Keeping It Real: The Baby Gear Factor
Since the day that we announced there was a bun in my oven, we’ve been getting comments and emails to request details about how our house is changing thanks to our growing family. And now that Clara is two months old (time flies!) we decided that it was high time we took some candid photos to show exactly how our home has changed thanks to all of the baby gear that we’ve accumulated thus far (and yes, we know it’ll only grow from here, so stay tuned to see how we deal with everything else as we go).

The following photos weren’t edited or cleaned up in any way- they’re actual snapshots. And you know what? We really like our house this way. It’s lived-in and casual and convenient and functional- all the things that we strive for when it comes to home decor. And the best thing about every single item is that we have a place for it when it’s not in use. And we’re thinking this is the key. So although all of these photos show you how things look when they’re out and about, they could all be tucked away if we felt the need to de-babify the house for company (although all of our visitors these days are here to see Clara, so they love observing her in her natural habitat).
So without further ado… the baby-tastic-keeping-it-real-a-day-in-the-life reveal.
This is what the bedroom looks like on the regular. We don’t make the bed anymore, ever. Well, except maybe if we’re having company (even then we sometimes skip it since we somehow have this “get out of jail free” card thanks to the whole you-have-a-newborn concept). And yes, Burger sleeps in until about noon so he can usually be found in bed next to some books that we’ve read to Clara earlier that morning. The cutest thing is that when Burger does finally drag his lazy butt out of bed he immediately seeks out his little sister…

… as demonstrated by this photo of Burger hunting down Clara, only to find her in her swing in the den (it actually gets moved back and forth between the den and the office, depending where we are).

See, Clara loves her Boppy Travel swing. It’s definitely her favorite “baby item” and it’s worth its weight in gold to us. We opted for a smaller and less expensive “travel swing” (which we use all the time, not just when we’re traveling). Thankfully, it has a smaller footprint. And amazingly, it comes in a very neutral color scheme that actually goes with a ton of the items in our house. That’s definitely not a necessity, but it’s always a welcome bonus. We actually hoped this swing could multitask as a bouncy seat of sorts, since you know we’d rather buy one item that can serve a few purposes. So while it doesn’t have a vibrating setting like most bouncers, it’s low to the ground and when the swing isn’t on it serves as a convenient non-vibrating bouncy seat-ish device (which is handy to set Clara in when we eat for example). Of course every baby is different – Clara’s cousin hates his swing and loves his bouncie seat – but we’re so happy that we didn’t bring in two items when we found one that does the job of two.
Oh and see that pink blanket folded over the back of the chair in the photo above? That’s for playtime/tummy time in the den. We’ve learned that it’s easier to keep two plush floor blankets around (one in the den and one in the office) so they’re always on hand wherever we are for some floor playing, neck exercising, rolling over, and ceiling staring. It’s amazing what babies like to do in their spare time.
Next we have the laundry…

The arrival of Clara has definitely meant that there’s more to wash and dry, but thankfully her clothes are all so small that we can cram about a million onesies into one energy efficient load. Of course we can’t wait to break out our cloth diapers (Clara is still a smidge too small for them) which will add even more to our laundry pile, but will make buying the Seventh Generation disposable dipes that we’ve been using a thing of the past. Wahoo!
The bathroom doesn’t always look like this, but every other day it does thanks to bath time. Clara LOVES bath time, and thanks to a tip from John’s sister (an expert mother of three) we don’t have to struggle to store a big hulking plastic baby tub since she recommended this yellow foam version from Target (which is so easy to squeeze out and store in one of the baskets in our open linen closet). It’s super cushy and comfy, amazingly inexpensive, and it’ll work for at least a year or so (when babies get bigger they can sit on them, which is how John’s sister washes her nine month old). Gotta love a $10 solution like that.

Here’s the other blanket that we always have on hand. This one lives in the office, but instead of being folded over the back of a chair when it’s not in use (like the one in the den) this one is pretty much always on the floor with some toys on it. It’s a great little station for Clara to play, put in some tummy time, and even sleep on occasion (sometimes with Burger curled up next to her).

And since one of us is always on Clara-duty while the other one is on blog-duty it’s also nice to have so much rug space for one of us to get down there with her and hold up a few toys while she smiles adoringly and tracks them with her big blue eyes.

