Blogiversary IV: You Time
We’ve blabbed on (and on) about ourselves this week, so we wanted to take a moment (as we usually do during these blogiversary weeks) to focus on you… and your feelings. Okay, not so much your feelings. Unless, um, you want to talk about them.
But seriously, you know so much about us, so we’d love to learn a bit about you (and no, this isn’t some not-so-cleverly disguised marketing research survey – it’s just us being nosy and wondering who the heck you fine people are). So just like last year, I’m breaking out our little polling plug-in to let you guys weigh in about yourselves. And just as you have in past years, feel free to expand on any answer in the comment section – or just use it to share something random (favorite food?), link to your blog, or tell us something else about yourself that you think we should know (anyone sporting a soda shirt?).
Darn, our polling plug-in isn’t playing nice right now (aka: it crashed our site four times in a row) so we spontaneously moved the poll party over to Facebook. Here’s that link for ya. Don’t forget after you submit your poll to: 1) scroll up and 2) click the “view results” button at the top of the page (to see where you fall into the mix). It’s so interesting for us to learn more about you guys! Oh and ignore the big ugly ad at the top of the poll, this was one of those ahh-we’re-crashing-and-need-another-quick-alternative kind of decisions.

UPDATE: Now that it has been a couple of days, a few people suggested that we post the results of the Facebook survey for all to see back here (remember it’s not really a perfect representation of all of our readers because 5,000 people took the poll, but many others commented with their stats instead – and I’m sure a fair amount stayed silent altogether):
- AGE: 63% are twenty-somethings, 29% are thirty-somethings, 4% are forty-somethings, 1% are fifty-plus and 1% are teens
- GENDER: 99% are women, 1% are men (are the guys just being quiz-shy or something?)
- LOCATION: 87% live in the USA, 5% in Canada, 4% in Europe, 2% in Australia, and 1% in Asia
- HOME: 61% own their home, 31% rent, 6% live with parents, and 1% live at school
- OTHER: A majority of readers are married, have pets, and a winning smile (these percentages were off because Facebook tallied it out of total answers to the question, not total respondents)
- FAV AFTERNOON ACTIVITY: In order of popularity (most to least): fun family outing, reading blogs, doing small craft, shopping, working on big makover, watching design shows, decorating for a party, and last but not least: going to open houses.
- REALITY SHOW: In order of popularity (most to least): Amazing Race, Design Star, Top Chef, America’s Next Top Model, American Idol, Jersey Shore, Cops (yes, 166 people would like to be on Cops).

You guys are seriously my first stop when I make my morning rounds! Your dedicationg to getting posts up everyday by a certain time is what keeps me coming back. A lot of blogs out there fail to keep up their end of the bargain (I know, life happens), including myself *sigh. But I’m trying. Anyway, the deeets..
I live in LA (born and raised here), I’m 27 years old and live with my boyfriend, my mom and our two pups (a 1 year old chihuahua named Billie I’m trying to hook up with Burger *wink wink* and a 2 year old Pitbull/Jack Russell mix named Baby Jake). We live in what, after some research, seems to be a Sears Catalog home built in 1923 in the hills on the outskirts of the city. Seriously, you can’t even tell you’re LA when you look out from our yard. Trees as far as the eye can see! We have a lease with the option to buy (which we’ll be getting on next year hopefully). As far as a reality show? None please, I’m pretty sure I do a lot of embarrassing things I’m not aware of on a constant basis, don’t need them being blogged about by OTHER people lol!

Hi! I just started reading your blog a few months ago and recently started blogging myself to document our journey to adopt. While at first my favorite posts were all of the DIY projects (and I still love them), because of our 5 week old daughter I’m becoming more and more interested in the Clara posts and your BabyCenter articles. So, YoungHouseLife=Love :) Glad I stumbled across your blog… not even sure exactly how I got here!
I love your site. You make it seem like the projects you take on are totally do-able. Unfortunately, we have 3 kids (5,3.5, and 6 months) and my husband is in grad school while working full time, so all home improvement projects except the bare necessities have to wait a while. But I keep looking around for ideas.
As an aside, I had to laugh when you said Clara weighed 21 lbs on your By the Numbers post. Our 6 month old weighs in at 20 lbs and she’s the smallest one yet. Oh what I wouldn’t do for a nice portable baby that doesn’t kill my back!
Haha, it’s so funny because she’s always so high on the height chart and pretty low on the weight chart (around 15%). My string bean!

