iron (since normal washing and drying would supposedly remove, rather than seal in the color). By the end of it all, the shirt was looking more like this:

Still colorful? Yes. But it’s looking more like a poor tie-dye attempt, which isn’t really the look we’re going for around here (blacklight anyone?). So I’ll probably hang on to the shirt as a spare work shirt, but don’t expect to see it in a frame anytime soon. But that doesn’t mean some of our photos won’t make it behind frames. Like this one perhaps…

Or maybe this one of the villainous variety. This is the shot that Sherry took after telling me it looked like I had a mustache.

I was totally channeling Littlefinger from Game of Thrones.

Anyone else do a Color Me Rad or Color Run in their town? Or have one on the calendar still to come? Or perhaps you’ve participated in some other crazy event like this? We’re always looking for rad new things to do so please share! Update: Since folks have been asking how I started running, how I train, what races I do, and all of that stuff I’m planning a running post about that sometime soon (sure we like to stick to home stuff, but every once in a while we go off the beaten path like: DIY haircuts? check. the best spam comment ever? check. a weird dream Sherry had? check.)
Psst- Who watched the Design Star finale? Did you think the right person won? Are you going to watch their show? Did you love Hilari as much as we did? Any and all TV thoughts are welcome (you know we love to park it on the couch and watch other people paint/decorate while we sit on our buns and blog the night away).

So excited! I’m doing the Color Run in Des Moines October 6; it looks like so much fun!
Were you successful at getting the color off of YOU? Some friends here did the Color Run and had green arms for days. :)
It took some scrubbing (blue was the hardest to get off by far) but I got it off! I recommend a washcloth and some serious elbow grease in the shower.
-John
We have one coming to Birmingham. I won’t be racing in it this year but hope I in the next year or so. It looks like so much fun! I love that y’all brought a canvas… Such a cool way to capture the moment.
OMG! John, that doesn’t even look like you under all that paint!
It does, however, look like it was a blast. Do you run every day to train for those? Trying to figure out how you do all those projects and train for a 5K? Pretty impressive.
I’m planning a post all about running/training/how I got into it, etc (since a bunch of people have actually been asking lately). Hope to share that soon!
-John
That would be great John! Please do this!
Oh yay, please do! I’ve been hoping for a post like that myself. :) Maybe you could include just how you manage to go running (more or less) regularly during busy times. I often can’t bring myself to go for a run if my to-do-list for the week is crazy because it feels so overwhelming to “have to” squeeze in yet another activity – and then feel bad about it since I know how it would help me feel more balanced.
Looks like a lot of fun….but I’d hate breath in that stuff! That tunnel looks scary!
My husband and I are doing The Color Run in Des Moines, Iowa, at the begining of October. I’m super pumped!! It looks like a riot!
I’m doing The Color Run in DM, too!
Haha this seems like such a fun race idea! Maybe if we had something like this up by me, I would start running (probably not, but I can dream, right?)!!
I did Color Me Rad in Oklahoma City 2 weeks ago! It was a blast and I only had to wash my hair 3 times to get all of the color out :) Brittany totally should have won, Danielle could never even finish a room!
I did the one in OKC 2 weeks ago too!! The guys with the green sprayers really got me, my entire side looked like the hulk! It took FOREVER to scrub off!
I always love seeing pics from these. Looks like you had a blast.
We had one in our area not too long ago and our car unknowingly participated driving through a green cloud on the freeway since they were slinging it on bridge. The Mr was less than amused.
I’ve got the Color Run in Indianapolis to look forward to this weekend, and have already signed up for Color Me Rad in September! Maybe I can get a friend to bring a canvas. what a great way to remember the day.
I noticed it was raining that morning here in Richmond, I was wondering how that would affect all that color! I saw a girl at Kroger right after and it looked a little runny/muted. Glad you had fun! Maybe I’ll sign up next year.
OMG – John I totally thought of Game of Thrones when I saw the mustache picture!!! Seriously I was thinking I was watching that show too much!
Awesome art work, Sherry and you should sign it as an orginal and date it!
I wish ABQ had a fun race like that!
This Saturday I’m doing The Color Run…my first 5K! Eek!
I am doing the Color Run this Saturday too! Also my first 5k! What city? I will send you some good vibes.
I did the Richmond Color Me Rad race with my best friend, Abigayle! She actually has a picture of the kids rolling in the pink once we were close to the finish: https://fbcdn-photos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/418640_10100682868083759_386298307_a.jpg
Blue is the hardest to remove…I’m still finding it in my car. But, to anyone running, I recommend wearing a bandana or buff over your face so you don’t breathe/swallow the powder.
Haha! Katherine is one of my good friends and she texted me about meeting you guys right after it happened! I was totally jealous! Guess that’s what I get for not running ;)
Aw, she was so sweet! Wish we could have met you too! Next time!