The other thing to note in here is the Boppy on the sofa (we think it’s cute that it kind of looks like a C shaped pillow for Clara). Since I nurse anywhere and everywhere (the bedroom, the office, the den, the living room, the nursery, the sunroom, even the car…) I like to have it on hand, so it usually travels from room to room. But thanks to the soft blue color it pretty much fits into most of our spaces without looking too crazy. It’s certainly not a designer pillow but it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb (like some of that primary-colored kid gear would in our more subdued casa).
Next we have our much-loved Joovy Kooper stroller (we opted for one stroller that does it all from newborn to big kid age instead of having to purchase and store a number of different varieties). Thanks to daily walks around the neighborhood with Burger and Clara this thing gets a ton of action. And as we mentioned, all the items that you see in this post usually look just like this, but they do have a designated “stash spot” just in case we want to clean things up. And the stroller’s stash spot is actually the trunk of the car (we love that it’s pretty much always with us that way, but when we’re feeling lazy we don’t bother folding it up and just pop it in the sunroom instead). It definitely doesn’t blend in with the beachy white daybed, but it’s convenient and we have a two month old- so again, we’re happy to give ourselves a pass.

In the nursery it’s usually not too messy thanks to the big bin o’ toys under the bench (it’s so easy to pull things out and pop them right back in) but Clara has been LOVING her Bumbo so that has been making regular appearances in there. It was actually a hand-me-down from a friend, so we’re shocked/thrilled that it works so well with the colors in the room. And although it might look staged, that book in front of it was right there when we walked by to snap a pic. No funny business. If my memory serves me correctly, we were just in the middle of reading it when there was a spit-up incident that had to be tended to. Hence the half-read book…

We actually feared that the kitchen would explode once Clara joined the pack, but so far (since she’s not yet on solid food) we’ve just added three fun glass bottles by Weego and a small bottle drying rack from Target (she’s on an 100% momma’s milk diet, but on rare occasions I do pump just to be sure she’ll take a bottle). Many friends and family members warned us not to go crazy buying tons of bottles so we heeded their advice, and these three bottles have been all we’ve needed (actually we’ve probably only needed one so far). Oh and the reason we picked orange, blue, and yellow for the bottle colors were because we plan to use as much of our baby gear as possible for future bambinos, so gender neutral color choices seem to be more practical for the long haul.

So that’s how Casa Petersik has evolved thus far. And in case anyone’s wondering about our “stash spot” method, it was probably an extension of our “if everything has a place it’s easier to clean up and maintain the house on autopilot” theory. Therefore we devoted the small skinny cabinet right above the drying rack to bottles (and future spoons, sippy cups, and snack holders) while the Bumbo has a spot on the top shelf of Clara’s closet in the nursery. And just as the stroller can be folded up and tossed in the trunk of the car, the Boppy and the blanket on the floor of the office can easily be tossed into the closet in there on a moment’s notice. The foam bath mat gets wrung out and slipped into one of the baskets in the open linen closet while laundry can get folded and put away if we’re trying to tidy up. And since the swing is actually a travel swing it can be folded up and stashed in a closet (we’ve also been known to tuck it up on the shelves above the laundry behind the bamboo blinds so no one’s the wiser).
And of course we could make the bed if we felt the pressure. But lately we must admit that we’ve been loving the distinct lack of pressure around here. We’ve always been cool with imperfection (which is why we paint paneling instead of removing it and make our own DIY art instead of springing for the good stuff by the pros) but having a baby has been pretty great for hammering home the fact that a happy home is a lived-in and loved home… especially when it’s so functional that it buys you more time to hang out as a family.
Note: None of the makers of the baby gear that we’ve mentioned above have paid or perk’d us in any way- they’re just items that Clara has grown to love, so we’re happy to share the goods.

I’ve been saving all you pre-baby preparing posts and post-baby must have posts. my hubby and i are 3 months along! I was wondering if there is 1 place to go on your site for all stuff “Clara”? I used your wedding tab to help with great diy wedding ideas and a clara tab would come in handy. I read your comment above from the 29th and am looking forward to the new posts :)
Hey Meggan C,
We’ll be adding a baby related section to our How To page soon, but until then you can click the “Topics” tab up by the search bar and scroll down to “Baby Business” where you’ll find all things Clara. Hope it helps!