I’m 28 and live in my newly purchased first home in the Chicago area. I live with my husband, 5 month old son Beckett and two kitties. If I could be on a reality show it would definitely have to be the Real Housewives of New Jersey. I love those women! I don’t think I’d make the cut, though, since I’m a Midwestern, blonde, Irish girl with the least amount of hair volume possible :)
To tide me over before answering your survey, thought I’d answer your suggested questions. I live in upstate New York, currently, with 3 cats (only had one when I answered last year, ha!) and a husband (he was my fiance at that point, too!). We’re working on our first fixer-upper. I’m 29, although if you asked me to answer that immediately I’d have to think…am I 29? Seriously?

I love that you guys are sharing a more personal side to us, and are interested in finding out who we are! I’m a young 20-something living just outside DC. Actually, the project you all did on Carrie’s room makeover (you know, the one that was actually a sunroom) is what inspired me to move into my current apartment because…it’s the same room! I was terrified by the small and awkward space but once I saw your post I knew I could schmancy it up. After a solid year there, it’s time to upgrade to a room with four walls. Definitely will be browsing through your inspiration boards for decorating ideas!
Hey John, Sherry, Clara, and Burger! I live in Oceanside, CA, with my husband, Justin, and our three year old Golden Retriever, Olive. We are currently renting a house, so home improvement projects aren’t that intense around here, but we did put in a garden and I’ve been updating current things we have and also creating new decorative pieces using inspiration from Pinterest. The reality show I’d most like to be on is American Pickers — it’s on The History Channel and I just love Frank and Mike. Plus, getting to root around in people’s barns and attics for rusty treasure seems like such an adventure! I’d like to let you know that if you’re ever hankering to come to the “best” coast, we have a spare room and bathroom. :) Thanks for sharing your lives on your blog, I check this sucker every day and I love it!

I read your blog every week and am always inspired to go create something or tweek something or even start my own blog about life. Anyway, keep up the great work!
I’m usually just a reader, not a commenter (except I did comment to enter the contest for the West Elm giftcard, because DUH), but since the poll isn’t working, I figured I finished my answers the old fashioned way. I already answered where I live and how old I am, so I’ll just continue with the one I was on when it crashed.
I have a boyfriend, but we spend a lot of time at each other’s places, so it’s almost like we live together, and I am helping him redecorate his living room. And I consider him my spouse to be, even though nothing will be official until we both get jobs (recent law school grads…). I also live with my chihuahua-corgi mix, who looks like a fox. I call him Mulder (yes, from The X-Files).
I rent from a landlord, but I might be moving home with my parents for a couple months, since they live 20 minutes away and as of yet, I do not have a job. That should be EXTREMELY temporary though. EXTREMELY.
If I had to pick a reality show (I don’t really watch reality), I would want to be on The Amazing Race with my dad, because we are both good travelers and game for anything, but we’re also stubborn enough to create drama for the cameras. But I would really like to do an HHTV show with the boyfriend-slash-future-spouse once we’re married and shopping for a new house or re-doing our new house.

Y’all have given me so much inspiration for my new space, and I genuinely love how detail-oriented things are on YHL. It’s right up my alley!
In my spare, spare, spare time, I’m a huge fan and advocate of the YouTube beauty community. I actually have my own channel (link is connected to my name in case you’re interested, Sherry! or John… or Clara… or Burger…) but it’s strictly a hobby right now. I’d love to have a corresponding blog one day!

•how old you are: old enough to be your mother; be nice to us old folks.
•who you live with (better half, kids, pups, imaginary friends?): my better half of 35 years; that’s it for now. maybe a dog/cat in the future. Maybe some of the fledgings will fly back next year.
•if you own/rent/live in dorms/live with rents, etc: I think what you’re trying to ask is if I own my house. Yes.
•what reality show you’d like to be on (Design Star? Project Runway? Jersey Shore?): actually . .none. Reality shows are like motorcycles and tattoos. I can’t stop looking, but I’m terrified of them.
•and pretty much anything else about yourself that you think we should know: Just because i’m old enough to be your mom doesn’t mean i’m totally uncool. My life experience is different, that’s all. I am a newborn nursery nurse, and I’m sure my interests are different from yours just based on that. I admire youse guys (yes, Texans can say “youse guys”) for your energy and look forward every day to see what you’ve posted. More than any other blog I read. And I read a lot of ‘em.

I am 31, live with my family (hubby, 1 son, 2 daughters, 1 dog and 2 cats) in Virginia Beach! (We are practically neighbors-not really).
We are currently renting a 4 bedroom house in an awesome neighborhood, while we dream and plan about how to own our first home. I love getting creative in decorating and creating storage in our rental.
Reality Show- hmmmmm, not sure, I would love to be on a biggest Loser type thing (I am not that overweight). I would just love to have a team of people helping me get fit and healthy, it would be great!
