All Right Stop, Renovate, and Listen
Ice is back with a brand new… home improvement show? Yep, Vanilla Ice (aka Robert Van Winkle) is getting a series on the DIY Network chronicling the renovations that he’s doing to his six-bedroom 7,000 square foot home in Florida.

When I first read about it in Entertainment Weekly a few weeks back I can’t tell which part caught me off guard the most- the fact that Vanilla Ice has cred as a house flipper (apparently he’s been doing home improvement for 15 years) or that his career has afforded him a 7,000 square foot home. Either way, consider our curiosity officially piqued and the chances that we’ll be tuning in for the Oct 14th premiere high.

What about you? Are you tempted enough to see what Mr. Ice Ice Baby can turn out as far as a DIY show goes? Are you hoping he’ll break out his old rhymes while he’s at it – or are you happy to see him finding a new line of work? And of course we can’t mention Ice without including a link to his one-hit-wonderful video. Happy Friday everyone. Word to your mother.

I don’t know enough about his skills so I can’t judge, however based on his previous career choices he may come up with one good idea and that’s it. Also, I do not think he is much of a DIY guy, based on the images from the show he has a whole crew doing the stuff for him, that is not DIY on my book.
I would love to hear that you guys get a DYI TV deal, now that would be reason enough for me to get cable.
Hey guys,
I’ve been a big fan of your blog for a while now, mainly because it seemed to have a clear, appealing theme: you’re a fun, young couple tackling home improvement projects on a budget. But lately I’ve been turned off by some of the content you’re including. This post about Vanilla Ice just seems like filler. If I wanted news about reality TV shows, I could easily find it elsewhere. I love YHL but I hope you guys will stick to the kind of homespun decorating advice that you excel at.

Hey Elizabeth,
Thanks for the feedback! We find that different readers love different posts so we just write about what interests us and try to work in a good mix of everything from decor and home improvement related projects (and magazines, books, shows, etc) to being green, gardening, and even cleaning & organizing. Hope that explains why we do what we do!

best. post. ever.
The ‘Ice dumped a bottle of water on my head at a concert. True story.
You seriously typed “Word to your mother” ! I love it. Thanks for keeping it young and real (and not taking yourselves too seriously!)
For me it’s that his career has afforded him a 7000 square foot home part!!!! :0)
oh.em.gee. are you serious!?? Ice is back with a brand new edition?? haha, how you could you NOT check this out?
OK, this might be my favorite post of yours ever! So hilarious and and creatively done–word to your mother–LOL! Perfect combo of elements, and yes, I most definitely will be watching.
Great job guys, as always. ps-you’ve officially set today’s theme song…no one would read and not have it start playing in their head.
Thanks for the morning “Dance Break” at my desk :)
Yes I’ll definitely watch, curiosity piqued. And I know Vanilla is extremely embarrassed by his past, but imho, Ice Ice Baby is still the catchiest dance tune ever … oh and Ice, please, stop with the tats, we get it, you’re not that guy anymore.
LOL @ “word to your mother” – CLASSIC!
Thanks for the laugh today!
OMG!! John, I had the SAME EXACT THOUGHT…how in the world does that guy afford a 7,000 square foot house?!?? Clearly, he had better financial advisors back then than, say, MC Hammer or Milli Vanilli, so I guess he’s got that going for him! LOL!
Did you see that Men’s Health magazine article on Jeremy Renner (star of “The Hurt Locker”) — he said he makes more money flipping houses in Los Angeles than he does as an actor. It’s a bit strange to read about a Hollywood actor working at demo and renovation for a career.
Interesting! We didn’t see that article! We’ll have to check it out!

Hope he doesn’t steal one of your DIY ideas and claim it’s his!
hahaha, oh boy, I can’t wait to watch this train wreck. ;)
Another “celebrity” who had a house flipping show is comedian Adam Carolla, who actually does know what he’s doing because he used to be a carpenter. He’s just renovating a regular house (the one he grew up in, actually), although the show is more about his incompetent crew. :) My husband and I enjoyed it, but we’re already fans of his. Oh yeah, it’s called “The Adam Carolla Project”.
REALLY!?!??? Interesting…
I’m sure he does get some royalty checks from Ice Ice, Baby. I mean kids that were babies when that song first came out even know the words–it’s played everywhere!
Is it just me or are you guys shocked he still has money!? He must have made bank on that one song to afford such a nice house.
One word: Seriously??!
Thank you ever so much for that post title. It gave me a good giggle :)
well we all knew he had to have SOMETHING to fall back on; maybe he’s actually good at this?
Okay, my jaw literally dropped when I read this post. I had no idea that the Ice flipped houses! Very interesting… makes me wish we had cable so I could watch the upcoming series! Oh well, maybe it’ll encourage me to hit up the gym more… :)
And I LOVED the “word to your mother”!!! Hahaha, totally cracked me up!
Thanks for the entertaining post!