What brand of head and body support do you have in the stroller?
Thanks!!
Hey Lena,
That’s a Snuzzler that we registered for along with the stroller (we believe the brand is actually called Snuzzler and we got it from Buy Buy Baby). Clara loves it! Hope it helps!

Hi!
I love your design advice/tips/DIYs–but lately have been loving the baby advice even more! I am thinking about registering for the joovy kooper–it looks a lot like the phil&ted’s model i was registered for but much more reasonably priced and with great reviews. Where did you get the infant sized insert? I can’t seem to find it.
Thank you!
never mind–just found my answer right above my comment!! haha. Thank you!
Hi guys, love your blog! I have a 5 week old and she’s not a big fan of tummy time on the play mats we have – just wondering where you found those great plush blankets? They look so comfy cozy! I love both the one you had over the chair and in the laundry(pink/green) and the one you had on the floor. Please and thank you! <3
Hey Mandi,
They were both gifts so we’re not sure where they’re from but the tag on the cream one says Baby Jak San Francisco and the tag on the pink one says Swankie Blankie. Maybe you can google around for more info? Hope it helps!

Hey there! Is there a post you guys did (I just can’t seem to find it if there is…) about a round up of great baby gear you can’t live without? I know the diapers were one of them.. but wanted to see some of your other favorites :)
Hey Michelle,
This post has just what you’re looking for: http://www.younghouselove.com/2010/06/something-free-five-lifesavers/ Enjoy!

I can’t find your baby bath liner/sponge/foam thing on Target’s website. Can you possibly send a link? Or is it something they might have in the stores only?
Thanks for your list of must haves!! It’s been very helpful!!
Hey Michelle,
We think it’s only in stores since we can’t find it online either. Hope it helps!

Hey yall! Your stroller really intrigued me so I went to the Joovy Kooper website. Under the specs it says can be used starting at 6months…how did yall work around that?
Hey Anne,
Thanks to recommendations from two friends we adapted it with an Infant Snuzzler insert. Clara has used it since ten days in the fully reclined position. The girl loves it!

I love the stroller you picked. But I have a question on it. On Amazon’s site it say for 6 months and up, but you are using it on newborn with no problem? I’d love to not have to buy multiple things too!!
Nevermind!! LOL I just saw the answer- Thanks
Hi guys,
Sorry if I’m asking you a question you’ve answered several times but I’ve been looking through your blog trying to find if you mentioned what infant carrier you decided on. We’re in hunt for our first one now and would love any input you may have!
Thanks!!
We actually have three! I used a HotSling until Clara recently outgrew it and John uses and loves the Ergo. I recently was gifted a BabyHawk Mei Tai carrier that I love, so that’s all three!

Oops! thanks for the info but I was meaninig to ask about infant carrier carseats – like chicco keyfit, graco snug ride, peg perego? The one actually used for vehicle transportation!
Thanks again for the info!!
Hey Megan,
We got a Chicco Keyfit 30. Love it!

Hi Sherry,
Can I ask why you decided to do an infant car carrier and not a convertible? I am just starting my research and am hoping to learn from yours (since I bet you researched all options very thoroughly!). You guys are the best!
Hey Lacey,
When it came to keeping things simple and not having too many gadgets the appeal of getting a convertible seat was hard to resist, but study after study that we read said that infant carriers are much safer for smaller babies so we opted to put Clara’s safety first! Hope it helps.

Hi Sherry,
Thanks for answering my last question! Now I’m curious…many parents gripe about transporting a sleeping infant from their car seat to stroller, and justify buying the infant stoller attachment for the carseat. I think it’s great you were able to buy a stroller that will last her long after her first 6 months. Have you had any issues moving her from car seat to stroller?
Thanks!
Absolutely not. Every baby is different, but we theorize that it might have even made Clara a better sleeper (she sleeps 12 hours at night for us) since she has learned to sleep through anything (even transporting from car seat to stroller). We also babywear (using an Ergo, etc) so we figured we would have to take her out of her seat to do that so the stroller isn’t much different.

s
All great points, Sherry. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer BOTH of my questions!
Hi!
I was just wondering where you guys registered. I have read through a bunch of comments and posts, and couldn’t find it. (So I’m sorry if it was already mentioned!) There are so many places to register… would you mind sharing where you registered, and why you chose that retailer? I am going to try to register for organic/natural/non-plastic items, but it is difficult to find a “brick and mortar” store that carries those items. I am leaning towards registering at Amazon, but am afraid that elderly people would consider it rude for me to be registered only online. So… I was just hoping to get your point of view!
Thanks much!
We did Buy Buy Baby (who actually had a surprising amount of green stuff) & Target. Hope it helps!

Hey guys! Regarding your Joovy Kooper stroller – I notice that you have a fluffy white insert in the seat of the stroller, for when Clara was teeny tiny, I’m sure. Where did you get that accessory? Is it Joovy specific? I looked on their site and can’t find it.
Thanks for the help!
Hey Meghan,
That’s a Snuzzler (not Joovy related, we got it at Buy Buy Baby). Worked like a charm until she was around 6 months old!

Hi Sherry & John,
My apologies if you already answered this… but we’re looking for that same bath time sponge that you use for Clara from Target for our soon-to-arrive babe and I can’t seem to find it. Do you know the name?
Thanks! Morgan
We don’t know the name but we know it’s in-store only (can’t find it online). Hope it helps!
xo,

Oops! Just saw the comment where you answered my question :), I’ll check the Target store!
PS Would you consider the inserts for Bum Genius now that you’ve used the All in Ones for a while?
We wouldn’t but it’s definitely a subjective thing. We love the all-in-one feature. So simple.

Thanks for all of these baby tips! Curious if you bought a baby monitor and if so, what kind. Did you like it? Did you wish for something different?
Thanks!!
We got an Angel Care monitor (so it’s a sound and breathing monitor, not a video monitor). We love it and still use it every night- even travel with it.
xo,
s
That’s one that I was looking at. Thanks!
We have the one that comes with two sensors (since Clara’s a rolly poly girl these days). Hope it helps!

My husband and I are expecting our first baby in July and I want to get a one-size-fits-all stroller like you mentioned above. In my searching for the Joovy Kooper, I couldn’t find anything that confirmed it works for newborns. Did you purchase a separate insert to make it work until Clara was 6 months or so? Thanks for the help! – Bethany
Yup, an Infant Snuzzler from Buy Buy Baby did the trick along with the stroller in the most reclined position! We used it from two weeks old until 6 months and have since removed the Snuzzler and unreclined it so she can sit up and see the world. Still very much in love with it!

Hi Sherry and John!
I’m expecting our first baby in October and I’m finding there is a lot of pressure to register for/buy a travel system. I notice you went with the Joovy Kooper stroller and wanted to avoid having lots of strollers of different sizes/purposes. I love the Chicco KeyFit infant car seat but I feel like the stroller that goes with it is clunky and bulky. If I got that one, I’d feel the need to get a lightweight umbrella stroller for when we don’t want to use the big one. We have a tiny 780 sq. ft. apt. and I do NOT want to store two strollers. But people keep telling me that having the infant carseat be able to snap into the stroller is a god-send… I just wanted your opinion on this – do you regret at all not getting the travel system? Was it hard taking Clara in and out of her carseat to go into the stroller, especially when she was so little? would you definitely still recommend the does-it-all joovy stroller? thanks for taking the time to answer my question. And keep up the great work – it’s thank to you guys that my husband and I have been inspired to use cloth diapers with our baby… and go green/live with less in as many other areas as possible!
Nope, we didn’t know any differently (it’s not like we were used to a snap n’ go) but we never missed it. We actually used baby carriers most of the time (I had a sling and a mei tai and John loved the ergo) so Clara had to come out of her seat either way for those. So popping her into the stroller wasn’t a big deal either (we actually wonder if it made her a more sound sleeper since she sleeps through location changes like that). It’s just one momma’s opinion but we love our all-in-one Joovy Kooper and our Chicco KeyFit 30. Clara’s over 10 months old and they’ve been all we need (and will hopefully fit the bill for the next year as well. Hope it helps!

Hey Sherry!
Now that you are almost a year into using your Joovy, are you still enjoying it?
My husband and I are going to England with our 5 month old, and we need a stroller that will travel well–lightweight for all the public transpo, folds well, reclines, sturdy but not too expensive. Do you think the Kooper would travel well, or would it be too big and bulky?
THanks for any advice!
Erin
We still love our Joovy Kooper for sure! It’s definitely not as light and easy to cart around as a lightweight umbrella stroller, but we’ve taken it around a lot over the last almost-a-year and have never had any issues. If you think a 5 month old could do a light umbrella stroller that might be the easiest, but if you want more support and cushioning with the reclining seat, the Joovy will be awesome. Good luck!

