Gallery Opening
Dude. Remember last fall when we created a separate little site just for browsing mood boards and mentioned that we wanted to create one full of actual photos from house crashings and reader redesigns (where you could search by color or room)? Well, after a few more midnight coding tantrums and accidental hunger strikes we’ve (finally) done it. It’s a big ol’ gallery full of real rooms for your viewing pleasure. And you can access them anytime by clicking the “Room Gallery” tab under our header. Sidenote: I’ve always wanted to start a post with dude. Mission accomplished.
This new “Inspiration Gallery” follows the same basic format as the existing Mood Board Gallery, only these are actual photos of rooms that might come in handy when you’re looking for ideas for your casa (you know, as opposed to boards full of furnishings and accessories). We’ve uploaded pics from over thirty House Crashing adventures as well as some of our solved Design Dilemmas (which gives you over 340 pictures to peruse) and we plan to beef things up over the next few weeks by adding images from all of our previous Reader Redesigns too. You know, once I can see straight again.
Things are tagged by color and room (just like in our mood board gallery) which means you can search by room or by color scheme if you’d like. So if you’re jonesing for blue rooms or only want to browse kitchens, you can indicate that on the main page or the sidebar to hone in on what you want. Oh and to find out more about each room and see a close up, just click on the thumbnail. As always, it’s nothing fancy since our coding philosophy is just like our home improvement one (learn as you go). So please pardon any glitches or less than perfect searching capabilities and let us know if you find any broken links or typos.
We’ve also added a fun little rating feature. So if you’ve got the warm fuzzies for a particular pic, show it some love by clicking the heart icon below it on the photo detail page. It won’t put that room into a “favorites folder” or anything (in order to code that people would have to sign in, which is beyond our skill level and not everyone likes logging in anyway) but the rooms getting the most love will show up on the sidebar under the “Most Loved Rooms” title – which means everyone will have quick access to whichever rooms the crowd is finding to be the most inspirational. And they’ll constantly change as people continue to explore and weigh in, so that should be kinda fun.
So feel free to poke around and make yourself at home in our new digs (which will just keep growing as we continue to add photos). It’s definitely somewhere I expect to find Sherry all the time (we don’t get out of the house much). Can’t wait to see which rooms pop up as favorites.

alot of effort, but totally worth it! your blog rocks!
Just wanted to let you know, I was browsing the bedrooms, and found a (beautiful but lost) bathroom link among the bedrooms. This is the little guy that popped up: http://gallery.younghouselove.com/2011/07/inspired-inexpensive-half-bathroom/
Thanks so much! All fixed.

love this new feature!! and the late night
tantrums and hunger strikes (;
i wish i could figure how to do A mood board..you’re a million mood boards ahead of me (;
Oh my lovely, thanks!
Love this new feature! Just fyi- if you click on a picture and want to navigate from photo to photo, “next picture” and “previous picture” are reversed.
“next space” “previous space” i mean. :)
So sorry- that’s the way that program does it- totally feels backwards though. Maybe we’ll figure out how to reverse that. Off to bat my eyelashes at John the code-master. Haha.

oh wow. i agree, it IS like pinterest for your website. oh so fun.
Awesome. I was sort of hoping for something like this without even knowing it. Our tiny condo has been both “finished” and much too small for some time and we finally sold it. So now I can really focus attention on “house dreaming” and this will be perfect. I hope the spaces in your 1st and 2nd houses will be included.
One thing I noticed on my wide screen laptop, I had to scroll down to hit the “next” button and I really, really hate that. Once you can “see straight” again maybe you could try moving that up to just below the images.
Oh, I just clicked on an image and found out it takes you to the blog post about it. Wonderful!!
Thanks for the feedback about moving those previous and next buttons! We’d love to figure that out when John recovers from his coding hangover!

You guys are so awesome and organized. Yet another great thing on my favorite blog ever!
The link to view the last image in the gray gallery – a kitchen – is broken. Whoops message :) Nice work on the gallery!
Thanks for catching that! It’s working now.

This new feature is great! I’ve enjoyed playing with it and seeking color palette inspiration because (gasp) we’ve lived in this home officially for two years and have Dover White paint in every. single. room. Still! I’m not an experienced painter and my husband is but really doesn’t enjoy it. Thus, white pervades.
Anyway, I wanted to say that this new feature reminded me that I really needed to check out Pinterest, so I looked back on Sherry’s love letter to it to find out more. :) I signed up, yada yada yada, and it then recommended some people to follow based on my interests. Guess who it selected?! YOU!!! I was so excited at the serendipity of that (since I’ve been reading your blog regularly for two years) then ended up feeling creeped out the the potential of Big Brother out there pulling info from my history or something! Eek! How did they know?! Or have you gained that much popularity that you rose to the top in the “DIY and Crafts” category? In any case, Pinterest pegged me right–or now that I’m a Pinterest novice I should say “pinned.”
Delighted to explore this new tool and thankful for your creative, fun, and photo-filled blog.
Thanks!
Leslie
What a funny and amazing coincidence. Love it. Happy pinning!

