I Get By With A Little Help From My Scans
Welcome to my brain. Here are some tear sheets from magazines and catalogs that have been bouncing around in my head lately. When it comes to brainstorming the new vibe for our new house, I love sifting through tons of ideas (online, in mags, in catalogs, in stores, in our friends’ houses, in houses we’ve crashed, and even in my favorite TV shows and movies) to see what gets me going and then adapting the most inspiring ideas for our home (see other ideas for pinning down your style here). You know I’m all about soaking things up like a sponge, right? I actually love this part of the process. It’s so fun and full of anticipation and possibility.
First there’s this happy and bright image from House Beautiful. I love the art, the pillows, and the pops of clementine and aqua.

Then there’s this beauty from Cottage Living. I love the breezy indoor/outdoor feeling and the white beamed ceiling with the dark floors.

This room’s patterned rug, colorful pillows, and sculptural light fixture make me smile (also from House Beautiful).

Here I liked the idea of interior doors that aren’t white (this pic’s also from House Beautiful). Maybe I’ll go with a smoky slate color like the ones in this picture?

Here’s another House Beautiful image with a shot of bold color on the walls (can you tell I went through my big stack of them on the side table in the den?). I’m digging deep teals and peacock blues in a major way. Who knows if I’ll have the guts to put something like that on the wall, but I’d definitely paint a piece of furniture that color…

I’ve also mentioned that I want to move away from breezy white curtains and go for shots of color, pattern, and texture when it comes to drapes (which I plan to DIY using this method). These simple greeny-yellow panels add so much fun to this white kitchen from Better Homes & Gardens. And everyone knows I’m dying to build an island for our new kitch, and this one is pretty sweet with those chunky legs and some storage on the side.

This sheet was actually torn from a West Elm catalog. I love that luxe geometric wallpaper – it just adds so much texture without feeling too feminine and flouncy (which is usually what the word wallpaper evokes to me). Plus John digs it too, which is obviously a large step in the making-it-happen process.

This white kitchen is anything but bland thanks to the fun patterned pendant and fabric on the stools (from Real Simple). And you know I love a white kitchen…

Here are more pops of color thanks to yet another House Beautiful scan. The plush striped headboard with those fun ottomans is so sweet for a guest room. And I think I would layer in another color for more excitement (just in a pillow on the bed and some art) like the first and the third scan above.

So those are the things that are marinating in my head these days. Who knows where the heck we’ll end up. Speaking of we, John and I have a “full agreement” agreement. Which basically means we agree that we both have to agree on everything that we do in our house or we don’t do it. It sounds kind of difficult but it’s not. It’s sort of like a built-in extra “qualification” to make sure we really love something and it’s worth the time/money/effort (so we don’t buy or do something we’re only feeling “meh” about). And it keeps us from feeling any resentment like “ugh, I hate that chair that John made me buy” which bodes well for future agreements and keeps things copacetic when it comes to both of us feeling at home in our home. After a few years of house sprucing we have a pretty good idea about what our better half likes or doesn’t like (for example, John hates microsuede because he thinks it leaves marks of peoples butts in it) so there aren’t too many fights over new pieces or paint colors since we’re both usually on the same page after a few years of practice.
Anyway back to the scans. Do you have any favorites among the group? Anyone else digging pops of color, painted doors, bold curtains, and wallpapered or saturated walls?
Psst- For more on the agreeing-with-your-better-half topic, check out this post on the subject.

Summer, please come back! It’s dark and rainy here in Boston, but your photos remind me of light, airy, easy summertime.
Those are all great ideas. I am in love with the orange/white/sage pillows. Wonder if I can recreate a similar print.
The dark turquoise color is my favorite; so very clean with all of the white upholstery. I can easily imagine a set of dark, antique chairs for that breakfast nook table…
I absolutely love the striped headboard in the last pic..and those ottomans are great. I’ve been wearing a lot of those citrus-y colors lately, so it would make sense that I’m drawn to that room. Kind of reminds me of that old show with Thom Filicia (sp?) where he’d make them pick 3 personal items and 3 clothing items and then design the room around those. I loved that show! He is amazing.
Sherry, Have you heard of a site called pinterest.com? It seems like it would be great for you! It’s a site where you can keep online notebooks-of-sorts filled with images that you love. So you can have a “kitchen” notebook, or a “furniture” notebook, etc. And it’s not limited to house stuff. It’s a great place to store and find inspiration. Just thought you might want to check it out!
Hey Liz,
We have heard about it and can’t wait to check it out! Thanks for the heads up!