I know this is almost a year after this was originally posted, but I just found your blog due to BabyCenter (so I started reading back when Sherry was pregnant).
I just wanted to tell you that your posts about your ideas from yoour pregnancy have encouraged me to stick with what I believe is right for us, instead of what everyone else is telling me. (I got a long lecture from some friends when I told them I was using glass bottles and a Bumbo and that I didn’t feel the need to buy a play yard!)
So THANK YOU times a million for being you and sharing it with us.

Hi!
I hope you still check this because I have a quick question for you. I’m going to do the Lifefactory bottles for my little one, and was wondering what (if any) pacifiers do you/did you use? I’ve heard you should use similar nipples for simplicities’ sake. Any input would be so great! Thanks!
Clara never took a pacifier (she’s a thumb sucker like John and I were when we were young) but we got a natural latex pacifier from a natural store a while back (it’s tan and looks really eco and comes in a tip that was similar to the bottles). Hope it helps!

Hi Sherry,
I was wondering if you would mind sharing which breast pump you have? I am currently shopping for one and would find any recommendation helpful. Thanks!
I got the Swing one by Medela. Sadly I never really took to it and Clara never took to a bottle, but luckily I work from home so I could just feed “from the source” if you know what I mean. So mine’s like new. Haha.
xo,
s
just wondering how clara took to the bottles that you guys showed in this post. i have a lot of the same philosophies as you guys as far as organics/chemicals/plastic, so i definitely want to use glass bottles if i can (my first is due in november). i have heard though that the baby doesn’t always like the bottles that you pick and that you may have to go with another brand. so, just wanted to know how clara liked these ones. thanks!
Strangely enough Clara didn’t take to bottles at all (and I didn’t take to pumping) so she has fed “from the source” for the last 14 months. Of course if I didn’t work from home I might have tried more with pumping/bottles, but it seemed to work out well for her and I. So I’m glad I didn’t buy a ton of bottles! Haha. Thankfully she loves a sippy cup and can drink through a straw too, but earlier on she was more attached to the idea of “mommy” than something synthetic I think (eve an all natural glass bottle and nipple). So picky. Haha. Hope it helps!

I was hoping this post would mention which car seat you use and what you think of it. We have an infant one, but will have to buy another one once she gets to be 22 lbs. So now I’m wish I had gotten a convertible one to begin with. What did you guys do? Thanks!
We used a Chicco Keyfit 30 until she was 13 months and outgrew it (length wise, not weight wise) so we got a Britax Roundabout (on sale through diapers.com). It’s really highly rated and Clara seems to like it.

s
I realize I am commenting on a very old post, but wondered if you could provide a link to Clara’s foam tub and stroller mentioned in the above post. I am shopping for some early items as we are due in March and I have really appreciated having your blog to look at for some guidance. It is great to be able to get your opinion on practical baby items and really cuts down on the amount of time I have to spend researching.
Thank you,
Ann
The foam tub wasn’t something we could find online but it was at Target in stores for about $7 (it’s yellow and in a big white box with a baby on the front- haha). As for the stroller, we got that from BuyBuy Baby but I bet if you search Joovy Kooper you can find it anywhere (like amazon.com, etc).
xo,
s
I really like your stroller. Could you please give me more detalis about it like where did you purchase it from? how much? model name? which car seat did you use with it? Can convertible 3-in-one carseat be used with it? Did the stroller come with the white seat thing in it? Thanks a lot for your time.
It’s not a convertible one (no snap-n-go/carseat capabilities) and it’s called The Joovy Kooper. They sell it at Buy Buy Baby and it was $150 I think? The seat fully reclines so when you add an infant insert (we used a Snuzzler) it can be used pretty much from birth on, and Clara’s still using it at 20+ months. Hope it helps!
xo,
s
Did you have any problems with the front wheels of the Joovy Kooper? In online reviews it seems to be a common problem…
Nope, almost two years in and we still use it every day without issue!

I’ve been waiting a long time to read this post – thanks for all the great info!