I’m impressed. Just another great feature you guys have created.
Now it is a tough competition between YHL & Pinterest as to which site I’ll spend the most time on and distract me from getting work and housework done.
This isn’t related with the post, but I have just found the 2012 IKEA catalog online here: http://onlinecatalog.ikea-usa.com/US/en/2012/IKEA_Catalog/
Wahoo! Thanks so much for sharing Irene! We’ll have to spread the word! It’s beefy this year!

Fantastic, really love this! Great resource for cool ideas. Can you also add Craft Rooms and Laundry Rooms to your Room Gallery?
We’d love to add more of those, but right now the categories are sort of dependent on the types of rooms we’ve crashed – and so far we’ve only got two laundry rooms (here and here) which are categorized with Bathrooms for the time being. Once we’ve got a few more to justify their own category we’ll definitely add that as an option. Oh, and here a link to our only craft room so far (categorized under Office for now): http://gallery.younghouselove.com/2010/09/a-brilliant-bungalow-craft-room/

This is amaz-balls! Well done you guys :D
Awesomeness. Looking forward to perusing the gallery :)
GREAT FEATURE!!! Thanks for adding :o)
i agree with many of the previous comments that this is just another excellent excuse to sit in my cubicle and not do any actual work!
i also saw a lot of mentions about craft rooms/offices. here’s one of my fave craft rooms…(and pretty much everything else ‘little miss momma’ does is awesome!) http://www.littlemissmomma.com/2011/07/whimsical-craft-room-decor.html
i wish i had oodles of spare time so i could recreate all of her jewelry/accessories…and all of your tutorials too!!! now that i’m browsing through your galleries, my to-do list and wish lists are growing by the second and nothing is getting checked off! :)
So charming!!! I’m in love.

Love it!!
Love this!
You guys are in my regular ‘rotation’ of sites that I read everyday. I truly look forward to your posts.
I have a question though–I just can’t figure out how you guys do it all!! Do you sleep??
As a working mother to an 11 month old I constantly feel like I never get anything I want done as far as projects around the house go. I have to say that I’m pretty organized too! We manage to feed the kiddo, play with him, laundry, dinner, tend to the dog and cat etc. but it took forever just to redo our kitchen.
I would love to see your play by play breakdown of your day—you know—who does what when–basically what is your day is like?
I think the key is really the fact that there are two of us- so we can switch off with Clara. And we do nearly every project when she’s napping or asleep for the night at 7:15. So we don’t work the normal 9-5 hours (more like 7-midnight with a lot of baby interruptions in between, haha) but it somehow works! We’d love to do one of those average day breakdown posts – maybe for our upcoming blogiversary!

I’m excited about this as we are in the process of buying a new (to us) place!:) Thanks for all the posts you put up on here!!!:) Probably spend too much time here lol :)
Love this idea!! One suggestion — Exteriors!! I need some brilliant exterior color ideas for my three dormer home!!
We actually have an Exterior section (hidden among all those other links). Here ya go: http://gallery.younghouselove.com/category/exterior/

Thank you!!! Love all of your ideas!!
Sherry and John-
This looks great! I’m so excited for the new room boards. Just a quick question- is there (maybe in the far off future) any way to search by TWO COLORS!??! For example, I have an olive green couch, and I’m looking for possibly pale pink accents- it would be great to pick a primary and secondary color if possible.
Thanks! Keep up the good work!
We’d love to add that capability someday but it’s a bit above my skill level for now! Someday hopefully!
-John
LOVE IT! Just what I need, another beautiful tool for procrastination! :-D
I would love to see some pictures from the evolution of rooms in YOUR homes included in the gallery, in addition to house crashes, etc!
So… this means you’ll be inviting all of us over for a “Gallery Opening” evening, right? Complete with cheese and wine? Yes? Okay, see you there.
-Carly(http://www.createliveblog.com)
Of course! We’ll all pile into the laundry room and see how many people I can fit in there once and for all.

Hey guys! I’ve been following your blog for probably 4 years now, and I love that you guys have added a Room Gallery–my ability to focus as I work from home is reaallly going to be tested now! Quick suggestion, John: (though it may not be a quick fix) can you move the “Previous” and “Next” buttons to be right underneath the picture. As it is now, I view the pic, have to scroll down a bit to hit Next, and then scroll back up to see the next picture (do I sound lazy, lol). Also, when I’m in the Kitchens section, for example, when I hit Next, it doesn’t always bring me to the next kitchen pic as one would expect; it sometimes takes me to a foyer picture, for instance. (It might be “nexting” off of the color combinations in the room or something). If you can fix these, that’d be awesome! (I know you’ve probably got more pressing (and fun) things to do like playing with your precious bean or taking Burger for a walk, haha. And I’m a coder too, so these may be much easier said than done, but thought I’d leave a post! Oh, and sorry if somebody already commented on this before). Love you guys!
Thanks so much for the suggestions! We’re definitely working out some glitches (one being that the next button seems to search at random and never goes to the next image- no idea why!). As for moving those buttons up, we were having some serious freezing and crashing issues but it’s on our list for sure!
