Mmmm, Mood Boards
Ladies and gents, we’ve dreamed of this day. The day that our midnight coding tantrums and accidental hunger strikes would come to an end. That’s right, we fiiiiinally figured out how to create a simple mood board gallery that you guys can browse by color or by room. Just check out the new Mood Board tab up near our blog header:
We rounded up every last mood board that we’ve made in the last three years – which adds up to nearly 150 of them! – and whipped up (well, if you can call 50+ hours spent wrestling with code) a fun little browsing system for your perusal. Now you can find inspiration for your own home when it comes to color schemes, furniture placement, or just have some accessorizing fun. Even if the furniture, accents, or art that we’ve chosen are no longer available, they’re still useful guides for hunting down (or DIYing) something similar- and hopefully they’re just the spark that you need to get excited about your next home makeover. And of course we’d love to see before & after pics along with a link to the mood board that inspired the transformation should that occur!
And this idea gallery will always be growing since we’ll be sure to add more mood boards to the mix as we continue to whip them up (the newest boards will always be displayed first). So go forth and search mood boards to your heart’s content, either by color or by room. Or you can choose to view every last one of them if you’ve got some time on your hands. We hope you have as much fun looking around as we had coding it celebrating its completion!
Just follow this link (or visit the new Mood Boards tab under our header) and remember that you can click any mood board thumbnail for a bigger image and a link to the full source list. While it’s not the most technologically advanced gallery, we hope it does the trick of making it a bit easier to digest all of those furniture and accessory riddled mood boards.
And we’re planning something similar to wrangle all of the inspirational “afters” that we’ve featured thanks to readers and people that we’ve house crashed over the years too (just picture one big database of Reader Redesigns, Design Dilemmas that have been solved, and House Crashings arranged by room and color for you to sift through). But for now we’re just trying to muster the energy to look at all of that HTML again. So stay tuned!

Love it! Love it! Love it! Mood boards are what I love the most about YHL.
Have you considered having readers send in their own mood boards “creations”? I know you are no longer offering the mood board design service because of time constraints. But if a reader creates their own mood board and you think it’s falls within the YHL style, the mood board gets selected to be posted in the blog. Also, an alternative is to tweak their mood board and post the “tweaked” mood board version. That way, readers can still get your opinion on mood boards but they do the majority of the work. Maybe this increases the mood board postings. Just a thought!

Love the mood boards! i have a quick question…our bedroom is small and we painted it a basil green color, which is a little darker than I’d like. Any way to brighten things up without re-painting? Thanks so much!

Just lighten things up with accessories- light art (mirrors or frames with big white mats) and breezy white or cream curtains can brighten things in a snap. Even items like a light colored duvet and two bedside lamps with bright white shades will keep things crisp and airy as well. Good luck!

John is 100% self-taught. He knew nothing when we started blogging three years ago and has amazingly just googled around and read some books and picked things up along the way. My hero! It wasn’t an overnight skill (there’s definitely a learning curve and a ton of frustration when you’re getting started) but all of his hard work is certainly paying off. So proud of him!

You’re right, we’ll have to hunt that down and add it (since we submit those articles to DIY they’re kept in a different place than our blog mood boards). Hopefully we can find a high res version to upload soon. And we can’t wait to see those after shots. Send ‘em, send ‘em!

I live in a rental, so cant paint or hang very much on the walls – great to see what colours work together well based on the mood boards without having to do paint samples. . .as otherwise id be tempted to want to paint and hope the landlord wouldnt notice! haha

I noticed a lack of navy – one of my favorite colors for decorating – in these mood boards. Is navy “out” these days?

No way! We love navy. The only reason it might not appear in a lot of mood boards is because they’re shaped by our client’s requests (they filled out a thorough questionnaire before we whipped up a board) so perhaps people were afraid their spaces couldn’t take such a deep color or preferred something lighter or brighter? Hope it helps!

I know YHL is all about house DIY 101, but if you ever find yourself coming up short on posts, would LOVE it if you did some tutorials. Like how in the heck to make one of these cool mood boards. I’ve been looking up help on Photoshop and it all seems too complex. Bah.
Ooh that’s a fun idea! Maybe I can write a mood board 101 post for our blogiversary or something. As a tip in the meantime, I’ve heard awesome things about polyvore.com and mydeco.com (both are free and do a lot of the “coding” for you).
