Holiday Shopping Post Numero Three
Here’s our last installment of our recent gift sleuthing spree (see part one here and part two here) and this time we paid Urban Outfitters a visit. It’s always full of cute, quirky, and downright hilarious gift ideas that are usually pretty affordable. Here’s what we found:
These sparkly pillows were pretty luxe looking (and around $30, as opposed to something similar that we saw at Crate & Barrel for $99).
This $22 book of “Other People’s Love Letters” reminded us of those Post Secret books (we love them, and actually own two volumes of ‘em- they’re great for leaving in a guest room so visitors can entertain themselves).
For the techie in your life, these funny $16 iPhone app refrigerator magnets could be perfect (if not a bit expensive- maybe they’re a good DIY gift idea too?).
This pretty canvas print would definitely work for any newly married couples who just got their first house. So cute. And it might also be DIYable with floral fabric, some fabric paint, and some stencils. I somehow forgot to note the price for this one. Boo.
These sweet $8 mugs had so much charm. And they’re great to give full of any number of things (fancy tea bags or coffee grounds, a bag of cookies or biscotti, even pencils or pens for a work friend’s cubicle).
Of course we had to take a picture of the quirky band aids on the left for Burger. And anything with a mustache joke is cool with us, hence the box on the right. These could make pretty funny stocking stuffers. Sidenote: I just googled mustache to be sure I was spelling it right since the box has that funny spelling that made me second guess my first instinct and look at what came up. Those are some intricate mustache designs…
Here’s a $36 faux chandelier that we thought would be a great gift for a fancy fashionista friend. We can totally picture it hanging above an entryway table, a dining area, or even inside of a cool walk in closet (best of all: no wiring necessary).
And we had to snap a picture of this dude from The Hangover…
… because if John had a goatee and some glasses it might have been a pretty good representation of his “heck-yeah-I’m-wearing-a-baby” fashion choice.
Of course Clara was asleep at this point so she missed the hilarity. Anyway, so ends our three store virtual shopping spree. Off to unpack some more.

I love urban outfitters, have only been once and i was so over whelmed at the quirky stuff in there! its meant for me, i dont think there is one thing in there i didnt like!
This is for Toni-brutal honesty here.
I don’t want this to be a downer, but we had the EXACT same dilemma. We are family of four. We thought (obsessed) about whether to move or renovate for 2+ years. We finally decided to renovate, which we are in the middle of. Our contractors are doing good work, but they did not price the job correctly. Everyday something costs more than we expected. I thought I didn’t want to move, but it was ALOT easier than I expected (we are in a rental-that adds to the expense, too), even on the kids (who hadn’t lived anywhere else). I think it had just been so long (10 years) that I forgot it wasn’t so bad. Even though this is a rental, I could stay here indefinitely. Home really is where you are. We sacrificed alot of things to renovate and stay, because we just aren’t subdivision people and couldn’t see where else we might go. I cry almost daily about what a mistake we think we’ve made. I hope that it will feel different when we move back, but right now it’s my biggest regret. If I could go back in time I would move in a heartbeat and not look back (yes, I liked our house before). You do not want that kind of stress. It’s one thing to re-do rooms, another to do a major reno. There are endless possibilities out there. Move and be happy! Especially if you don’t love the neighbors!!

thanks so much for the advice! after looking at all the pictures of john and sherry’s house reno, and reading what you wrote, i don’t think i could do anything major to this house. it’s wasn’t the packing that bothers me (lord knows i’ve done it enough times to be a pro at it) it’s the part about making memories. but–not to get too psychological here–i think my problem with that has more to do with my parent’s divorce/move and not so much with moving in general. i know my kids will feel secure no matter where they are!

Always love your pictures … what kind of camera do you use?
We use a Nikon D3000 for a lot of our home shots and a Canon PowerShot on the go (for things like these store pics). Hope it helps!

I don’t have a baby anymore, and didn’t have these when I did. And I’m just curious… when you use to shop, or anywhere that you’ll be out for a while, do you both wear one in case she wants to switch parents? Or do you just wear each others? Thanks for letting me be nosy! Ha

Thankfully Clara’s very happy to be worn by either one of us (she usually starts out looking around and ends up falling asleep since she’s so cozy) so it’s nice to know that whoever decides to wear her for that trip can do so the whole time without any protests from the beanette. That makes things nice and easy so we don’t both have to have ours with us, and can just choose the “wearer” and go with that.

Not sure if this is the best place for this comment, but just want to say Thank You for treating your blog like a “real” job! So many people have been amazed that you would still post during your move…However, I am not! You guys are professionals. If you worked outside of your home, you would still go to the office, right? You may take an afternoon off, or whatever, but for the most part, people move all the time & fit it into their regular jobs. I appreciate the respect you give your blogging, and am sure that is why you are successful at doing it. So many people feel that being self-employed is so ‘easy’, but if that were true, everyone would do it (and succeed at it). Thanks for your professionalism!
Yeah us Aussies call a Moustache a “Mo” and every year in November Aussies all grow Moustaches and call it “MOvember” and raise money for mens health. In particular prostate cancer and depression. Movember is a month full of seedy looking men…oh the Moustaches you see in November in Australia!

Nothing about this post … I was seeing if you changed your house tour (and you did! It looks great, loved how you decided to do it!) But, when you click on “current house” it’s embedded to your website/blog and when you click on “first house” its not. Not sure if that was intentional or not but I thought you may want to know if it wasn’t [intentional] and you wanted to fix it! :)

Thanks for the info about the baby carriers, Sherry. You are too sweet. We didn’t have much luck with baby-wearing for #1, but I think it will be a necessity with a baby (due in 2011) and a toddler, so I’m willing to give it another shot. great to hear first-hand experience. thanks again :) :)
I have a baby wearing question.. When going out shopping in cold weather do you take baby out of her carseat take her jacket off and put her in the ergo or put her in ergo with coat on and leave it on while in the store or… once your inside take her out of ergo take her coat off and put her back in? This is my first baby 11 weeks old and haven’t worn her out in the freezing weather yet and am unsure how others do it? I have an ergo and a beco and would love to use them in the mall this winter rather than the carseat/stroller base. Oh and I see the pictionary commercial on the hub channel all the time (I watch reruns of family ties @2am lol)

Once Clara’s in her carrier she’s usually in it for the long haul, so we don’t take her out to undress her or anything. We usually dress her in layers, so she’ll be wearing a fleece jacket over a long sleeved onesie and some pants with socks. That way she doesn’t overheat the way that she would in a thick puffy jacket but she’s still warm enough outside thanks to the thin layers that we have her in. Hope it helps!

Thanks for the ideas!! Purchased the platter and olives for my in-laws, they opened it last night – total hit!!! Oh, and the PB World Globe – my husband is marking every spot our favorite Pastor has been as a missionary…very inexpensive, yet sentimental!!! Someone could do this for a veteran, missionary or world traveler!!!