That’s awesome! Love the canvas.
I was hoping you guys would comment on design star this year! Hilari was my favorite as well and I was sorry to see her go home. I hope HGTV sees her potential and she’ll get her own show anyway! Danielle and Brittany are talented designers, but Hilari has the personality for TV!
Amen! I just think she’s made for TV. I wonder where she’ll end up… somewhere great I’d imagine!

When I saw that white canvas, I thought Sherry would let John hold it while running to capture the random splashes along the way!
Yeah we thought about that but the idea of carrying a canvas throughout the race for John was kind of a burden, so I was happy to be on canvas/Clara duty while John ran!
xo,
s
This looks like too much fun! Just wondering, do you run as well, Sherry?
Glad to see the Game of Thrones reference, I’m kind of hooked to the show and the books. And I must say you DO look like Littlefinger right there :)
Oh no, I’m in charge of cheering with Clara and John’s parents. Haha. I like to say that I only run when I’m being chased (but sadly that’s not true anymore, because lately I have been running after Clara a lot- haha).
xo,
s
Running the one up here in Boston on Sunday. Pretty excited, especially after your re-cap and pics!! Now I just need to find a white t-shirt…
That looks like SO much fun! I love the idea of bringing a canvas for Clara. I have no idea where you guys find the extra time to run, you are always doing something!
Good stuff! I think the photos of you in your shirt are wall-worthy! Just saying. When you post on running/training can you also include some tips on being a supportive partner?! ;-) My husband is starting his training for the Philadelphia marathon next week (he’s already been running to get in shape) and I’m so excited for him, but know he’s going to have ups and downs during the training process. I’m not a runner, so would love to hear your thoughts on that, too. Thanks!
Thanks for the suggestion Deb, I’ll try to work that in. Sherry generally is just really understanding that it’s something I like to do (and it makes me more balanced and happier I think) so she’s supportive if I decide to go for a run in the morning, and I try not to be as much of a burden by bringing Clara with me in the jogging stroller if Sherry has a lot of work to do while I’m gone.
-John
OK, So I was supposed to run in that race with Katherine from the photo (We went to college together (and she is the one who told me about your blog)), but we got our wires crossed and I registered for thecolorrun instead (seriously, two color runs in Richmond?)
I am bummed that I didn’t get to potentially meet you guys!
No way! Here’s hoping we bump into you at some point! I’m sure we will!

thats two girls from my undergrad class that have been recently featured on here (also erin’s kitchen make over a few weeks back). grovers represent!
Haha, so funny!
xo,

They just had on in the Boston area – and my sister did not want to do that as part of her bachlorette party, oh well. I’m totally down for that cookie run – let me know when and where!
Haha, seriously, someone needs to get on that!
xo,
s
I’m so excited that you guys did this! My hubbs and I did the Color Run in Dallas back in March, and Color Me Rad is coming here in a month or so. We are so excited to run again!
Our souvenir happened to be on our shoes… they were perfectly sprinkled with bits of the rainbow (and wont come off!)so thats a great & unexpected momento :)
So cute!

I’m doing the Color Run on Saturday in Boston! Thank you so much for posting this, Im now even more excited!
Great idea about the canvas, may bring some for my little ones to use at the race. Thanks!
Are either of you participating in The Color Run in Richmond on September 15? Do you have any hotel/sightseeing recommendations for out-of-towners?
We’re not sure we can do that one since the book comes out this fall and we have tour stuff starting in Sept/Oct/Nov, but if any other locals are doing it or have hotel recommendations for Erin that would be great! We also have a post about a bunch of favorite sightseeing things in Richmond here for ya.

I did the Richmond run Saturday as well!! It was awesome!! I found that the hardest crevices to get the color out were my ears and my armpits (tmi?)
Overall it was a complete blast and I am so glad I decided to do it!
totally just did the color run in ypsilanti last weekend with a bunch of friends! i’m still trying to get the pink out of my hair, but it was so worth it!! my new year’s resolution was to run an actual 5k, and this was a perfect race to try first. i’d highly recommend it to anyone! so. much. fun. !!!!!! :)
Ooh, so did I! Left the color in for the fun of it (it helped also to celebrate my bday! heh)
I’m still in the run/walk phase of my Couch to 5K program so that’s how I approached this day. So fun, so so messy! I wonder if Color Me Rad is coming to our area?
that looks like so much fun! good for you!
about design star… i wish Brittany would’ve won. i love her style and she’s been a strong contestant all along. oh well…
I so wanted to do this while it was in CA, but my husband had some serious hesitations about paying to run in a race and have people throw things at us – I am going to show him this post and hopefully it will change his mind!!
I am doing this next year I am still getting in shape to run at all. I had friends that did it this year and they said the same about the blue being the hardest to get out. This looks like so much fun, and love the matching tattoos heehee!
looks like you had a blast! i wanted to run the Color Run here in Kansas City, but completely missed it! i watched Design Star and totally thought Britny should have won, love her and i think her show would have been awesome!!! who doesnt want to learn how to better incorporate family photos, etc into their own houses?
I was totally rooting for Brittany all through Design Star because she and I share the same Old Hollywood Regency style, but I ended up liking Danielle’s pilot a lot more in the end and will definitely be watching her show (who doesn’t like shopping?) But oh how dearly I loved Hilari…I still crack up at “You wanna know the first time I went in a yurt was? Yesterday. You know when the second time I went in a yurt was? Also yesterday.”
Hahaha- FAVORITE QUOTE FROM THE ENTIRE SHOW. John and I laughed for ten minutes and now I say it randomly (while typing, pouring a bowl of cereal, whatever).
xo,
s
Yes, I loved that quote! And when Hilari was in the middle of a camera challenge and her carpenter tripped and broke the bed that they had spent all morning assembling… she must have felt like screaming but she just rolled with it. She is way entertaining.
I was totally rooting for Danielle in the finale, though… her pilot was so fun to watch.
Oh, I’d love a run like this to happen here. I don’t like running very much, but this looks like fun!
Would the run have taken place in pouring rain? Do you know? Just curious.
We heard it would have gone on in rain, but they would call it if there was thunder/lightning. Thankfully it was dry the entire race and only started to drizzle on our walk to the car.

I just did the Color Run in Ann Arbor this past Sunday. It. Was. AMAZING!
I found pink to be the hardest color to remove… I still have traces on my face and along my hairline. And probably TMI, but my pits may or may not still have a little pink on them too. :D
I’m doing the Color Run in DC in October… so looking forward to it! Looks like you guys had a great time :)
My husband started training for a 5K after a bunch of our friends signed up for a Zombie 5K (Run For Your Lives). That’s more like a mudder, and completely intimidating. I did just start the couch to 5K program, and I gotta tell you, a Color Run could very well be in my future! Thanks for posting the fun photos – I’ll add it to my inspirations.
I LOVE Couch to 5k! I just finished week 5 this morning and I think I’m going to register for a color run as my graduation 5k. Good Luck! The Couch to 5k facebook page is a great spot for support
The color runs are inspired by the Hindu festival Holi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holi
Sounds fun!
So fun!

glad i’m not the only one who was thinking that! i’ve never been to india, but always thought that holi looks awesome. had no idea there were these runs in the u.s. (but i am sooo not a runner).
I’ve done Holi in India. It’s crazy for sure. And you will get a lot of it in your eyes and mouth. And in India they throw colored water at each other too. It gets pretty gross after a while. Still a lot of fun though!
My thoughts exactly. Holi looks amazing: http://pinterest.com/pin/274015958547820933/
Beautiful!