ooh!!! the first, third and fifth are my favorites :D such personality!! I’m a big fan of colors that pop without necessarily being too bright so those 3 stood out right away!! I look forward to seeing your new house and the projects it will bring :)
I love that Cottage Living image of the indoor/outdoor flow with the light ceilings and dark floors…. so summery :)
I too have to agree with John about the butt prints on the microsuede…. we have a microsuede lounge and every time I get up I am smoothing over a seemingly ENORMOUS imprint :\
I love, love, LOVE that trojan horse-type fruit bowl in the green pendant pic!
It’s embarassing how desperately I look forward to your new design plans!
Thanks for sharing what’s on your brain. Love to hear the whats and whys you like things in gorgeous pictures like these!
I read through all of the comments to see if I was the first person to openly notice the white horse in the white kitchen. Yes, technically, it was a fruit bowl but it still made me giggle. When West Elm came out with all of their holiday items & I saw all of the animals it reminded me of the animals in your current collection.
i love all these pics, they are definitely being added to my folder of inspiration!
thank you x

Wow, so many of these are my own favorite tear sheets. Esp. the top one, the teal wall, and the J. Adler green kitchen. So hard to pick, so many great colors!
Oh! Memories..3yrs ago I had a very simillar 3D star pendant light (like the House Beautiful pic) on hold in my name at a local retail store. It was going to be used on my brand new 50m2 deck. I needed 2 & was desperately doing the rounds of all their other stores for a match. To no avail, they had been discontinued. I sadly had to let it go….Seeing your scan, I still love it!
Now Sherry, I cannot believe you let this entire post past without nary a comment on the crazy WHITE CERAMIC Trojan Horse fruit bowl thingy in the second to last photo! Right up your alley…or maybe not. ;)
I was backtracking, and am I the only one who *kinda* liked that crazy divider that used to be in your living room? Painted deep brown or black -like a little West Elm-y display thing-ma-bob? I do agree that it’s nice to open up the space, and putting tchotchkes on that thing would have closed your entry way off.
PS:I lurve your video for Clara -we’ll have to do the same when we have a little one come along -(s)he will never remember our tiny condo! I love watching my husband’s baby movies set in my in-laws little townhouse just a stone’s throw away from where we live now.
Haha, you guys know I love ceramic friends! I thought that was so obvious I guess I forgot to actually mention it!

Truly love the 2nd pic! The dark floors are on my dream sheet aa is the light and bright feeling of the room in general (which makes the floors pop even more.) Also like the green curtains in the 6th pic. And, I have a strong feeling I would love the rest of the kitchen if I saw it. Hopefully we will be house hunting in Bon Air next year so my dream sheets are getting more action these days :)
Seeing the part about the wallpaper made me want to comment. Here in the UK pretty much everyone papers their walls unless you have a brand new freshly plastered house – in fact the only walls in our house that aren’t papered are in the bathroom – but it doesn’t seem to be such a big thing in the US, juding by your and other blogs. Is there a reason for this like levels of humidity in houses or more use of aircon etc which would damage the wallpaper, or do you think it’s more of a cultural difference?
We’ve heard that! As for why, we’re not sure- but a lot of people do paper their walls here (well, maybe not a lot, but there’s a definite percentage of people with wallpaper up) so I don’t think the weather or air conditioning have anything to do with damaging the paper since so many people enjoy theirs for decades. We’d guess it’s probably a cultural thing!

I love the idea of richly painted doors. Fortunately, I am married to a painter, so that’s a possibility for us! I can imagine a very textured faux finish…
These colors are pretty… but they look cold.. and unkid-friendly.. I prefer richer colors and textures.. not all smooth and shiny and white. .. just me?
oooh, preeeetttty! i love all of these looks. can’t wait to move to my next house to redecorate. :)
Love your scans….the pops of color are so rejuvenating, and I’m a sucker for the dark floor, white walls look! I’ve been going through my stacks of inspiration as well….we just found a vintage tulip table w/six matching chairs at our local consignment shop!!! Sounds like a dining room redo!
This might be slightly OCD, but wanted to share that I believe the white kitchen w/ lime accents is from Real Simple. I do the same thing, and I tore out the entire article something like “how to decorate with florals”. Either that, or Real Simple and House Beautiful are sharing kitchens – that is one popular kitchen!
Inspired by you guys, we are going to renovate our kitchen in white in the spring, so I am gearing up. Thanks for all the additional inspiration!
Ack – you’re right! Thanks so much for the correction Valerie! Off to fix that…

Oh man, SO MANY awesome ideas! I really love that first one, and anything with yellow gets me happy.
On another note, to feed your addiction to ceramic animals, got any owls? Urban Outfitters has some fun ones:

I feel the last two, spray-painted white, could be awesome (one’s a lantern!) I have the piggy (owly?) bank one shipping to me as we speak… SO EXCITED! Only, I’m going with it in green. Love.
Fun! Thanks so much for the links!

Any idea where I can find those stools in the kitchen picture? I’m moving next week and those would be a great pop of color in my new white kitchen!
We’re not sure. Anyone else have a source on those stools for Kate?

Love the pics! I can’t wait to see how your new house unfolds. Your blog is such a treat to look at while I’m working and need some fun distraction!
Anyhoo, I wanted to share a cool resource that really helps me gather all of my inspiration images on the web… do you guys know about this? You probably do I’m sure, but just in case… it’s an online mood board that lets you capture pics off of the web. When you go under the preferences and choose your web browser you can automatically upload stuff by right clicking an image off the web and it’ll appear in your drop-down menu to upload to your library. It is really one of my favorite things in life!

We’ll have to check it out! Thanks for the tip!

Hi Sherry and John,
I love the pictures. I liked the wallpaper that you have mentioned, since its modern and adds a lot of texture. Do you know of any modern/contemporary wallpaper stores online?
Thanks
Sadaf
PS Congratulations on the new house!!
Yes! Walnutwallpaper.com is awesome. Expensive. But awesome!

the first image is so great that I couldn’t give much attention to the rest.
I keep an inspiration folder too, and seem to have the same love of all different styles as you and John. How would you recommend using pieces of these inspirations so that your house doesn’t end up looking schizophrenic?
(And, do you know where the metal bar stools in image #6 are from? I’ve been drooling over them for months and can’t find them anywhere!)
Hey Blair,
Check out this post for that info: http://www.younghouselove.com/2009/04/email-answers-decorating-add/
As for the stools we don’t know where they’re from. Anyone have a source for Blair?

I love your website- it’s full of great ideas. I love the shape of the mirror you used in your new bathroom. I even picked it up at Lowe’s, but the finish is wrong for my house. I noticed that in this pic of the House Beautiful bold blue color, the mirror on the wall is strikingly similar to the one from Lowe’s. Any sources for the mirror on the wall with the silver/nickel finish?
Thanks,
Tracey
Hey Tracey,
We’re not sure where that’s from, but we bet you could DIY a super similar look using the Lowe’s mirror and some silver leafing supplies from the craft store. You also could try hammered silver spray paint or some other metallic finish. Good luck!

I love all this color! We went with a peacock blue color when painting a set of campaign chests for our living room.
See how they turned out here: http://makingmacy.blogspot.com/2011/01/final-proof-campaign-furniture.html
I love how you used this color in the back of your built-ins!
The quatrefoil mirror from the 5th picture is so similar to the one in your bathroom! I know it probably wasn’t on purpose, but maybe your tear sheets are influencing you more than you think!
Sorry for commening on such an old post, I’m reading backwards from the end!
Isn’t that so funny? Total subliminal decorating ideas I think!