Okay, so confused. Let me get this straight. He is getting his own show & he has a 7k sq. foot home? The last time I was this confused was when they reported Haley Joel Osment was in a car accident while driving his Saturn wagon.
I can’t lie – I am pretty pumped about this show. :) There is something you just have to love about Vanilla Ice!
I see that I am not the first to come over here and type the words…
best.post.ever. *sobbing* That is some of the funniest stuff I have seen in a while!!
I find it incredibly entertaining that you have also had folks say that they don’t like this kind of post. Variety is the spice of life! I am glad that you are still blogging all over the spectrum. Can’t please everyone, but I am glad that you post this (because you clearly found it amusing, too) than you not update the blog for stints at a time because you don’t have some very YHL-specific topic to discuss!
I’m totally watching Mr. Ice come October! (Thanks for sharing the deets!!) I hope he renovates better than he raps. =P
Hahaha – this made me laugh!
Please. One and a half hit wonder. You know you loved Ninja Rap at the end of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II. Go Ninja Go Ninja Go Ninja Go! He can rap that while he’s using his drill press!
Thank you for the laugh, can’t stop giggling over “word to your mother”!
MC Hammer will end up w/a DIY show too and call it “stop, hammer time”
HAHA! That’s rad. I’m actually really excited to see what he whips up! Thanks for sharing- I would have missed it!!! Seriously someone needs to give me (or you…) a show!
OMG, this is awesome! I will definitely watch that show to see what the heck he’s capable of. I loooved “Ice Ice Baby” back in 6th grade, and have it on my iPod now just for a good laugh. :)
Oh my god! Vanilla Ice! Hysterical. And his real last name is Van Winkle? Even better. If I had DIY I’d tune in for sure!
Ugh, a one-hit wonder with a 7,000-square-foot home?
I’ll be avoiding this show like the plague.
I’ll definitely watch, if only to see if he tosses in some lyrics during projects :)
A simple search on the Palm Beach County Property Appraiser website brought up the home I believe he is “flipping”. He owns one home in Wellington, FL and it is 5000 something sq ft, so unless he’s done renovations, I don’t know where they got 7000 sq ft. Plus he bought the home in 2005 orginally for a little over 715K. It also showed he owns two other properties under a different name, a “company” name possibly. A LOT of homes are in foreclosure in Palm Beach County and it’s possible that his home is in foreclosure or soon to be and that that is why he’s doing this.
I have become a recent obsessive reader of your blog as a fellow Virginian who has relocated to Florida. My husband and I just bought a house and I’ve been using your diy advice. I was cracking up when I read this blog because this house he lives in is about two communities down the street from where we live. My neighbor actually saw him at the grocery store and got a picture of Mr. Ice with his 2 year old. It will be interesting to follow the progress a few street away!!
Yeah…that’s funny.
Funny story…I met Mr. Van Winkle at Walmart here in Lincoln, NE. It was after his show with Snoop Dog. I asked him what “Ice Ice Baby” was and he said “Me, Baby.” He had like 500 tatoos. I might watch the show, because you know, I did talk to him one time and all! :)
Um. Dudes. I seriously have that song stuck in my head now. And the video playing in my mind. Oh god, the dance. The Pants™!
:curses:
Love this post, though. I want to watch Mr. Vanilla in the same way I want to watch the aftermath of an accident. I know I shouldn’t, but …
Thanks for posting that!! Just the laugh I needed first thing in the am! I found it hilarious and I would tune in just out of curiousity. You guys ROCK!!
fun to revisit that video. If his hammering has the same rythym as his dancing it should be a fun show.
I so want to see this. Who knows? He may have found his true calling in life! And thanks for the link. Some of my co-workers watched the MV during a break and could not stop laughing.
You guys are hilarious! I found myself singing along as I read your post. I love your witty style of writing – it’s nice to start the day with a laugh!
The only reason why I would take a peak at this show is to see his eyebrows.
BTW, when my first child was a baby, Vanilla Ice’s song was popular and I would change the words to “Mess, mess, baby” when I would clean her up in her high chair.
Hahaha, I love this post. I disagree with the person who complained about this being a filler post. You guys post so often that I see no problem with a post that is fun and house-related even if it isn’t design advice.
best post title ever :o)
Totally laughing. Wondering if they will refer to him as Vanilla in the show. Trying to remember the name of that horrible movie he played a gansta in…i
Word to your mother…I about peed my pants. Thanks for keeping it real, I imagine you guys laughed till your sides hurt writing this one.
You know, I will probably watch it since I am so desperate for a good home improvement and/or decorating show these days! I used to love HGTV but I am so sick of all the real estate shows that I have almost stopped watching it…and it’s probably why I started reading decorating blogs like yours. You guys really help feed my decorating obsession! Thanks!
More like “Ice is back with a brand new addition…” ;)
Thanks for the heads up, will definitely watch. And also, I don’t mean to split hairs, but Vanilla Ice did sing the Ninja Rap in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie… so let’s go easy on the one hit references.
Good point, Allison! We’ll give him one-and-a-half hits. How ’bout that? :)
-John
I love that you guys posted about this–I likely wouldn’t have heard about it otherwise, and I love a good home improvement show…especially if it’s featuring Vanilla Ice. I can’t wait to see him “back with a brand new edition”!!
John, dear John,
You’ve forgotten about the best love song EVAR.

I’m sure you’ll be singing it to Sherry tonight. :nods:
