Corrie & Don’s Design Dilemma
Corrie and Don are ready to transform their bedroom into something cozy and romantic. Here’s their letter:
We’re pretty open to anything you want to do. As you can see by the room, anything will be better than what we have! We’d really enjoy a romantic, cozy, and comfortable feel in the room. The only thing that must stay is the bedding (which photographed much shinier/brighter than it is) and the weenie’s dog room (aka: the crate). Everything else can go. I think that I’d like to try a DIY headboard, so I need a fabric suggestion. However, I might staple myself to the headboard, so I’d love your thoughts on a “pre-made” one as well. In honor of our two weenie dogs, we’d love if you could incorporate the dachshund print that you sell in your shop. We definitely want a new wall color (I love how you make everything light and airy)! Our favorite colors are brown, blue, green, & silver. My hubby’s only request is that we have a ceiling fan (we need a new one- brass isn’t as cool as it used to be!). What are your thoughts on a full size mirror like the one you have in your bedroom? We’d love to work one of those in. I love what you’ve done with the other bedrooms you design! Thanks in advance- we really appreciate it! – Corrie & Don

Here’s the plan:

And here’s the new layout suggestion:

Now for the mood board breakdown.

1. The color scheme for this room is based around the existing bedding that Corrie and Don love (which is actually a nice powder blue and chocolate hue- it just photographed shinier and brighter for some reason). To accent the brown and blue bedding we’d love to see some handsome dark wood pieces mixed in with some light and airy tan and cream tones to keep things from feeling too heavy. Then to keep things interesting and a bit layered, we think a soft gray-green on the walls (as seen in the strip of color along the top of the mood board) will actually complement everything from the bedding to the other more neutral tones that we’ll be bringing in. Benjamin Moore’s Fresh Dew 435 should be the perfect pick, and we’d love to see it carried up onto those peaked ceilings to unify the room for an expansive and unbroken effect.
2. These gorgeous linen curtains have leather tabs at the top to add more of the luxe chocolate color that we’ll be introducing in some of the furnishings (to work with the existing bedding). But since the majority of the curtains are sandy and soft, they won’t feel too heavy and overwhelming in the space- especially when they’re hung high and wide on each window to make it appear larger and taller for a spacious and airy feel.
3. One of these stunning (and amazingly priced) glass lamps from Ikea will look great on either side of the bed on matching side tables that we’ll be elaborating on more in a minute. They’ll add some nice balance to the new focal wall, as well as function (since everyone loves clicking off the light from bed instead of getting up to turn off the wall switch).
4. We were flattered that Corrie and Don requested to work our very own dachshund prints into their room since they have two of them that they adore. We actually thought two prints (one for each pup) would look cute framed next to each other and hung above the console table that we’ll be chatting about in a moment. And of course the soft cucumber color will complement the light celery walls beautifully.
5. Although the curtains will be hung wide on the windows behind the bed, there will still be a bit of a gap between them, and we think this graphic and gorgeous round mirror is just the thing to fill that space with style to spare. It really is a room-making piece if we’ve ever seen one.
6. Corrie mentioned that she’d love to attempt to upholster her own headboard (with the help of our tutorial) so we thought this lovely fabric (on sale!) would be perfect for that project. And if it gets too complicated for her, we also picked out this ready-made headboard option as she requested. We also think Corrie should order a few extra yards of the very same fabric to create a pooch-friendly slipcover for the dog crate that must stay in the room. We recommend slipping the crate under a console table (more on that later). And if the top, back and sides of the crate are covered with fabric (sort of like an open-front ottoman) there will still be plenty of air circulation but it’ll look a lot less cage-ish from all angles. We actually cover Burger’s crate with a blanket on all sides but the front and he loves the cozy feeling (dogs are den animals so they usually like to snuggle into their spaces).
7. Here’s the new ceiling fan that Don requested. The classic oil-rubbed bronze finish will complement the dark wood furnishings beautifully and even the glowing warm-toned glass bulb covers will tie in with all the other tans and creams that will soon be layered into the space.
8. Here’s the bedding that Corrie and Don already have and love. Since the colors read more accurately in the board than they do in the photos, we wanted to include the image to demonstrate how everything will come together. You’ll notice that we added a tan and ivory pillow to the bed to break up all the blue & brown while injecting some light and airy tones that will grace the rest of the room. Oh we’d also recommend that Corrie and Don grab the matching bedskirt (or another chocolate or tan option) for an even more finished look (it really will make all the difference!).
This number also represents the console table that we mentioned when we talked about covering the crate with an open-front fabric slipcover. As we already began to explain, we’d love to see the console table placed on the wall to the right of the bed (so the crate will be partially obscured by the side of the bed when placed underneath). With the little doggie hotel slipped right under it with some coordinating fabric covering the top and sides of the wire pooch palace, the entire setup will create a more polished and integrated look. And topping the console table with a few stacks of large hardcover books (bonus points if they’re brown, tan, cream, blue or gray-green) with these charming oversized white artichokes atop each pile will add even more to the arrangement.
9. Here’s the elegant sand and chocolate rug with a bit of interesting linear style (but nothing too crazy that would compete too strongly with the patterned bedding). We definitely think that one of the easiest ways to define a focal wall and add a ton of cozy style to a bedroom is to bring in an area rug around the bed. Even with wall to wall carpeting the effect is always layered and lovely.
10. We think the slice of wall across from the bed is perfect for this affordably priced leaning mirror that Corrie and Don requested (a similar version from West Elm is around 4x more expensive!). It’ll give them ample room to glance at their clothes before they head out the door, and it’ll also reflect a ton of light from the windows across the room to make the space feel even more breezy and open.
11. Here’s the nightstand that we’d love to see on each side of the bed with matching glass-based Ikea lamps on ‘em for effortless balance and a nice polished effect.
So there you have it. A cozy bedroom full of soft and inviting style. We can’t wait to see what you guys think!
Update: We sadly can no longer find the time to take on client commissioned mood boards (and just whip up general inspiration boards instead) but if we ever reinstate them we’ll make a big announcement on the blog!

I love blues in the bedroom!! I especially love those IKEA lamps!! I hope we get to see the finished product! Good luck, Corrie and Don.
Love it! And a ceiling fan to boot!
I adore the mirror and the glass lamps!!!
Walmart has a very similar mirror for $40.00!
Love it! i also wanted to put in a plug for another Target headboard that we have a love:

Really pretty wall color, and I love how you incorporated the dog hotel.

Just wanted to delurk and say that what I really like about your mood boards is how you stick to the client’s parameters — here it’s the bedding, crate and wanting a ceiling fan. You make it about design AND the client, as opposed to just pushing your opinions/style choices onto the client. Brava to you.
That said, I was intrigued b/c of your wall color choice with that bedding. I wouldn’t have thought to put green with it — and that’s where I run into trouble with my own color quandaries (and why you’re the one on the other side of this blog!).
How similar or different is the green to Behr’s 700E-3 Contemplation? Thanks to you (ahem, your blog) it’s a color I’m considering using (pre-YHL I would have looked at much darker colors). That said, I could really use a palette idea (or two!) from you. What other colors coordinate with a green like this when used in joined living and dining rooms — for the other connecting rooms on a main floor: ie, kitchen, front hall, powder room, and up the steps to the second floor. I’ve always tended to go tans and browns, but that doesn’t feel right with such a light green.
Can you suggest colors I might not even have thought to put on my radar (like with the bedding above) — maybe a coordinating cool gray you love that matches the green for the foyer and steps? But in the kitchen, there are warm (new) brown cabs and multi-color slate flooring so something else there.
Ah, color conundrums … you always get me down.
Anyway … looking forward to some finished pics — that means you Corrie and Don! ;)
Hey Rita,
Good question! We have no idea how similar that color is to Behr’s Contemplation (we can’t find that swatch in our most recent deck) but if you grab the paint chip that we recommended you should be able to compare them in your lighting situation and see what you think. And as for what other colors coordinate with a green like the one we chose for this board, we always love gray-blues (for a sea-glass-ish effect) as well as sandy tan tones, light creamy hues, soft platinum grays, and even warm amber or wheat colors. Just grab a whole ton of color swatches and hold them up to see which ones float your boat. And remember to check them out in your space since lighting really is everything. Here’s a post full of paint colors we already know and love, which can always get you started when it comes to taking home a whole bunch of potential paint chips to consider: http://www.younghouselove.com/2009/06/email-answer-picking-the-perfect-paint-color/