I saw these pictures and had soooo many memories rushing back to me of this indian “Holi” day. Great fun. I will be doing the color run here in Houston in November. CAN.NOT.WAIT!!!!
So Cool! My girlfriends and I are doing the Color Run in November (it’s here in Houston), and we’re so looking forward to it!
I agree with John…I think the shirt should be framed! It would look A-to the-WESOME!
I was there and I saw you guys!!!!!!! I wanted to meet you so bad, but my friends told me I was being a dork. Sigh…. still kicking myself.
Color Me Rad was SO much fun, but I’m bummed my shirt didn’t stay pretty.
Aw, man – we would have loved to meet you! Next time.

I am doing the Color Run-Charlotte in November! I am so excited and your pictures make me even more excited. Sad about the t-shirt though because I totally wanted to save mine as a memento too. Looks like it was a blast. And way to go Sherry for the splatter artwork it looks awesome.
I was so bummed that Britany didn’t win :( I loved her style! I felt like her photography angle was fresh as well. I’ll watch Danielle’s show and hope for the best!
Loved this season of Design Star because I thought any of the top 5 could have had great shows. I hope Mickel becomes one of the regulars on Danielle’s show. I really liked Brittany though too so I was sad for her – she seemed like the front-runner from almost the beginning.
The run looks like a blast. Love the “painting”! :)
I was totally bummed that Hilari got eliminated before the final. And while I agree that Danielle had a great show tape, she gets so stressed and struggles to finish everything she starts. How often does she say “I’m panicking” or “I’m starting to freak out”!? I thought Brittany’s rooms looked better.
In Canada we have the Big Bike ride to raise money for Heart & Stroke research. My husband and I participated this year. Not quite as messy as a colour run, but it was a lot of fun.
You ride on a specially-designed 30-seat bike. We rode up and down the main street of our town waving tambourines and blasting rock music. And riding – HARD – especially going uphill. Those bikes are heavy! Traffic was stopped; people were waving and honking their horns like crazy. And our team raised over $2,000 for research. I can’t wait to do it again next year!

I am so excited about a running post! Please include your post race rest/training thoughts if you have some, that is always where I falter after longer races.
I think the right person won Design Star because Danielle has more ability to be varied in her design than Britney. I love Britney’s designs and think she would have been a great host as well, but I think some of hers (though probably not the yurt) are more of a mirror of what we see in design mags right now, rather than Danielle’s, which pull from a more broad base of inspiration.
I love that the pattern on the front of your shirt looks like a fireworks display…well, before the rain at least. Awesome experience I’m sure! Looking forward to a running post!
I’m running the Color Run this weekend in Louisville! I’m really excited, and I’m also looking forward to John’s post on training and running! Thanks for the tips on how to get the color off…so far my game plan is to do my best and hide from our patrons if I’m still sporting color at work on Monday.
So glad so many folks are into the running post idea! I will try my darndest to write it up in the next week or two.
-John
Ah! Littlefinger! So Obsessed.
I missed the Dallas color run (it was in February since it’s so hot here in the summer) but you can bet we’ll be doing it this time around! Way to go!
I did the Santa Hustle in Chicago last year (everyone dresses up as Santa and it’s awesome) and they did hand out cookies at one of the stops! I was so excited about it I literally talked about the cookies the entire race until we got to the cookie stop, and then they turned out to be awful! Not the cookies themselves, the act of attempting to eat a cookie while running – for risk of TMI, the lack of saliva in my mouth at that point did not make for a good cookie-eating experience. I’d still definitely do the race again – and probably eat the cookies again!
Haha, that. is. hilarious. Thanks for the description! Although it kills our cookie race concept completely. Haha. Maybe it’ll need to be a slow liesurely cookie walk…