I really like that green wall color for a bedroom! So calm and serene. Especially pretty matched with the table lamp and round mirror (and the artichockes! :D )
This has to be my favorite mood board that yall have ever done!! Love it! I hope they send ‘after’ pics!
It looks like the bed isn’t going to go all the way to the wall against the windows/curtians. How do you suggest the DIY headboard look attached if they aren’t pushed together with a wall? I really hope that they send in “after” pictures so you can post the transformation!
Good question Bailey. You can definitely add 2x4s to the base of any DIYed headboard to screw or tie them into the back of the bed frame (many headboards are attached with bolts but we’ve even seen people use high strength velcro to attach the metal frame to those wooden 2x4s). Hope it helps!

Lovin’ that look!
Sherry,
Do you guys have any tips for making dog crates look a little less ugly? Other than buying an uber expensive decorative crate, of course. We keep our two doggies’ extra large traveling-style crates in the corner of our home office, and they’re such an eyesore. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Keep in mind, these crates are huge and can’t be hidden or anything like that.
Thanks!
Stacy
Hey Stacy,
We love the idea of creating an open front slipcover of sorts (as we mentioned in this post) and also whipped up this old post about disguising crates (check out the comments for more info): http://www.younghouselove.com/2008/09/crate-expectations/
Hope it helps!

I saw in their before pictures a tv. I read through but maybe I missed it – is the tv staying? If so, did you include where it is going to be placed? Just curious.
Hey Em,
Yup, the TV is actually leaving (Corrie and Don wanted the bedding and the dog crate to stay but everything else could go). Hope it helps!

I love a good “weenie” design. Thumbs up from another Dachshund lover. :)
Recently saw this post on ceiling fans that might interest Corrie and Don.

I like what you’ve done! And I really like that console table. Do you think it could maybe double as a desk? Or would it be too shallow to sit at comfortably?
Great question! The 15″ depth could be a bit shallow for certain people (for example, someone with a huge desktop monitor might feel a bit cramped) but we think it could totally work for many others- especially if you have a laptop and don’t plan to keep much on your desk. When in doubt you can always cut a piece of cardboard out in that basic shape and hold it up in front of you (or even tape off the floor) to see how it feels when it comes to the whole is-it-deep-enough thing. Sometimes seeing something that way can really put it into perspective. Hope it helps!

My favorite mood board yet! Guess who is painting their bedroom the same color!
Great design ideas. I’m really glad I read through this post because I’ve been wondering how to make our min. pins crate less obtrusive in our bedroom.
Truly gorg color palette…and I’m not officially obsessed with that mirror! It’s a must have!
I love the daushund prints! Please work on a english bulldog print next. The pug print could pass I guess, but deep down I’d know the truth lol :)
Hi guys! Just wanted to “FYI” you all that TJ Maxx has mirrors that are really similar to the one on your mood board for $59.99! I just bought one!!
Thanks so much for the tip Debbie!

Great mood board, as always!
I was thinking if you could print one of their dachshund prints in reverse (not knowing your options with your printer) the two would make a very cute mirror image. Also have thought that you guys could offer a kick-back or discount to your design clients when they send in their after pics (just cause the rest of us love to see them!).
Hey HJC,
All of our shop images are actually stored at the local print shop (where they run them off for us based on demand) so sadly we can’t alter them. We did consider that mirror-image dachshund prints would be cute, but we also like the modern quirkiness of repeating the exact same image twice. We can’t wait to see how it turns out!
And as for offering a kickback to those who submit finished room photos, it’s a great idea and one that we’ve actually considered more than once! The thing is that we know firsthand that room makeovers can take time, especially when people are putting rooms together with the intention of submitting after pics to our site (where they hope to receive rave reviews from our readers and want everything to be perfectly in place when they send them our way). So we hate to pressure anyone or bribe them to send over pics of their room if it isn’t all the way there yet (some people might jump the gun and we’d rather that they wait until the entire room is polished and pulled together before sending after photos). When that occurs and the room finally feels “done” to them, we notice that people are full of pride for their space and can’t wait to share it.
So it might take a while, but we end up with finished photos from clients who love their new rooms and are happy to send us lots of different angles and delicious detail shots (instead of avoiding unfinished corners or making disclaimers like “I still need to accessorize those bookcases”). Does that make sense? We promise that we hate waiting just as much as you do (every time we send off a mood board we’re on the edge of our seat to see how things turn out) but we do our best to be patient and encourage as many follow-up photos as people can manage without putting on the pressure. Hope it helps!

Great mood board. I’ve been stalking a couple of these items..like those artichokes and that insanely cute mirror for a little while now…maybe it’s a sign for me to buy’em already!! =) Thanks for more inspiration as always!
one more thing…if they would have had dressers in this case what color would you have gone with? Would you have matched the color to the nightstands or gone light?
Hey Stacy,
Either would work, so you could go with rich wood tones to match the items we selected or even white or cream painted dressers. Heck, mirrored ones would be cool too. It’s really all about what floats your boat. Hope it helps!

The lack of a bedskirt was the first thing I noticed! Just that one detail alone will make a huge difference in how the room looks/feels.
Hello,
I have VERY similar bedding, except mine is a darker blue and actually is more of the shiny look…I like it that way. Would you go for more of a blue-gray for the walls in that case, or what would you suggest? Thanks- Lauren
You could definitely go for a platinum gray color (like Benjamin Moore’s Light Pewter) or a blue-gray color (like Benjamin Moore’s Quiet Moments) but the soft green color we suggested would probably still work, so it’s worth bringing home a bunch of swatches and holding them up to the bedding and the walls to see what you like best. Color is a super subjective thing!

can someone send me the link to the similar mirror that is at walmart??
Love the mirror, will watch for a possible sale as it would fit so well in our guest bedroom. And will check out Walmart, Crystal. Thanks!
I love this mood board! And I totally have a craving for some artichokes now!
Sherry, I would love your honest opinion on something…do you think this bedroom (or one very similar) would look good with a chocolate brown accent wall where the bed is?
Thanks :)
Sure! That would totally work. Accent walls aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but if you love them go for it! Wall color in general is extremely subjective, but chocolate paint can definitely be worked into this scheme so if it floats your boat we say do it!

Hi Guys! I have been searching the internet for how to hide the dog crate ideas too, as we are considering getting a Husky from the shelter. Here is a wonderful site I ran across and if you can sew (or know someone that does) this would be a good place to get some ideas:

They are heart stopping expensive, but v. nice!
Thanks so much for sharing the link Betty!

Someone above asked if the TV stayed or not – and you mentioned it did not stay. We had a bedroom with a TV and then moved to our current apt we do not have the TV (or phone or laptops) in the bedroom and what a big difference it made to our sleep! We sleep so much better and the bedroom just feels so much more peaceful and calm. Some say that all that electro-magnetic stuff from TV, cable, DVD player, wireless phones, computers etc. disturbs sleep. Well I don’t know if it was that – but I can only attest that removing the TV improved our sleep and one must say it our romantic life too! This room will be dreamy afterwards!
I love this and I of course love the dachshund prints since we have our own little weenie lovebug!!!
Again another great look. But, I have a question about the height of the nightstand, is it really only 18″ H. I was looking at the Manhattan nightstand and it is 24″ H so the other one seems really short. Do you know anything about the Manhattan nightstand.
Yup, it’s another great option. We’ve seen it in person and it’s classic and solid looking. Go for it!

While we are on the topic of the Target manhattan collection….does anyone know if the hardware on the side tables, console, etc are brushed or shiny finish?
Thank you!
Good question. Anyone know?

Hey Sherry -
Thanks for your sweet reply to my post. I totally understand your desire not to pressure your clients into revealing before they’re ready. Believe me, if someone had to wait until I finished my projects…well, let’s just say you wouldn’t have much to blog about.
Your response is the reflection of your always gracious attitude!
Happy Thursday – one day closer to B-day (Baby- or Beanette-day)!
Love the ceiling fan! I think it would perfect for my bedroom. Do you think it would be too big for a room 10×13? If so, what size fan would you recommend?
Nope, it would probably just fine for a room that size. Hope it helps!
xo,
s
I have that EXACT ceiling fan in my new bedroom, and let me tell you, it’s the most AMAZING ceiling fan ever. I was so suprised at how quiet it is, and how cool it keeps the room (without an air conditioner might i add). My bedroom is about 10×13 and it fits perfectly without looking too big or too small. Excellent choice youngsters!
So good to hear! Thanks for the true-life review!

Thanks for the review. I am going to order online right now :)
I love this mood board, like usual! I especially love the colors! I have a similarly shaped room with the two windows on either side of the bed and have struggled with curtains – I want to hang them high and wide, but I find that there isn’t really room to hang them “wide” when the windows are so close to the wall, unless the curtains covered a large portion of the window. I really like the light coming into my room, so I have been hesitant to do that. Am I missing an obvious solution, or do you just assume they’ll cover some of the window?
Sadly in order to add height and softness to a window that doesn’t have a lot of wall space on either side, you have to cover a bit of the window. But many panels (like soft white Vivan ones from Ikea) can still feel breezy and light so the window doesn’t appear smaller at all, but taller and airier (plus semi-sheer curtains like those won’t block any actual light). Hope it helps!

I JUST BOUGHT THE EXACT BEDDING SET FROM TARGET, MINE HAS THE BEDSKIRT THOUGH. THAT WILL DRAMATICALLY INREASE THE EYE CANDY OF THE ROOM! I’M EXCITED B/C NOW I CAN PULL THESE COLORS AND IDEAS INTO MY OWN ROOM.THANKS.
So, I am a total dork and forgot to mention that while we have a bed skirt, we have not put it on yet. The puppy loves to run under the bed, and we found that the bed skirt gets in the way when we are trying to coax her out :) I promise that we will send pictures as soon as we are done!!!
Aw that’s cute. We can’t wait to see how it all turns out.

I have the very EXACT bedroom. I mean the SAME bedroom as floorplan, so we must have the same builder. While my bedding is a calmer West Elm white and cream, I used similar elements of this design for the rest of the room.
I know I am a little late to comment over here, but I LOVE this bedroom you whipped up!
I have a question….the lamp shades on those fabulous IKEA lamps are off white/cream colour. Do you think they would look okay in a room with the white IKEA Vivan curtains plus lots of other white?
The lamps can be bought wiithout the shades…should I do that & buy white shades instead?
I would LOVE your thoughts! I need a little guidance :)
Oh yeah, we’re big fans of layering ivory, cream and white for a soft and textural look. As long as there’s not a ton of one color (like white) and just one pop of another tone (like cream) it’ll look intentional and lovely. Hope it helps!

I just bought and replaced 3 ceiling fans with the one on this page. Thanks for putting it on here. It was just what I had been looking for.

Did Corrie and Don ever send you a follow up photo? We’ve got the same bedding and I’d like to see what they did as far as the paint color and headboard option. Headboard related question – if the headboard is attached to the wall, how do you keep the bed from sliding when you lean against it? I’m thinking I’ll be attaching ours to the frame (whenever I get around to doing it).
Most beds have wheel locks to keep them from shifting (especially if they put the carpet under the bed it should hold it in place pretty well). You can also attach a headboard to the bed with long screws if you prefer that configuration. As for follow up pics, we don’t have any from Corrie and Don yet, but we always share them if/when they come in!
